When you said "is this weird" it made me realize that you were asking whether or not the frame of understanding/reference was too far away. When the kneaded eraser gets dark and starts leaving stains on the paper you're supposed to throw it away according to both my art teachers. Just put that here👏

I just wipe mine down with a makeup remover wipe or baby wipe and paper towel it dry and it usually stops the transfer

Well, yeah. That graphite doesn't have anywhere else to go, except the eraser. At some point, the eraser gets saturated with it and it starts basically shedding it. There's no real fix but to throw it away.... Unless someone knows how to actually clean it. I've heard some people say that tearing your eraser up can help its longevity, though, but I don't have anything to back that up.
