I'm an atheist that lived in Texas, and at one point I visited Lakewood church. I was skeptical to say the least, but witnessing the joy that this man brought to his devout followers made me grow a great respect for Mr. Olsteen. He does have a mansion and he does drive a Ferrari, but keep in mind that he is a multi-time NYT best selling author in over 100 countries. That has got to account for a great deal of that fortune of his. Give the man a break, if he brings joy to millions, what bad does it bring to you?

Why the hate? Regardless of the background situation or the people sending him money, if youve ever listened to his speeches, he talks about love, hope, and just messages in life that you sometimes need to hear. Ive been watching for a few years, never sent him a dime except for buying the book hes shown here. He spreads positive messages. Thats all! You dont have to hate him for that, you dont have to pay him anything, its free to watch, and refreshing to hear.

There are quite a few preachers out there that take advantage of their congregation. See John Oliver's Televangelist episode. Joel Osteen also appears on tv and is rich, so some assume he's another guy like that. Truth is he made his money mostly through book sales and is quite upfront about which church donations go where. The vast majority of donations actually go to help the poor globally, including providing food, potable water, and medicine. Atheist or not, that sounds like a good thing.
@dangerouslytalented
@dangerouslytalented 8 жыл бұрын
+Julie Meibaum Because he is an insanely rich televangelist who flies around in private jets but says he does not take a salary... Frighteningly dishonest and smarmy with an incredibly opulent lifestyle, the kind of person Jesus threw out of the temple in that bible story.
@elchupacabra567
@elchupacabra567 8 жыл бұрын
+dangerouslytalented Nope. Doesn't have a private jet. Even if he did, he's rich because he's a best-selling author not because of money from donations. Those go to his church, which uses it to provide food, potable water, and medicine to poor people around the world. Typical televanglist: "send me money and magic will make you rich", keeps the money. Joel Osteen doesn't ask for money, donates millions of his own, and doesn't get paid from his church or appearances.
@TheHigherVoltage
@TheHigherVoltage 8 жыл бұрын
+El Chupacabra He was making $200,000/year + expenses from his church for years before he decided he had enough money. He's just a snake oil salesmen that uses religion to sell his crap.
@elchupacabra567
@elchupacabra567 8 жыл бұрын
+TheHigherVoltage For running an organization that brings in over $43M annually and provides aid in over a dozen countries? A bit underpaid actually. Yes, $200k + expenses is a lot of money, but far less competent people earn far more than that running similar organizations. He stopped because he got lucrative book deals, and now he donates way more than what he took out. Not to mention he still helps millions of people worldwide. Religious or not, providing millions of dollars in food, water, and medicine to the poor every year seems like a good thing to me. Not a snake oil salesman.

I am really surprised at the level of animosity pointed at Mr Osteen by those who actually have no idea what he does and how he does it. First of all he does not state he is a minister, he didn't complete his divinity degree, but his is a motivator. Second, most of his money comes from the sale of his books which most would describe as "self-help". Although not a follower myself I can understand that there are many folks out there who take great comfort from his ideas and concepts about living a more productive, happy life. Why is it that we see no problem in an entertainer making millions of dollars a year for singing songs, but are irate that a man who provides his followers a degree of comfort from his teachings?

+Ryan Smith Eh, that's a matter of biblical interpretation. Some Christians honestly believe poverty is required. Others say simply not being wealthy. Some say wealth is fine as long as you don't love money but God. I've seen people support each position with biblical passages. Joel is in that 3rd camp I believe. Personally, I prefer to look at what fruits a person has produced. Most tv pastors only help themselves. Joel's helped millions. To me, that makes him atypical.

+Michael Avila So they don't screen for breast cancer at all? They have physicians that check for abnormalities and if they find any they refer a woman to an affordable/flexible mammogram site. I don't see what the hell you're talking about. I'm not going to waste my time on defending Planned Parenthood, the debate is over. They benefit women all over this country and to say otherwise is to blindly follow a bronze-aged ideology.

I'm a devout atheist, but this guy isn't quite as bad as many think. He's filthy rich and he uses his tax-exempt mega church to promote his books, but at least he doesn't spew hate and intolerance. He's basically just a tolerant, capitalist pope, and that's pretty damn refreshing compared to other televangelists.

Because a self-serving shyster wouldn't give away all of the donations he receives. He makes millions from his books, but his church makes way more and he doesn't take any of that. Instead, he donates millions to the church. And the church helps people overcome drug addiction, maintains hospitals in Africa, continues to provide aid in Haiti since the earthquake, sends aid to Belize, Kenya, etc. At least, not my definition of a self-serving shyster.

Jesus got a special message for true Muslims and He Himself appears to them lately to tell that. Yeshua said "“I AM THE LIVING GOD" in one chapter FIVE times. "“I AM THE LIVING GOD, The Bread, which has descended from Heaven.” John 6 (Aramaic translation)

No one is good to go to Heaven on their own. Good works don’t save a person from Hell. It’s God’s Grace and Mercy that saves a person from hell. Being saved by God’s Grace and Mercy, good works comes out of it as a result. Read Ephesians 2:8-10, John 3:16-18 and Romans 3:23.

Isn't Joel Osteen one of those "God will make you rich and make me rich in conjunction" Evangelical pastors who is notorious among even religious peoples for being a massive scam artist?
@elchupacabra567
@elchupacabra567 8 жыл бұрын
No, but I can see why you'd think that. He doesn't get any money from his church or donations. Most donations actually go to help people. But he is rich, a preacher, and on tv. To some, that's enough to lump him in with the ones that are scam artists.
@keimahane

Stephen's question, "Do you need to believe in Jesus to read this book?" hit the nail on the head. Osteen is a false christian teacher, only using the "church" as his platform. Great interview Mr. Colbert.
