@@hcope28 That's not really what happened. There was an activist group-owned house across the way from Phelps' residence where his church and other family members reside on the block (they neighbor each other and combine their backyards as one without fences), the group painted it with pride colors and advocate for LGBTQ youth and suicide prevention, and apparently per witnesses, Phelps stood in his doorway and remarked how the people over there are doing a good thing. Some of the more controlling family members like his daughters used this to claim their father/leader was going senile, accepted hell, and was thus excommunicated from his family and church that he spawned in the first place. The whole thing is quite bizarre but true. It's still a reach to say Phelps became actually embracing and accepting of LGBTQ people toward the end but we can reasonably read into the idea that he wanted to embrace some sense of positivity before his demise.

This is what happens when a man fails to resist the forces that can turn us all into domineering tyrants. The calm hatred in his eyes, the wrinkled scorn, the gourd of gnarled resentment - this is what can happen if you take the path away from forgiveness, humility and compassion. The arrogance to say you know already what a person is like without taking time to get to know them - this, right here is a cowardly failure, retreating into the easy answers of bitterness, tyranny and conceit. Pray for him, and everyone he touches.

I really appreciate your comment, and agree with you entirely, up until (but excluding) your final sentence. Your observations demonstrate great insight and understanding of some of the worst aspects of human relationships... especially the wanton exercise of power and control by one individual over another. The pastor's refusal to engage in an honest, respectful dialog with someone who is not already under his control is a hostile, tyrannical act, just as you have observed. It is certainly arrogant, and better understood as an expression hubris than self-confidence. I would differ perhaps in one respect, that I'm not sure it's actually "cowardly" (although it might be), as another possible explanation is that it's purely a pragmatic, tactical, and cynical choice on his part. I did not detect any "fear" in Pastor Fred Phelps' eyes, or in his voice.... only contempt and disgust. In this regard, I doubt the pastor could see any benefit to spending time elaborating or explaining his point of view to someone who was not already persuaded by his arguments. This is most likely based on years of previous experience. His business entails controlling the beliefs and actions of other people, and any successful businessman has to recognize the limits of their influence, and where their business model is most likely to yield rewards. But returning to your final sentence: What is the basis for your (inferred) belief that prayer would have any beneficial effect? With regard to the pastor himself, it's a moot question, as it's my understanding he's already dead, and therefore permanently beyond persuasion. It is on behalf of other people who have been influenced by his poisonous hatred that I inquire. I am more inclined to think that engaging any such people in a kind, courteous, and patient manner could eventually lead them to see the world in a different way. But is there any reason to think that prayer would have the same beneficial effect? I don't understand how that would work. My views in this regard are based partially on the "testimony" provided by Megan Phelps-Roper, who was able to escape the direct control of the community of the Westboro Baptist Church. In her entire Ted Talk about how this happened (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIe5Y42hbZ2Vm7s ), she said a lot of things about the engagement she had had from other individuals, but said nothing about God having intervened. I actually don't know what her beliefs are in this regard... but I ask, nevertheless,... If compassionate human interactions are an essential component of such a transformation, does prayer actually do any good? Please understand that my intent is not to disabuse you of your belief in God or intercessory prayer, but only to make the point that prayer by itself is at minimum insufficient, if not wholly unnecessary. There is a direct role for us ordinary humans to play, and in my view, we must all fulfill that obligation to the best of our ability, not merely by "thoughts and prayers", but through actual civic and civil engagement.

Interesting fact about Fred Phelps. Apparently he was excommunicated from Westboro near the end of his life. He was apparently suffering from dementia and called out to some activists who bought a house across the street from the church (and who had a gay pride flag flying outside) and told them they were “good people.” The church considered this blasphemy and excommunicated him. There’s something in the thought that, despite how thoroughly evil this man was, he somehow discovered compassion towards the end of his life. He didn’t deserve redemption and he gets 0 sympathy from me for all the horrendous things he did and the hatred he spread, but somehow maybe he discovered just a crumb of goodness on that black old heart towards his end.

Or he just got confused and thought all protesters were by default Westboro Church protesters. His church uses rainbow background on a bunch of their placards... but it could be simpler than that. He could have been at a point where he could recognise what a protest was, but not comprehend that there could be any kind of protest expect his church protesting funerals etc. They were good people for protesting, in his mind. Maybe.

Most cults aren't comprised entirely of attention whores who need acknowledgement and recognition the way most people need food and sleep. That, and they all seem to share some sort of martyr complex in which the seek validation in being loathed and despised. What I've gathered over the years, by constantly setting themselves up to be scorned, ridiculed, or worse, they get to tell themselves that they're nobly suffering the proverbial slings and arrows, enduring that massive burden in His holy name, earning their way into Heaven.

A lot of them (especially Fred and Shirley) have narcissistic personality disorder to quite the extreme… This causes a DEEP non self aware sense of NEEDING attention and praise. Research NPD and you’ll see what these kind of people are all about. Psychopaths and Narcissists are over represented in religious/cult communities.
