We are horrible at explaining our beliefs and onlookers get confused. I agree we need to do better at explaining that 1) We lived in Heaven before we were born 2) Christ loves all his people but doesn't want to force them to follow him otherwise they wouldn't be strong joint-heirs (that last word is used in the new testament) 3) Christ is preparing the world for the second coming in a way that is sustainable spiritually by bringing back the original church he established while on the earth with all the powers it will need to gather Israel 4) Christ in his great mercy, saves all in the end except those who are determined to not follow him after being sealed/election made sure/in his presence/truly born again by fire (that's how we determine someone is denying the Holy Spirit, the unpardonable sin in the Bible). However some people go through needless suffering of their own choosing or not (truth is withheld from them), do not get baptised in life which holds back progression after they die until someone gets baptised on their behalf (we believe in baptism on behalf of the dead), and it's just not right to hold back all the knowledge and blessings and advantages like ministering of angels they could have in this life and progression that could bring them back into God's presence. 5) Joseph Smith is spoken of a lot because he is relatable (looking for truth), helps establish why we have the authority to do any of this (given to him by the original apostles), and because he represents the blessings of the original Joseph of Egypt being realized and spread to the world. But even he said that the church is about Christ his death his resurrection, and what it means for us--anything else is just an attachment 6) Latter-day saints strive for exaltation, not just salvation, and sometimes that gets confusing. It means being joint-heirs, and all of our wrongs being made up, not just going to heaven. Hope that makes sense. @@Sheila-u4t

Great tour. Keep in mind regarding BYU, that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has always advocated higher education for everyone, men and women. There are BYU campuses in Idaho and Hawaii, Church Colleges in New Zealand and other Pacific Islands. Not to mention BYU Pathways, an accredited church subsidized higher education, mostly online program where a Bachelors degree can be achieved in 3 years for under $10 K. It's available to saints and non-saints alike, all over the world. I can't even guess how many students are currently enrolled because it has grown so much over the last several years. As with ALL BYU campus education, a religion class is a required part of the curriculum. Education promotes wisdom and helps us be better sons and daughters of God. And be sure and learn about the church sponsored Perpetual Education Fund. It's an incredible and inspired program to help educate and lift people out of the cycle of poverty that exists around the world. I could go on.... but the bottom line is that God wants us to continue in learning our whole life, especially learning about Him. BTW, great video. Love meeting your bride!

My husband’s great uncle was the LDS church architect for the Provo temple (and many others). Diversity at BYU can be a tricky subject navigate, but I have always felt that the student body has high exposure to diverse peoples and cultures… as 65% of the students speak a second language fluently, 50% have lived outside the United States for a year or more, and BYU has the highest number of Polynesian students on the mainland. We both were born in Utah, but lived 10 years in Michigan (did graduate work at the University of Michigan) and worked there, then moved "back west" to Cheyenne Wyoming and lived there almost 20 years, and then moved back to Utah and have been in Utah 20 years.

It’s nice to see a fellow Ute in the comments! I thought Joy’s comment about no coffee shops on campus was funny. At the U, there are multiple, including a Starbucks in the Campus Store. I graduated from the U in 2021, and although it was originally my dream to go to BYU, I didn’t get in (even if you have good grades, it’s hard to get into that school if you are from Utah, they really prioritize the students who didn’t grow up in the “Utah bubble”). However, the Lord placed me where I needed to be, even though I didn’t see it at the time. Going to the U really strengthened my faith-it was the first time in my life I was in a predominantly non-LDS environment, and also the first time I encountered antis face to face (there are A LOT of antis at the U these days). It was definitely interesting, intense, and faith-building. And even though I’d never go back and would much rather get a graduate degree from a faith-based university like the Y or Liberty, I can’t deny that going to the U really helped shape me into who the Lord wants me to be. Anyway, hope you don’t mind my ranting reply, lol.

Hey Pastor Jeff! If you want to explore another fascinating layer of LDS culture, make your way up to Logan and visit Utah State University. You can experience a state run school that is still majority LDS, but not run by the church. There are a lot of similarities to BYU because of how many students are LDS but there is a different culture since there isn't a fusion of the church and the school like at BYU. It is kind of hard to explain, so you should check it out. Cache Valley is a gem, also.

I’m an LDS convert of 41 years. Contemplating leaving the Church, due to my study of Church history and doctrine. This Chanel is part of my ongoing research. Thank you Pastor Jeff.

Another great video to add to your postings. It was also nice to meet your wife. I have enjoyed watching this journey you are on. BYU is a great university, I got my undergrad from there and met my wife there. The "Y" actually comes from when the student body first went to paint the Mountain with BYU. They started with the Y and it took so much time, paint and effort that by the end of the day all they had done was the Y, so they left it. After that the school went by the abbreviated Y for their logo and how people refer to it. At least that is the story I heard on a tour.

Glad that you toured BYU! I was married while there. I believe things happen at the BYU schools (and other church schools) that do not happen anywhere else. I wish you could have attended a weekly devotional! The school gets a lot of flack for it's dress/behavior standards (it's called the Honor Code). But they are very upfront about it. It shouldn't surprise anyone.

First, loved that your wife was part of this. Second, we need more joy and the name is available so grab it and Joy can have her own channel which brings me to the third part, I would be very interested in knowing about her journey here in Utah as a non-Latter-day Saint and her perspectives. I hope you and your family have felt welcome and needed.

Jeff, this was great. I loved the comments about the culture of Latter-day Saints. I would love to see your reaction to watching a movie, with some of your Latter Day Saint friends, that pokes fun at our culture. The RM, Mobsters and Mormons, And The Home Teachers are some of my favorites. It would be great to compare your reaction and how people outside of the LDS community see us and compare that to how we see ourselves. Could be fun.

Honestly, I'm curous what Pastor Jeff would think of the BYU Pathway program which is different than just starting straight into BYU. CES honor and dress codes are fairly easy to access online. That would explain what students agree to live by or wear during their enrollment at the Y.

Not sure if this is still going on, but one of my lasting memories of visiting the BYU campus, back in early 70s, was at 12 noon, they played the Star Spangled Banner over campus-wide speakers. And everyone stopped, stood at attention and placed their hand over their heart as the song played. That didn't happen at the college I was going to!
@ellenhigham3315 Жыл бұрын
When I was there in the late 80s/early 90s, the Star Spangled Banner was played at 8:00 am and 5:00 pm when the ROTC cadets raised and lowered the flag by the administration building.

I grew up and live in Canada so BYU hasn't really been a part of my LDS experience. I've seen it from a distance a couple of times on visits and when I was at the MTC, but that's it. Thanks for giving me a better look.

Alright, what's Joy's fascination of laundry! First, your undergrad school in Illinois sounds a lot like mine in NW Arkansas, also an Evangelical Christian college. Since when it comes to big college athletics, I'm a K-State fan, it'll be interesting to see the competition and rivalry now that BYU is in the Big XII, and soon Utah was well. And that's a very big campus, no doubt. 38,000 students is a lot, my undergrad days it was 850 (now more like 1,400). That's so different to be on such a big campus. It definitely looks very nice and very well maintained, which I can always respect and appreciate. And the Mountains are incredible. Definitely never had that view at my college or grad school. So it sounds like a really interesting tour. If I were in Provo, I would definitely enjoy seeing the school.

While it's true that BYU is part of the Mormon culture, that is only really the case in Utah. Most LDS live outside of the US and for them, BYU is something they have no connection with or reference to at all. Which brings me to a broader comment regarding the scope of Hello Saints. At some stage it may be worth considering visiting and interacting with Saints in other countries. For example, the longest continuous congregation of the LDS church is in Preston, England. British LDS are quite different in some respects to our American co-religionists, and our faith plays out differently in our more secular and multi-cultural societies. Just a thought.

Aw so wonderful to get to know your lovely wife a bit Pastor Jeff! I was a BYU-Provo student twice - there's such a feeling there! The first time I attended I was 17 (in 1970) - I fell in love about every 2nd week til I met a California boy.....then dated him for the next year until I left for the summer and -surprise! went home to Canada ,met a Canadian , stayed home and got married.... Took many more University courses along the way, including grad classes. Raised a big family, supported my husband in a stressful career. Then 40+ years later as a widow I returned to BYU-Provo for another 4 semesters. I was lonelier but more focused, haha, studied harder this time around. Developed a healthy fear of the "new" testing center! (You need to see the painting in there - I believe it's called "She shall find that which was lost". I thought that might be my mind, when I was trying to pass basic Stat's...LOL) I was the only great-grandma in every one of my classes in 2016/17! Gosh it was fun to see all those places again! I lived kind of "under the Y" second time around (in the "tree streets" ) & loved to hear that carillon every day -the bells - playing "Come Come Ye Saints" and other songs on occasion. Guess what? I came home again for the summer- this time to the house I'd inherited from my late in-laws - and met my late husband's childhood friend (a descendant of the real Brigham Young), who was also widowed. Stayed home and got married AGAIN!!! It's been great to find love again. Also great to see your BYU tour. I would go back in a second if I could (well, minus the U.S. election I got to be a part of in 2016 - now that was scary!) haha . OK enough reminiscing! WHAT YOU MISSED: The Creamery on 9th! best , award -winning chocolate milk in the country, and mint brownies. And ice cream for all the Friday night dating couples! You missed walking around the Provo temple grounds - this cold Canadian had never seen so many tulips as at the Provo temple in the spring! Loved it. And the WILK!!! The Wilkinson Center. It has a bowling alley, a hair studio, post office, a big gym for ballroom dance classes and banquets, fast food outlets, and so much more...And the "new" (to me - but now very seasoned) Marriott Center.... Yes the students are encouraged (not required) to go there for "Devotionals" on Tuesday mornings - but they're also broadcast to the main campus, making it easy to duck in between classes. And yes there's a dress code; very controversial at times. In my day, girls were just being allowed to wear pants on campus! Of course I found lots had changed between 1970 and 2016, my first and second BYU experiences (including literally some streets around camplus), but that special feeling lingered on.... I loved art shows at the MOA gallery & music concerts at the (now torn down) HFAC - Harris Fine Arts Center. First time around I saw mostly free student recitals, etc. Second time around, I paid good money for concerts I couldn't afford the first time (like the Kings Singers) and then left partway through to study! haha. Oh I forgot TUBA CHRISTMAS!!! You must see that! What a place. What an experience. Well worth every penny that I'm now not leaving to my kids ;-) Carry on brave pastor!

Hey Jeff, loved the video as a BYU alum! It’s not a complete BYU experience, unless you go to a sporting event, such as a BYU football game. Go this year to the BYU Cincinnati game at home the last Friday of September it will be a packed house and an experience youll never forget. You can’t leave unless you get a cougar tail. I would love to personally escort you through the game, just let me know!

I love BYU! My husband and I met while doing to school there. Met and married in 6 months so we are those people 😂 but we've been happily married for almost 16 years so we made the right call. I have been going to campus since I was 14 because once a year in August they have BYU Education Week. A week where the campus is filled with classes all day in religious and some secular subjects (marriage, finance, parenting, mental health, music, etc). There are multiple classes to choose from each hour and you can just go wherever you want to. They have youth classes as well and I have been going with my family for most of my life. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I learned more about the gospel and doctrine from education week than from 4 years of seminary. My favorite week of the year is sitting in religious classes all day 😂❤.

Hi J&J, thanks for the review, it was cute, glad you like the mountains and the laundrymat. One thing that would have been a good start would be to show the road entrance to BYU which sums things up pretty well: 'The World is our Campus' and 'Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve' God bless !
