I feel like what basically happened was that when the Friday night funkin community made the Sonic.exe mod, it made everyone remember the story existed, and then everyone was like “Wow, that story/game was shit, I could do way better. ….. You know what? I Will do way better.” And then Ta-Da! A whole new community was born!

It was more a community revival than anything, while there had been dedicated works in the past for this sort of thing, it always felt very self contained up until FNF blew it out of the water, with the largest community probably being the Nightmare series community before FNF helps the creepypasta take the spotlight. I remember back in 2018 just looking for new ExE related stuff to watch, and I’m insanely impressed with all of the new stuff as well, and I’m happy that it’s getting talked about a lot more now! This community was reborn by FNF, and while it’s bittersweet to see some of my favourites take a backseat to all of this, I’m incredibly happy to see the original story being taken into the proper care it really needed so that it could actually shine, there’s tons of other, older fangames out there and now that there’s a larger backing for this community, games old and new can really shine both in terms of quality and popularity, whereas before it was much harder to come across someone who had that same interest. Sorry I talk a lot but I kinda wanted to say something about the community before FNF propped it up onto its own two legs, and as a message to anyone who reads this and is interested, I hope you’d make the time to check out other games, even if just through KZbin videos like this, there’s a veritable treasure trove of stories and games out there.

No, Pastra. You weren't wrong. The OG story was dogshit. Overly ridiculous descriptions, written more as a blueprint for the inevitable fan game (seriously, the guy in the story STRAIGHT UP SAYS IT PLAYED THE KEFKA LAUGH AND USED THE MUSIC FROM OTHER GAMES), non-sensical story, tryhard, and the creator was an asshole even before the allegations. But Sonic fans are great at taking bad ideas and turning them into gold. Its so cool to see how many interperetations of one character there can be, and the fangames get pretty wild when they really commit to the fourth wall breaking horror.

As cliche as the original game was, there was two good things about it for sure: The fear of seeing a close friend and role model instead be a villain, and how instead of struggling to keep up with them, you struggle to run away from them now. Roles have flipped against you, with a inevitable creeping danger coming from the one you valued the most. And the confidence destruction of being unable to strike such a foe, despite holding the power in your two fists. I am so glad the character rights for X (Sonic.exe's name) were stripped from JCTheHyenASS and given to JoeDoughBoi and ASTRONOMICON. JoeDoughBoi's Sonic2011 (the current canon's replacement to the creepypasta) and SONIC PC PORT is genuinely such a fitting way to restart Sonic.exe as a whole. ESPECIALLY glad they got rid of THOSE parts of X (if you know you know) oh also lord x from sonic pc port is just straight up x (as seen in 2011) but in the future years and years later. OH ALSO: theres not continuity in ALL games, some stuff is simply seperate takes/characters. But yes, X is Lord X. There's continuity in the official shit, and the fanmade stuff is fanmade, whether or not it has its own seperate continuity.

To give a bit more context, the Sonic.exe from SONIC 2011 is called 2011x, or X for short. He WILL become Lord X in the future (the one from PC PORT). A lot of EXEs can be related in some ways, you should totally check more outside of the games. Like EXE/Faker, who is a entity created by X, but was banned by him, due to being "no fun". Or Lord Mortis, who is a alternate version of X, who got defeated by another upper being. Glad to see you're starting to love EXEs stuff :) I would highly suggest checking content related to Rewrite, he's one of the most creative and cool EXE out there.

The funniest thing is that Pastra barely even scratched the surface when it comes to Sonic.EXE. Y'all thought the Jeff the Killer OCs and re-imaginings were plentyful? Ooooooh boy, you guys aren't ready at alllllll. Even if the FNF mod is pretty infamous for jumping Sonic.EXE's popularity even higher than it ever was in the 2010s, it has so many different versions of the character and for a reason, and that's all without mentionning the many different horror Sonic related things that aren't connected to Sonic.EXE in any way whatsoever. Here are some of my recommendations for people interested in trying out any horror Sonic thing, .EXE thing or not. -Needlemouse, a KZbin analog horror series that re-interprets Sonic.EXE, making Sonic not a demon but the ghost of a murdered girl taking revenge on her murderers. It is complete but has been deleted, as the creator, ShutUpJojo, is remaking it in a far different way. Still, the old version has all been compilled in a video, so definitely look it up if you can, it's pretty great imo. -El Pendrive Azul. A spanish story that was created before Sonic.EXE was ever a thing. The original story is alright, but vibingleaf's fangame and subsequent video of it especially are a great remake of it that adds a twist that honestly keeps me up thinking of it sometimes. -Shin Sonic/The Sonic Tapes. While you probably saw the endless brainrot that resulted from it getting popular, it's still a pretty great webseries here on KZbin in it's own right. It's basically Sonic keeping his own abilities but slowly growing to become a Godzilla-level Kaiju threat.

I love sonic.exe games because they took the best part of 99% of creepypastas, the visuals, and ramped them up to the most insane level possible. They're like playable haunted houses, or playable slasher movies. Sure, they usually only have ok stories at best, and most of them are cleche as possible... I'd highly recommend watching a yt video called 'The misunderstood canon of sonic.exe'. It's an 1hr long video that explains all the mainline (ones that people are interested in) current canons of sonic.exe. It's very much a split timeline scenario, where one canon is a what if from the original and others are what if from other EXE's. One of my favourite exe's that's up and coming is lord morbius (or mobius?). It's essentially if another entity took over 2011X's game and inhabits eggman. This different entity steals all of 2011X's powers and humbles him, so much so that he's technically the goodish guy in this one, who helps the player try to escape from the new entity.

So basically, I believe there are three exes that split off from X(the first one). He can either become Lord X, who is wiser, more careful, and more honorable to a degree, or he can become Lord Mortis, who is X after getting soundly trounced by Bandado, who is an exe that takes the form of Eggman. Lord Mortis specifically is much more courteous and mature and is probably the only version of him you can call 'good' because he was so severely humbled. Lord X ends up creating EXE, who is another being entirely, and the seven Guardians, who watch his realm while he's playing his games. Those are the connections I think.

Sonic.exe is terrible at its core, but the potential to build upon it is amazing. The Sonic fanbase is so vast that there's definitely some talented content creators out there who can deliver the most interesting takes. The Horror Fandom intersects so nicely with Sonic, especially when it canonically has some weird and creepy monsters in the canon. Mephiles, Infinite, Time Eater, Dark Gaia, The End and even Black Doom are fantastic enemies that deal in some kind of manipulation, world warping, body horror, and reality distortion, meaning that the idea of an entity that can infect your game file isn't too far out of the realm of possibility.

What I think would be cool would be a fangame about shadows storyline and sonic.exe. It'd be interesting seeing a character as wholly malicious as Black Doom interact with Sonic.exe. I don't see him being scared like Robotnik, or even trying to stop X, but trying and fail to exploit him, either by turning him to black doom's cause or doing a mob boss thing where sonic.exe keeps his own slice of earth to play with his "toys" but BD gets the planet. There's a lot of fun stuff you could do there IMO Not to mention there's a lot of sore spots in Shadow's past X could hit to torment him.

To me, I think the VHS series "Needlemouse" did the original story justice. I don't want to spoil the VHS series for anyone, (since I want people to make their own judgment on it), but if anyone is asking, then yes, this series is better then the original story by a mile long. You can't find the original playlist for it anymore, because the original creator took it down. But if anyone wants to find a reuploaded playlist of Needlemouse with the full 13 eps in it, then the playlist made by "Fleetway: The Bringer of Chaos" should be your best bet. This series is sometimes overshowed by all of the other EXE's in this fandom. But I think it deserves a chance.

​@doginthedark I don't think they were- Needlemouse has an absolute truckload of writing problems, its execution horror wise is often so bad it's hysterical, and Episode 4 Season 1 is genuinely really really bad. And though I haven't seen their new EXE yet, I'm honestly excited to see what they do with better skills in horror, art, and writing. Because they've got strengths! Their artstyle is great, their dialogue is mostly good, the ideas are strong. The writing and execution in Needlemouse though... Left a lot to be desired. (Please please please don't take this as a personal attack- I just really feel like Needlemouse doesn't get criticized enough. Or ever. I don't think it's good at all, but if you like it, that's fine.)
