I am the great grand daughter of Carl Adamson and Amanda Clements Adamson. Carl died long before I was born and Amanda never would say who killed Pat. What she did say is that Brazel took the fall because he was single. I and many in the family accept the version (though it has been called far-fetched), that Killing Jim Miller (a cousin of Amanda) was the actual shooter. Money has been traced from Adamson to Miller in El Paso where a secret meeting took place. Miller was a gun for hire.

That is very damned interesting. You should pursue that with a professional historian and geneologist. Seriously, I know it's been four years since you posted this, but assuming you haven't learned anything yet to the contrary, you may have an important historical contribution to make here. There's a potential movie in Pat Garrett's life that's been far too long ignored, and your story could play a pivotal part in it
@olympiasbc

Interesting idea. It would be nice if the real history of Garrett and others were portrayed. Pat's death was only part of a bigger history of the region. Not sure who to talk, but thank you for your suggestion.

Have you been to the Tunstill kill site outside of Hondo? Theres a historic marker on the hiway but the kill site is about 12 miles down an old dirt road. Gotta have someone whos been there before show you where its at because its pretty hard to stumble upon but well wortth the journey to locate it. I know a guy in ruidoso who can show you if you want to put up a video of it.

I've been to this site several times. It is where my great grandfather died. Pat Garrett was my great grandfather and while some people say he was a coward because of speculation that he shot Billy in the back, you still have to consider some of the outlaws he was tasked with bringing to justice.

Damn it...I was all over New Mexico basically following the story of Billy The Kid and went everywhere..I desperately tried to find this spot but it eluded me!! I was walking in desert and in parking lots and everywhere in between....I was prob near here but just couldn't;t find it and wasn't willing to wander any farther on my own. Thanks for this though...next time I visit I can fulfil my Billy The Kid obsession. hehehe (I live in Hong Kong by the way so it was a really great adventure in a wonderful state!) I found the real Tunstall murder site though! What a hike through the bush!

How's about Oliver Lee. He tried his old standard shoot em first ask questions later on Lee and got his posse shot to pieces with one deputy getting his balls blown off. Oliver Lee was a Deputy U.S. Marshal and a prominent rancher who served in the New Mexico legislature and is considered to be the father of New Mexico's highway system. When Garrett made noises about reopening the Fountain case he got dead real quick!

For all the people that say that Pat was a coward for what he "supposedly" did to The Kid let me ask this. Pat was a coward for supposedly shooting The Kid in the back, so what does that make The Kid? He shot many, many more people than Pat ever did and quite a few of those people were innocent citizens, killed for their horses or money. And yes quite a few of them were shot in the back. Now go ponder that........

That is not true. Billy only actually killed 5 people, and most of those were in self defense. He was accused of killing a great many people, thst he had no involvement with, whatsoever. There are 100s of stories about the kid, but most b of them were pure bs. Also. He never shot ANYONE in the back. You should do a little better research.

Only a piece of concrete and stones as a marker for a great lawman! It's a shame! Maybe it's the price you must pay for all the killing you made back in 1880 and 1881 but we all know these were hard times and some men were only living by the gun... As Billy said "it was a game of two..." Anyway RIP sheriff Garrett and RIP Tom, Charly and Billy. Sooner or later we'll all ride the same trail...

Wayne brazel, was related to Mac brazel (decedent) who found the roswell ufo debris field in Lincoln county new Mexico just outside Chaves. You may ask odd history relation but truth. Back then the brazen family like most wealth Anglo families were who owned ranches owned A LOT OF land thus why places in southern NM have places named after the original land owners. The brazel family use to own land from Chaves into Lincoln County and it was pretty big.

Pat Garrett killed a fellow buffalo hunter named Joe Briscoe long before he was a law man. He was no better than any of the other frontier men of the day. Most of the elected sheriffs had blood on their hands before taking office...didn't mean they weren't criminals in their own right.

I guess Garrett was fed up with the Kid and was under pressure to eliminate him so did what he did in the way that he did, no chances taken to achieve end result. he didn`t want to give the Kid any chance to kill him either. So many Old West gunmen/Lawmen died in the same manner that they became famed names for, not in the way Hollywood puts it over either,
