In this extended interview in my series with experts in the science of breathwork, Drs Patricia Gerbarg & Richard Brown discuss the benefits of breathing techniques on the body and mind... in particular their speciality area - "coherent breathing", sometimes called "resonant breathing".
Their incredible book "The Healing Power of the Breath" is available on Amazon now. Click this link to get your copy!

The chime track used in this video is called '2 Bells' it was written and created by visionary biofeedback researcher Stephen Elliott who also coined the term 'Coherent Breathing' and developed the modern method. Check out his website coherentbreathing.com

BTW, the breath/energy movement they got into is like the Chinese microcosmic orbit. According to them we have a main loop the energy moves in - down the front of the torso, across the perineum and up the spine, around the top of the head and the upward channel ends at the roof of the mouth. Keep your tongue tip to the roof, as it is the beginning of the downward channel and touching it completes the loop. Around and around.

Thanks Brian! Many of the visualisations and body movements in their BBM protocol are taken from qigong. Specifically the style taught by Master Robert Peng.

Dear Tom! Hi! Thank you very much for the interview!!! Please advise can the aftereffect of the practice might be a feeling of the previously unfelt Trapecius muscles. What are actually the positive side effects of breathing on the body. I am totally new to this. The point is that my feeling of the body is very weak due to enormous series of the events. Your reply would be highly appreciated.

Another great interview on coherent breathing! Thank you for this. As far as breathing rates and height of people, 5 breathes per minute work for most people of average height. What do they consider average height? Thank you!

Can the coherent breathing 'work' with longer periods? For example: Inhaling for 10 seconds and exhaling for 10 seconds and even longer periods of time?
@AriaBreath
@AriaBreath 2 жыл бұрын
Breathing that slowly will be beneficial and relaxing but you won’t be at the “resonant frequency” which is what seems to improve the nervous system. I’ll be doing an online course about it soon if you’d like to submit your email at BreatheWithTom.com :)

Are we ideally supposed to breath like this all the time until it becomes natural and effortless, or do we just do it as a breathing exercise 20 or 30 minutes a day? Also, if we are doing coherent breathing all the time, should there be any pause after the exhale breath? Thank you.

Hi Frank, thanks for checking out the channel! The recommended period is at least 15 - 20 minutes. I practice for 25 usually. Once you have done this everyday for a few months, then you can try practising with the chimes while you are going about your daily activities. I recommend checking out my video with Stephen Elliott who created the original technique. He goes into more detail about the specifics.

How can this breathing technique increase the oxygenation of the blood, if you're not using 100% of your lung capacity
@AriaBreath
@AriaBreath 9 ай бұрын
Good question Jako, it's counter-intuitive but makes a lot of sense once the science is explained. Please check out the "benefits" page on my website AriaBreath.com where I explain a lot of this. There is also a free PDF I have written that explains the basics.

@@AriaBreath How does your technique compare to the one used by Wim Hof?
@AriaBreath
@AriaBreath 9 ай бұрын
Both are good. But this technique is specifically about increasing the health of the nervous system which in turn reduces overall stress along with a host of other benefits. The free eBook on my website goes into some detail.@@jakobw135

Great interview and wonderful information but Richard Brown constantly breathing in through his mouth after every sentence is, to put it bluntly, not good breathing unless he has a medical condition to stop nasal breathing. You can hear how he runs out of breath a few times. He should have a session with Partick McKweon
@AriaBreath
@AriaBreath 3 жыл бұрын
Zen Robot Ninja hi, thanks for your honest feedback, very observant! Feel free to check out my interview with Patrick while you’re here if you’re interested in nasal breathing! In Richard’s defence, he’s an expert in the physiology of HRV and as a medical psychiatrist has a particular focus on researching and healing the nervous system of severe PTSD patients through breathing techniques, as opposed to unconsciously trained nasal breathing for stamina which, as you rightly say, is Patrick’s specific remit. I cheekily sprung this interview on them at the end of a intensive training event in the UK. I can assure you the stamina of this guy is really quite something to behold in real life considering he’s almost 70 and with jet lag - I highly recommend going to an event with them if you get the chance, he moves like a guy in his 20s and is living proof that coherence works for longevity!
