This is a great way to learn chords, especially for jazz. Once you learn these, try moving whatever note you play on the high E string to the low E string.

This is also explained in Barry Harris' creation theory. It's a really beautiful way of looking at things and makes complete sense. I think Barry gets into more depth on why it's important and how to practically use the information, but I havent seen the rest of this lesson.

Somebody asks how to apply it...when you have this concept you don't have to memorize any dom7, maj7, min7 INVERSION, because they come directy from the dim7 shape...that's the power! Lowering each tone a half step from a dim7 you get (as explained) the root of dom7 chord but if you raise each tone a half step you get the min7b5 chord... wow!!!

@@steinberger95 not sure if this is what you mean, but for example Dmin7 to G7 - here you can move from b half dim (off 3rd of G7) to Bdim, (A to Ab, a rootless G7b9) to Bb7 (Root lower B to Bb) which is back door Dom to C major. If you stay on one string set, you can keep almost all the same fingerings and descend by minor 3rds, following the same pattern, corresponding to different inversions of ii and the I. You will get the four dominant/diminished sets as in a diminished scale, or family of dominants. I barely scratch the surface of this stuff, but find so much to explore.

as he touched on the flattnin of the 3 augmented notes but he did not touch the sharpnin of these which net some 4 minor 6th chords..depending on the root they could be 9th, min7b5 or minor6 chords!
