RIP Charlie Haden! I know nothing about jazz. But I lived in Montreal and always attended the Jazz Fest. Found my way to these two and fell in love with this album. In my list of great albums, which are littered with Rock and alt-Rock, this one stands out as my anomoly and helps me through the dark days. Thank God! and Thank You Charlie!

Beyond The Missouri Sky is one of the all time classic (and really "timeless") jazz collections in contemporary music. If I had only five I could choose from on the proverbial desert island, this would be in there solid. Thas' right!

This is definitely one of the best duos ever. The connection between Pat and Charlie is symbiotic, and both manage to keep a great sobriety that makes all the genius and serenity of what is being played. Brilliant.

There is no better music for me in the World than Beyond the Missouri Sky. It has given me so much happiness. I missed the concert in Sardinia by 2 daays and I will never recover from it. Unless Pat and Charlie decide that they would like to come to Wales and play in the land of song.

For those who want the lyrics' s Henry Mancini, even if this marvelous interpretation of Pat Metheny & Charlie Haden, alone, does not require it indeed. Personal love dedication for Lucian: "If you're feeling fancy free Come wander through the world with me And any place we chance to be Will be a rendezvous Two for the road We'll travel through the years Collecting precious memories Selecting souvenirs And living life the way we please In the summertime the sun will shine In winter we will drink summer wine And any day that you are mine Will be a lovely day As long as love still wears a smile I know that we'll be two for the road And that's a long long while"

At first, I was like, 'whoa! Pat, you're rushing the tempo of this beautiful Henry Mancini classic'. But as I allowed myself to settle down, only then did I realize if there's anyone that can rush the tempo and still maintain the originality & melody in a tune, it has to be Pat. 3-Cheers :) Thanks for this great upload. Actually I've been using the pick the very same way, ever since I started learning jazz guitar in Rome (Italy) back in 1985. I've been playing anything from fusion, metal, progressive rock, classic rock, to samba, classic, new age, and I still love how much rounder the sound of the strings is, when you position the pick the Metheny way. On top of composing beautiful, amazing music, the man will get credit for his guitar pick position! :-)

Metheny makes it sound great. He gets a clear, warm sound that is perfect the music he's playing. It just has a slightly more noticeable attack than a nylon string without a pick would have.

the thing about Haden that makes him more than you want to hear him as is his choice of notes! while it might seem like he pedals a note for too long or does these simplistic chromatic passages that just go boomp boomp boomp boomp, the harmonic scenarios that he is creating while doing so are staggeringly brilliant. Like hi studied Richard Wagner more than Ray Brown or Milt Hinton.
@robertgilbert568619 күн бұрын
This is a beautiful song -- Composed by Henry Mancini, with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. This was Mancini's second attempt to write the film's theme song. The first attempt was rejected by the film's director (Wow! A Mancini composition being rejected!). Regrettably, I don't care at all for Metheny's rendition. It suffers from what I hear far too often from musicians -- a pathetic attempt to show off, and make themselves more important than the music. In the jazz world I characterize this as a contest to see who can play the most notes in the shortest period of time. Here's an excellent description of the film and music: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_for_the_Road_(film)
@FrancescoGuardi15 жыл бұрын
Are we talking about the same clip? The harmonic scenario is created exclusivly by Metheney, Haden only makes his straight duty. And, chromatic passages - where ? It's all straight harmonical function.
@FrancescoGuardi15 жыл бұрын
Ah,I understand. I don't know so many recordings from C.H. For this clip I imagine how it would be with Gary Peacock or Orsted Pedersen or so...

I guess you've got your reasons for it, but I feel that a pick can sound quite nice on a nylon string guitar. this performance not being an exception. It's funny how different tastes can be. I think Metheny's tone is one of my favourite tones ever!
@vwbug197110 жыл бұрын
I'd like to see the charts Charlie is playing from. Notes or chords? Or just I, IV, V, etc. Did they rehearse for this, I wonder? Charlie was able to make some of the most marvelous sounds from wood and strings. I wonder how many basses he owned. He liked to mike his bass rather than use a pickup which I used to do years ago using a Barcus Berry that sounded alright for what I was doing, playing dinner music. You're playing to the angels now, buddy. What a hell of a show that must be.
@RudeBoy-hx1fn10 жыл бұрын
I doubt they rehearsed this -- at these guys' level, sightreading charts and having it come out perfectly the first time is pretty much par for the course. Fun fact: Jaco sightread "Birdland", pinch harmonics and all.
@mohitoness9 жыл бұрын
+vwbug1971 they've played this song in studio before... it's in their album beyond the missouri sky. You don't have to look at the changes to hear them, this song is very melodic.. but I bet he could write them down even though he never read them off paper to begin with. that's jazz

yeah i suppose in this clip he is doing a little bit of a pedantic job, I wrote my response before listening based on the dozens of C. Haden albums I have listened to over the years. I am surprised that in this setting he is using a chart for one of Mancini's more well known tunes! he is a little more form over style but in general Haden's things is that chromatic pedal/walk.
