I first heard this song in Chicago as a maybe 12 or 13 year old kid. Being black and from the Hood, I'd never been introduced to anything remotely close to this. This truly blew me away as a kid. But I had an am/fm portable Tape recorder and man I seem to could never catch it from the very beginning to record it. So I had it recorded maybe 5 or 6 times right behind each other, and man it was like having an extended remix version. I'd lay in bed and listen to this and travel places in my mind that were warm, beautiful, and tranquil. Still at 54, one of Pat's die hard fans.

In 1989 I was in the army and away from home, after working I used to listen to music on a portable tape deck, tired and lying on the bed, but they were always the same tapes every day, the same music and it had bored me, so I asked if someone had something new to play me, a Bro told me "listen to this and imagine being a flying eagle", I put my headphones on and followed the advice, the song was "are you going .." from "Offramp" ... from that day i didn't stop flying every time i listen to pat metheny ... thank you bro, wherever you are

I'm not sure why I'm writing this as to how this will make mine, or your lives different, but isn't it "funny" how there may be one or two songs you've EVER heard in your entire life that either makes you cry and/or stand back in TOTAL amazement of the perfection OF that song. Well, "Are You Going With Me" is one of two, the other is "Stairway" by LedZep. Something in my soul of soul's dictates that there will never be anything to compare to what I've heard in my 65 years on this planet with regards to the above. Both are night and day to each other, yet are so fu****g correct on their own! God bless America and Pat Metheny.

Could someone post details of this album for me? I was given a cassette of this and other tracks from the same album, and fell in love with it, but this was when I was at Uni in the 1980s. I lost the cassette in one of our many moves, and was really sad about it. Then I tried to find the music online, but this track was not on anything I have found so far - this is the first time I've found it - and now I can't work out how to download it either. As I remember all the tracks on that album were of this calibre and had a similar mood to them. I wish I knew the details so I could buy it from a vintage LP store or something. I do hope someone will respond. Thanks in advance. Ingrid PS and if you know how to download things from youtube that would be wonderful or is that illegal?

I am so sorry for your loss but he is with you for sure when you listen to this as music connects through the emotions and when there is a piece of music that gives you goosebumps your vibration is rising! Spirit is able to connect better when the vibes are high as they are already in high vibe, usually so low vibes repell them. The fact that he introduced this music to you is definitely what you call a gift and the energy of that gratitude for that gift is very uplifting and radiates out into the universe touching everything in it path! So you can see now how great music is more than just music as it creates a beacon (you) to amplify it! Obviously it is the same for low vibe music and that has been used in the music industry for years to influence groups of people! God bless you and keep your vibes high!

Pat, so sorry for your loss and the rest of the ensemble, with Lyles passing. You and Lyle have given me, my family and so many of my friends and patients [I am a physical therapist in my own office] magical interludes from the ‘everyday affairs of mankind’. You have lifted many spirits in this physical world to ecstatic heights with your musical interpretations...allowing mere mortals to taste The sweet nectar of The Divinity Inspiring your Souls. The passion and Power of musical performance that You and Lyle exuded is something I have rarely experienced from any other musicians. There are No Words...and You and Lyle Lived that Truth by using voice and instrument- guitar and keyboard -as another instrument for Inspiration from The Soul to pass through you both -and your band- to entertain, Inspire and Enlighten us all... In my heart I Know Lyle is smiling within your heart turning up the lamp of Inspiration to gift you The Best of what is Yet to find Birth into this realm through your creativity and inspiration. Thank You for The Gifts of your MUSIC over the decades. I and my two sons now adults have fabulous memories of You, Lyle and The Band. Lyle...as you Rest a bit within The Heart of God’s Inspiration and Limitless Creativity...May you Bless your Friend Pat with yet to come...The sweetest of Inspirations... “I hold no dreams of fortunes vast Nor seek undying fame I do not ask when life is past That many even know my name. I may not own the skill To rise To glories top Most height Nor to win a place amongst the wise But I can keep the right. And I can live my life on Earth Contented to the end If but a few shall Know My Worth And proudly call me friend...” Towne May God continue to Bless You All... Keith Wilbert

Quite amazing what impact these gentlemen from the Florida School of Music have on people. They themselves would probably not say so. Perhaps they've never even thought of their own music as being "spiritual". I mean, spiritual in the sense of being trancendent, being in touch with something yonder, of reaching and invoking something deeper within the listener. But everyone that has been gripped and moved by the PM Group's music know exactly what I mean. They would perhaps not use the words I do to describe it with... because, yes I know, they do have a tendency to sound kind of pretentious and new agey, but how else can one describe such music, on the very high level it is? It doesn't really matter what words one uses, everyone who knows, knows exactly what I'm trying to say anyway: Pat Metheny group's music is on a level of its own. On my travels I've met people from all four corners of the world, who all share the same kinda special connection to PM music. I mean, I've been on far away secluded beaches in Thailand, moon hanging like a giant drop above the sea, people spinning fire pois, dancing in the night, and then someone flicks on a Pat Metheny piece and suddenly everything slows down into that meditative state. Listening to PM music is like dipping the soul in the warm vast ocean. It's cleansing and one always feel better afterwards, even if one felt really good to begin with. Though... I think it takes a person who has certain valves in her/him open, in order to grasp and appreciate PM music. If you can't hear it...... If you don't get the point, then it comes across as..... Elevator music, I once heard somebody say. One has to have the ability to see beauty, to be tender, to understand such music. And as we all know, "seeing beauty and being tender" are not really qualities most men adhere to volontarily. Pat Metheny music cures headaches, heartaches, and if it doesn't itself heal what ever it is that needs healing, it sure helps alot in the process. Everytime I listen to PM music I'm thinking.... "Yes, that is so right. Why make anything that isn't beautiful. Why play music, why do anything, if it isn't beautiful, if it doesn't fill you like this?" Because it truly does.... fill you with something that feels good in a very real and true way. So after a lot of pondering nose down in a pot full of words that easily can make their writer, or speaker, seem like some difficult bastard with low self esteem who desperately needs to come across as the intellectual he's not, it cuts down to one simple thing: It's just so damn f... beautiful. You never get tired of it.

I was just wondering why your excellent comment had no likes, and then I realised you had only just posted it . :D Perfect.

Man -o-man -were'nt those the days though?. Pat's music contained what we thought was going to be the hope and promise for America. Things have gone kind of bat shit crazy . What really dissapoints is the deep sentimentality of his music which is so opposed to the dead -tech ,corporate culture we have right now.

Having studied jazz at the Master’s level at Indiana University, there is no pianist I admire more than Lyle Mays. His spontaneous melodic and harmonic composition (improvisation) is creative and sensitive at a level worth a lifetime of study. He and Pat were actually introduced to each other by my IU jazz band director, Dominic Spera. Had I known that I would have hugged Dominic and kissed him on the cheek!

Am an amateur musician, better at guitar than piano, can hardly read the notes but easily cover most songs with chords, ranging from Hotel California to Bossa Nova. But when I listen to Pat Matheny/ Lyle Mays...something magical happens, heavenly musical chemistry. I no longer listen to Pat when Lyle Mays passed away, still preferring their musical collaboration. Its what Jazz is all about, two friends "chatting" emotionally, truthfully and impulsively, sometimes in key, scales, sometimes off tangent, skewed but still binding, like all true friendships ♥️♥️

She was a 19 year old Swiss Oper. I was a 26 year old Med student. She didn’t come with me. This song takes me right back to 1982 and our 6 months together , along with the heartache of a life together not lived.

Oh dear, I am recognising this moment, that Lyle Mays has left this world - from earth to heaven. What a beauty he created together with Pat Metheny and all the other magic musicians. In this song deep longing, pain, lust of life is in complete harmony. He has been creating heaven for us - he is not far away. I am very thankful for all the beauty he has given into this world. This song is so beautiful. The samba influence gives it such a hypnotic vibe. Absolutely love the synthed-harmonica melody/solo in the first section, and it almost sounds like Stevie Wonder is playing the harmonica on it. The song elicits some strong emotions - from melancholy and yearning, to breakthrough and release. Love it so much!
