Stunning. Much more complex than most mortals can grok. Guitar players know how difficult this type of playing and rearranging is, and how perfect his tone is. What a treasure this man is.

Pat Metheny has such a wonderful and developed sense of melody and harmony. He plays here with his baritone guitar, hence he not only plays the melody in a different key, but also gives a reharmonization of the whole picture. Simply astounding. This IS ''Last Train Home', played in such a different flavour and feeling. And he does improvise during the piece as well.

The very end sounds like a brief excerpt from "Country poem" from his even older *New Chautauqua* solo album. I love both tunes, so it was a special treat to hear Pat link them here.

Essentially, a lesson in how to retune your guitar, the chords and inflections that Metheny teases out of this simple piece are full of poignancy and conflicting emotion. The melody is the same as the first version (see "Still Life (Talking)" it is the harmonies (chords) that alter and contrast so profoundly with the original. Metheny alters the bass note frequently and this further emphasizes the context of melody, adding to the textural and harmonic quality of the acoustic version. These are well known techniques found in many genres of music, however Metheny brings originality and potency to this interpretation of his own composition.

@@pattyray4841 Well, Metheny's attention to detail is exact, comprehensive and subtle and his musical technique and invention highly impressive. I tried to do justice, in words, however briefly, to his complex and highly technical approach. Not forgetting his very talented co-composer and pianist, Lyle Mayes.
