Gotta say I'm impressed with the small total size of the bags. My sleeping bag would barely stuff into that "house", let alone the tent and sleeping pad. My set up --- Bar bag = tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad (18L capacity, normally 12 used) Post bag = clothes and kitchen (12L capacity, normal half full) Frame bag = tools, spare tubes, etc, and the food for the day, electronics (no idea of capacity... it's a full frame bag, not half) Fork/stay bags if used = heavy stuff, electronics, camera kit, kitchen fuel (5L each used in pairs, normally full if used at all) Bottles go in bottle bags either side of the stem for easy access and extra weight forward.

I’ll start by saying a couple of things ... First up, I’m generally a fan of GCN stuff, secondly, I know full well it is sponsored and commercial. The gear you show here is great kit, really handy and will do the job. Thing is .... how about telling us how much that rig would cost ? The tent alone is advertised at £600 .... which is way too much for what it is. The rest ... who knows but I’m pretty sure I could buy half a plot of land for what it all comes to. My point is .... can you sometimes do a feature where you look at how to achieve similar results without stupidly expensive gear ... just so the rest of us, who won’t ever have that stuff, can get some useful info. I’m fine that you do these too for those few who do have that sort of cash but it isn’t much use to most people really. It should really read “includes stupidly expensive gear promotion” on the start up.
@markl28154 жыл бұрын
Mac J cheers, yeah I’ve seen it Tbh, I’m also canoë expédition and bushcraft guy with an outdoor company so I know that there are much more possible and accessible options, especially if the individual has skills in that sort of stuff. It is just that even if people did have the cash to just “buy a lifestyle” for a trip, a) they don’t need to b) they will still need skills and organisation to make it work c) none of that is featured here I know why, I’m just asking if from time to time something like that could be included. I’m now going off GCN a bit since the change of ownership because it really is (in my view) becoming a glorified ad channel with new content ... mind you, I still watch some of it an also applaud some. Commercial realities I guess but the fun and the accessibility seems to be waning My view, I’m allowed to have one
@raff56045 жыл бұрын
Will GCN have a TV show one day? A lot of us feel that you guys are just as good or better than Top Gear and the production values are excellent . It doesn't have to be an hour (although) if you feature epic rides, a hour weekly show would be fantastic. Road, Gravel and Mountain bikes would keep the attention of many, many of us that love cycling as well as those who aren't crazy about cycling. Just like Top Gear, women that couldn't care less about cars loved the show.
@Boopop10245 жыл бұрын
My guess would be right now it'd be a safer bet sticking to youtube. It works for them currently and presumably there'd be different pressures on them if they tried doing a TV show. Besides all you're gaining by it being on TV is the studio section between segments, and I don't really think that's too great a loss.

You don't need all this stuff to have a good adventure on a bike - when I was 17 I went out on a 150 pound bike with cheap halfords panniers, 'borrowed' my dads camping equipment and cycled back from south wales to manchester camping wherever I found on the way. Never missed any expensive gear. Just a sense of complete freedom. Been cycling ever since. Cycling doesn't have to be expensive and complicated where you need all the latest stuff and 15 tools to do a job. But is something everyone with a strong pair of legs and a dollop of determination can enjoy.

@@DisasterpiecesIRL I like it! They do a 2 man version which isn't *too* much heavier (I think it's about 400 grams from memory, but don't quote me on that). Great video. Just bought my first gravel bike and I'm really interested in finding a good/efficient bag/pack set up. Unfortunately, I ride a 48" frame (I'm a 5'4" woman) and so fitting gear plus keeping my two water bottles seems tricky. In the video, you aren't wearing backpacks and aren't carrying bags with a water bladder. No way you need camp gear but not toting water. What do you do for that? Thanks! that would help me complete the picture. Again, thanks for the video. Great info.

The BMC URS looks comfy and fast but the lack of eyelets on the frame is a problem for remote bike packing when extra food / water is needed. A 700 gr tent work for overnighters. I put my bike in a simple card board box. You can pick up these boxes in any bike shop for free. You can dispose the box when you arrive and pick up a new box at a local bike shop when you are getting ready to fly home again. In my case, I have a very robust Trek 520 . If you have a carbon fibre frame, a card board box might not give the frame the protection it needs.

Most riders don't have the luxury of being supported by a camera crew. Also, as many have observed, the premise of traveling all the way to Patagonia for a three day trip is nonsense. The fact is to outfit a longer trip one needs to carry more stuff, so an endurance race across Europe setup is inadequate. The month I spent in Patagonia it rained everyday. Having a tent to get out of the rain is essential. A dry change of clothes,rain gear, shoes,a first aid kit, food,etc. If you eat in cafes every meal and stay in hostels frequently maybe the minimalist gear in this video is sufficient, otherwise a more conventional,but minimalist touring setup with racks and panniers will be necessary.

I'll start by admitting that I don't have bikepacking experience. However, I do have backpacking experience, and though I'm not an ultralight packer, if I only need to carry 2 to 3 days of food, a 40 L pack is sufficient. Then again, I would need a few extra liters for bike tool and spare part storage if bikepacking. How many liters of storage would you say is necessary, assuming camping out and carrying one or two days of food in between towns/stores?
@janodesjanodes5 жыл бұрын
@@michaelb1761 My month in Patagonian Chile was spent kayaking south of Puerto Mont but I did encounter many bikers traveling the Carretara Austral. They were all sporting the full 5 or 6 bag pannier set. The last gravel bikepacking trip I took was the week long hut to hut Telluride to Moab trip involving approx 6000 ft of climbing gravel forest roads daily for a week. There were fully stocked huts along the way and I just carried my own sleeping bag, but still carried 2 front sized panniers on the back, along with a trunk and handlebar bag. Also found it necessary to wear a hydration pack as clean drinking water was hard to come by. [if there are sheep or cattle anywhere upstream, it is an invitation to guardia] I have done my share of minimalist, credit card touring, and still carried a rain suit and a change of clothes and shoes, a first aid kit etc. Adventure Cycling org is the outfit that mapped and popularized the divide trail and specialize in any and all bicycle adventure. photos.google.com/album/AF1QipPdAk7jlAjCxQzyywYJ3alzZlSmlBt7lgI3wEey/photo/AF1QipPjLAc4XTzXFJ5bGYyV45LVJY17K3V7YuPM95bV

If I were to go touring in far flung places of this world the first condition my bike frame would have to fulfill is being made of steel. @Digi205 жыл бұрын
Used to think the same - but in reality the frame material does not really matter. IF you have such a heavy accident that the frame gets damaged beyong ride-able condition, chances are pretty high that you personaly are also injured beyond ride-able and/or many different parts of the bike are so bust that you cant continue either way.
