Time under tension. I'm 66 years old and only use bands after 40 years of free weights. Yes, easier on the joints and I usually do it as a HIIT workout. I use one piece bands and I love them!

Absolutely with the front loading for squats and for the overall useful movements. Great content for us mid-trip down the road of life guys. Check ego's at the door, we still got a way to go yet.

At almost 59 and at this game since I got out of boot camp in 82. I still use free weights and I incorporate band work. Arthritis in both knees from being an athlete my whole life doesn’t stop me. You just have to lift smarter. Squats are king if done correctly! “Let your booty do it’s duty!” You can use that Pat! Just give me some props. I do RDL’s instead of traditional dead lifts. I agree with the transverse plane work. Strong core and erectors equals less injury. Listen to your body as you age! You’ll need more recovery as you get older. Especially as you approach 50. Stay disciplined, humble and never give up! Semper Fortis.

Took a winter job in Northern MN, outdoor hockey rink manager. Pushed a snowblower operated the m1a1 shovel all winter plus snowblower my own driveway. 63 years old and definitely getting dumber! Shoveling snow is great for hockey when fighting for the puck in the corners! Chore on boys! Good for the soul!

Come fall, I’ve got a half acre of timber to clear. Some oak, and sweet gum. Split the oak, and stack the sweet gum into bonfire. Cut my logs into around 100lb wet pieces. I roll the logs onto my feet. Rise chest and hips same time, then carry 25 -40 meters. I try and kimchi squat , rather than bend also in daily life.

back squat is about building strength as well as building muscle. Most people do it because they can move more weight with a back squat than a front squat. A lot of people who body build also do front squats to better target quad growth.

I think the best workouts are the ones you'll actually do. LOL I tell people all the time just do something and do something that's fun to you. I grew up playing football, baseball, and wrestling and am now 52. Started playing tennis after college (would workout 1x/wk also) and all the rotation and movement finally took a toll on my hips and knees and I stopped playing about 4-5 years ago. I only do CrossFit now but try to listen to my body regarding how hard I go in workouts. I think it's tremendously important as you age to do some sort of resistance training to build and/or maintain muscle mass. Muscle is pretty much a cure-all for a lot of things. At 52 I'm the strongest I've ever been by far but there's a limit to how far I'm going to push that. I'm at a point now I want to try and maintain strength and improve aerobic capacity. Good stuff Pat Mac!

I wish I had known how much damage I was doing to my shoulders when I was maxing out on the bench press when I was younger. It's almost comical to see all the guys my age in the gym with the same shoulder surgery scars that I have. I'm 68 now and my shoulders and knees are a mess. I hired a trainer to show me non-impact and non-shoulder/knee hurting movements. Yes, there's bands.

Pat - If you weren't aware, you have a following in the UK ! I aim to train in the same spirit as you - ego in the back pocket and with the strength and flexibility that you have, rather than what you used to have or wish you had. Difficult sometimes if you were very fit back in the day.... (I was in the British airborne forces and subsequently the police in London). I always start with stretching, shadow boxing and flexibility exercises borrowed from yoga to warm up the hips, groin, legs and upper body before moving to bodyweight (press ups, Russian twists etc.) and kettle bells. I warm down at the end the same way. May not work for everyone but does for me and it's good to still be in shape at 62. Hang in there mate. Warm regards Simon, London England.

I'm a 61 year old CST practitioner having purchased the program four months ago and I'm loving it! A little confused here though....The program includes the bench press, back squat, and deadlift, as well as other strength building exercises involving weights which I am doing. They are even demonstrated in the explainer videos in the program. Here we're told to get away from those exercises. Can you clarify? Thanks! Jack.
@cainmorano4956
@cainmorano4956 2 жыл бұрын
The problem isn't so much the movement, it's that they can quickly become tests where our ego takes over and we're trying maximal weights (like a 1 to 3 RM). Then, if you're not used to doing these or have injuries, these lifts can become more dangerous than others. Barbell movements are useful because they can be loaded heavily but that's also the danger. So barbell movements are ok but use lighter weight. You don't have to do high reps either. You can use light weight and do low reps - practice technique and speed which will generate power.

@@cainmorano4956 Thanks for the response! Great advice. I'm a small guy at 5'5" and 150 lbs. Been following the CST Program 4 months now. I've been doing the 5X5X5 method varying the exercises all the time as Pat suggests. On strength day, my last set of bench is 175 lbs. X 5, last set of back squat is 190 lbs. X 5, and deadlift is 200 lbs. x 5. I'm not having any pain or problems at this juncture, so I now plan to just keep the weights where they are and not go any heavier on any of them. I'll hold what I have while I'm still ahead. It's true about ego lifts. In my 20's I was benching 325 weighing 150 lbs. Damn lucky that I quit that before I hurt myself. I do love this program though, and I feel so much better and stronger since I stopped crushing myself every workout. I keep hearing Pat in my head as I train...."IT'S FITNESS, NOT BROKENESS!" Thanks Cain, and all the best to you! Jack

@@50PlusWarriorFitness And if you do want to keep going, you can get stronger with the same load. You can go faster, slower, concentrate on one phase of a contraction, shorten rests, use a variation, add instability, and a bunch of other stuff. That's awesome you lifted so much and made it out unscathed! Stay healthy sir!
