Church Andrews (aka Kirk Barley) and percussionist Matt Davies describe their recent collaborative project NEIGHBOURS as a “conversation” between their instruments, in which digital synthesis and drums combine in an exploration of timbre, tuning and time signatures influenced by jazz, hip-hop and dub techno.
On this episode of Patch Notes, the duo present a performance that marks what they say is marks a “transitional period” in their development as a duo, which sees them experimenting with two of Polyend’s Perc drum robots to add some unique acoustic percussive elements to their setup, which also includes a Boss KM-60 Mixer for adding subtle distortion, Roland RT-30 drum trigger and Akai MPD 226 MIDI controller.
“The first two tracks are Patch Notes exclusives, new jams we haven’t documented yet,” the duo says. “The third track is a live rendition of ‘TRACE’ from our EP, with additions of the Polyend Perc on a handpan. The final track is an improvisation exploring a sound palette and rhythmic interaction between Matt and the Polyend Perc.”
NEIGHBOURS is available now from Bandcamp: health.bandcam...

2020 really has brought out the musicianship in musicians. It's forced real artists to really take a look at their craft and fall in love all over again. It's a wake up call that monetary influence is a destructive musical force when used to pander to the masses.

@@jasru2019 As for Max MSP: the kick sounds like it is being triggered. The sample can be triggered from any basic DAW so MAX-Msp is overkill for this basic task. It miht actually be a blend of acoustic signal and trigger. As for the bottom left snare, that is actually a midi-controlled beater inside a sphere and is responsible for the really fast digital sounding snare figures. As far as I can tell the other drums sounds are all coming through the mics from acoustic drums. They sound more electronic because of how much dampening is being applied to the drums and the very dry flat curved cymbals. The headphones look like Sure 215 which is a farily industry standard in-ear monitoring headphone used for on-stage monitoring. They are designed to not draw attention to themselves with transparent plastic design. Hope this helps.

The goal of drum machines used to be to sound like real drums. Over time, many of us have grown to love our goofy little robot drums. The 808 is practically a religion. I can't stand drum machines that sound like real drums. Ew. So hair metal. Actual percussionists I dig, especially when they are very good. This guy has skills and a real sense of groove, not to mention being a human metronome. And for an actual drummer to sound like a drum machine, a nicely programmed Digitakt? Very cool. And not just a set of hexagonal drum trigger pads, but a nice mix of acoustic and electronic. Bravo, gentlemen! Bravo!

Looks like there's some sort of motor/flapper being triggered that's hitting the hang drum (not a shell) and by turning on/off the turntable he modulates the notes being played.
@BiblicalAngels
@BiblicalAngels 3 жыл бұрын
On the turntable looks like a handpan with a shemagh on it, that’s being struck by a Polyend Perc (which is midi controlled by whatever DAW he’s using). He starts the turntable and recording of the handpan... the Perc strikes the handpan and generates (I’m assuming) random melodic patterns, based on the start stop points, the different pitch points (dimples on the handpan) and the midi pattern he’s written. He turns the turntable and recording off and runs the new loops for a while; before fading out. Rinse, repeat.
