I was lucky to get a 5196R before it gets discontinued and bought it for the exact same reasons. Great video as always!

Great content. I got my 5196G-001 3 years ago and I must say its understated elegance is exactly what makes it loud. Perfect dress watch for my taste. Got it retail from Patek and while its not a Nautilus, its secondary market price doesn't seem to disappoint at all. Albeit, at a slower pace of course. And now that it's been discontinued after an 18-year run, it just makes it more valuable and timeless for those who enjoy the classics. This is the watch I'm keeping and passing on if I had to toss all the rest away. I would love to see you do a video exclusively on the 5196G-001 though. I don't think I've seen much content, much less of the same quality as yours, with the 5196 in white gold alone and it's a shame that it doesn't get much attention, at least for its class. I'll be crossing my fingers for this from you. Cheers!

Thank you for your kind and very detailed comment. I (obviously) agree with you that the 5196G is understated dress watch perfection. Will try to do a more detailed look at it soon :) Enjoy yours in good health and knowing it has been discontinued recently :)

Great video. 5196 is my dream watch. I can’t wait to own it one day. $23k is too much for me to afford 😞

Bought my 5196R new back in 2005 for €10.000, glad I did and probably worth a little more today.

Oh I'm always happy to see a new episode of your pop up. I prefer the white gold if I was given the choice and what you said about a Calatrava becoming a "collectable" might be what they are thinking of if they increase the size to 39 which of course would be a shame. Looking forward to your next episode as always.

These are my two favorite colors for the 5196, but I slightly prefer the J over the G. I'd wear either with pleasure.

I got the yellow gold one in December 2019 and my AD has not had another one since, most Pateks are now hard to get, fine video thank you

Congrats on the yellow gold one - timeless classic. Needless to say that I‘m happy to have been able to secure one at the last minute :)

I don't get the argument for open case back people. Synthetic sapphire is cheaper than gold, and they can save the photos of the movement from Patek's website and look at them all they want. One thing that put me off from 5196 was the constant second subdial, like you mentioned, and the 21 mm lug width, which was a bit much for me, especially living in a hot and humid climate most of the year. Do you think Patek is more likely to introduce the 5196's successor in a more classic size because they have recently released Calatravas that range from 39 mm to 40 mm? Patek has customers worldwide and needs to service those with slimmer wrists. Besides, rich people who can afford Pateks won't be overweight anymore with Ozempic.

Great content, beautiful understated timepieces. Congrats!!! You are blessed to be in a position to own two. I don’t think Patek Philippe discontinued their classic flagship reference this year. The 5196 is still listed on their website. They do offer a new hobnail bezel variant of the 5196. Not sure what exact reference number. IMHO knowing Patek Philippe, they might produce a few possibilities. New reference number for sure…. 1) 39mm size with a larger movement with an option of a solid or sapphire case back. 2) Same size larger movement w/case back options. 3) A modern 2526 version in 5327 case! Big wish for Calatrava enthusiasts. I would sell a few of my Rolex watches for something like a modern 2526. For it’s time it was fairly durable. Solid screw down case back, enamel dial. However, with the state of the overall global demand. It’s difficult for Patek Philippe to produce enough watches to meet the needs of clients. They only make 50k to 80k watches per year. It’s not like they can hire more watch makers. It takes a few years of training as technician, not including specialized training. I myself will get a Patek Philippe 5196 in a few years. First I need to get my Rolex Pepsi for my 50th birthday

Thanks for your comment. I believe the 5196 is or will be discontinued, at least that‘s what I heard from several people. We will likely know more by the end of this month. I personally expect one variation analogue to the 6119 (to which you referred to) to be released.

its successor will certainly be larger in size so I won't be interested in it. I would love it if they released a 35mm version.

Thoughts on the 5096 ( the 34 mm version ) compared to the 5196 ?
@watchyouare

Good question, if you consider vintage why not. But then again, why not the 3796? Like the sapphire case back, case diameter is closer to the original as well, but - likely because of that - doesn‘t look as slender as the 5196.

@@watchyouare 3796 is great especially the rose gold with rose dial ( japanese limited edition ) but it might be too small for my taste . I love classicism but I want my watches to be modern even if I go classic

The 5196 is beautiful and timeless. Perfect in a case display. But on an average wrist looks a bit too big for a dress watch. OK with a tweed jacket, already a little bulky with a business suit and definitely large in black tie (specially that extra wide strap). A vintage Calatrava (like the 3843 or 2420) looks much better IMHO.

Thanks Hector, glad to hear from someone more conservative than me 😄👌 Really curious what they will bring out this year, likely a 39 which - like you - I find way too large in terms of diameter. Allthough I checked and the lug to lug dimensions of the 6119 are very close to the 5196
