They weren't always called "podcasts" but gained the moniker because Apple made listening to them easier on an iPod (at the time they needed podcasts). They were also called "Netcasts," "Webcasts"," or "Internet Radio" (some older shows still have "radio" in their titles like "Gamertag Radio." I like Rob Walch's definition, he said *in part* that a podcast is an audio program with an RSS feed.

Tbh, youtube implementing podcasts seems to be a great thing for many creators, as it gives creators their own space to be discovered more easily

Agreed. I think it could go one step further and add discord or zoom style integration for interviews or participation during a stream or private session so you could record the podcast as well.

Yeah but then there's YT's policies, and sometimes vague and broad striking and demonetizing practices, especially towards creators who don't agree with the same political/social ideas as the monkeys behind the screen at YT HQ.

As an audio only listener, I hate that you have to have YT open on mobile and when the phone turns off, the podcast stops. So, I don't consume podcasts on YT. It will be VERY interesting to see how YT implements RSS feeds. YT's analytics are top notch so I'm not sure how companies such as Podbean, Blubrry, Libsyn, etc. are going to compete.

I’m super happy about this integration. I have been flip-flopping on different content strategy ideas for a long time and this actually incorporates everything I wanted to do. A longform podcast on top of a KZbin channel that can easily feed into each other. Thanks for covering this and I’m looking forward to anything else about KZbin podcasts :)

I experimented with this feature and put an audio podcast on with a still image. I was horrified to see it show up in my main feed. And then surprised to see it do better than other videos. I am best known as a podcaster so that may have affected the outcome. But audiences may not have the difficulty we think. So, there’s one data point.

Great questions, Pat. I was actually just thinking about the possibility of setting video game let's plays as a podcast to test out. They share many similarities with podcasts - longform, episodic in nature, etc. - and with KZbin pushing this feature, it had me wondering if they may actually get more of a push by being labeled as a podcast. Also, that line of "same audience, same channel - different audience, different channel" is oh so hard to nail down as a creator!

Here's another question, for YOU (and, for KZbin, by extension). Once the integration is complete, will every time someone LISTENS to a video from a Podcast playlist in KZbin Music, will it count as a VIEW? 🤔 And if so, will that WATCH TIME count towards qualifying for the YT Partner Program? 🤷‍♀🤷‍♂

I have a small YT channel and was moving away from YT to create podcast content full-time... Some of my YT viewers were sad that I was leaving as they ONLY watch YT and wouldn't even consider listening to a podcast . They are now happy that they can listen to my podcasts on YT and don't care that there is only one static image for the whole podcast episodes. I tried creating a visual story to follow the podcast stories and it took MANY MANY hours to do and not worth the effort as the views show.

Podcasters have been posting their audio on KZbin as a video with just a stationary image showing on the screen for years. KZbin didn't call these broadcasts podcasts but that's what they were. These "videos" are how I got introduced to listening to podcasts back in 2016. It's also how I found some of the podcasts I listen to today. KZbin's new podcast service will help podcasters by giving them one more place to be found. I don't think podcasters should put a lot of effort into making their content into a video production. A podcast's unique value is that it can be listened to while doing something else. Last point, I don't foresee many podcast listeners making KZbin their primary source of content. Most will keep listening on platforms like iTunes, Stitcher and Overcast. Podcasters should not publish exclusively on KZbin but should treat it as a way to reach new listeners who will listen and subscribe on other platforms.

Ahhh we have been debating taking our podcast episodes off our channel and creating a new channel and focus on just YT viewers for our current channel. Now what do we do?? 😂😂😂

I still have an IPod that works and I use!!! So glad you are covering this as I didn't understand why they have a Podcast option, but it's super cool the episodes get more distribution and will continue to grow. What happens if you duplicate some of your content exactly from one channel to another - I thought that goes against KZbin's terms and conditions, but I know that some of my videos would likely do very well duplicated on another channel for a specific segment of my audience, that could grow into a bigger segment of it's own, but it still very relevant to my main audience?

Wooooow.. interesting. A few months ago Google announced they would stop presenting the podcast carousel in search results. Some people wondered why they were dropping the podcast crawling experiment they've been doing for the last couple years. I guess this answers the question. 🤔

Great probing questions Pat. I think it's still early 'daze' and the audience analytics will decide. I'm in Favor of anything that will help spread the word and build my audience. The big thing is the amount of time it takes to publish a podcast is much less than for a video.

I enabled stream to KZbin on Libsyn then realized all it was doing was duplicating essentially the same content so I removed it. I record a main interview which we release on the channel to help promote the podcast, but it’s not the entire podcast, only the main interview, which makes more sense to me than duplicating things. Podcasting is hard.

All great questions Pat! I set up my interview playlist and changed name to channel name and set to Podcasts. KZbin's instructional video said to not include the word "podcast" in the title, but now I am wondering if I should to distinguish it?

Likely similar to how shorts have their own category link on the video tab.

I’ve been doing it and it’s essentially a playlist with a designation of podcast off to the right. You can upload content and select a regular playlist as well as the podcast. The first time you do this you would set up the podcast with a description and static thumbnail. After that anything you upload can also be checked to store in that list as well. As he’s saying here, eventually the episode going to audio on to KZbin music as well as your rss feed to go out to platforms like Apple Podcasts will be available too.

This is a headache more than a blessing it seems at the moment. I wish they'd differentiate podcast playlists from regular channel videos so it doesn't hurt engagement/watch time analytics.

It does. You can select an upload to go to a regular playlist as well as the podcast and then you will see separate analytics for the podcast side. I’ve been using it almost a month and content is getting views on both.

@@KevinNordstrom yes and no…the podcast site KZbin started is like another shelf for content and you have to set it up in studio from computer then it’s basically a playlist with a special designation off to the right of “podcast” when you upload content for it from then on you can select it to be listed there as well as other playlists on your channel. If it’s in the podcast designated playlist it will have additional analytics showing you how it’s performing on that side of KZbin. Just think of it as a category that if you don’t put content in, it won’t go in that category.

It’s definitely a bit confusing right now. I’m hoping for clarity as this rolls out. Currently 27 interviews selected for the podcast playlist and a logo made. Time will tell!

it’s a playlist category they added. To access it, go to KZbin studio from a computer and tap “create” in the upper right. You’ll see “new podcast” as an option there. When you have content for a podcast and you select that it will ask for a couple pieces of information and then it’s a playlist in your available playlists when you upload from then on. The rest of the features they’re rolling out like creating an audio version and being shown on the main podcast page are if you’re getting tons of views and interaction. Hope this helps

Thank you for this, Pat. I suppose everything depends on what KZbin envisions for this. If they envision this being a platform for podcast listeners who have no interest in seeing images as they consume content, then sticking one visual on an old podcast and uploading it if still relevant should do the trick. But is this how I should view it? What about newbie's just starting out on the platform for the sake of having a podcast that is searchable. Is there anything in your opinion that we should be thinking about?

I listen often when I need to be "hands-free" and I hate trying to listen to a video (I often do) and getting stuck in the ad loop because I'm driving. UGH. What do you think?

Thanks for the vid. Lets assume I record video podcasts. I use the audio for my regular podcasts, what happens if a use a distribution platform (for spotify and others), and now want to add the video podcast to youtube, will that be considered a podcast or a regular video on my channel? How would search be effected? I doubt listeners would prefer a video podcast, and I'm not sure how many listen to podcasts on youtube, as opposed to watching the podcast.

Just show us how to get say an existing Playlist that we want to get to you tube podcast. Including making sure we get the square thumbnail uploaded I can't seem to get studio to let me change the thumbnail to square for the podcast listing

I started a separate channel for my podcast because I was advised by youtube experts out there that you don't want these hour long videos mucking up your video list. My question is, if I set up a playlist as a podcast does KZbin take those videos, remove it from my main video feed, and add it to a podcast tab on my channel (like shorts do)? Or do they still sit in my "Videos" section and get in the way of my other videos? If they do it like they do with shorts then I'd consider moving my podcast (which is fairly new, only 5 episodes) back to my own channel because it's the same target audience.

I believe they stay on your main video feed along with it separately within its own playlist. Unless you can remove it from the main video shelf separately

i am wanting to start a podcast and wish to use Garageband. However, getting the settings correct and reducing or eliminating all of the unwanted white noise is driving me crazy!! Pat, do you know how to do this? I have looked through your previous podcasts on Garageband and find that you and many others overlook getting the settings right to make it sound anywhere near as professional as you sound!

The more answers I get, the more confused I am. Is it primarily for video podcasts? If it goes to the KZbin Music app, it'd just be playing the audio, right? So if I have an audio podcast, it'd make sense to create a graphic for the video track, upload it as a podcast, and then get it onto KZbin music where it's only the audio. Right?

The creator can choose to monetize it like a regular video and will likely pay just like a regular video, as opposed to shorts which have a separate frestment

I'm sensing some level of scrutiny that seems of artifice, which is unusual for your videos. "Podcasts" have taken on a certain format because of talk radio/public radio and I don't see the addition of a KZbin category necessarily changing that. And the question of whether or not the podcast fits your audience is something that is covered by what most people say on the topic of channel topic, and now confirmed by KZbin - that if your topic relates to your channel's audience, then keep it there. A big reason why I don't dip into the podcasting waters is because it's more work. Setting up new accounts, payments and everything associated with podcasting is something I don't want to add. KZbin Podcasts sounds like it makes it easy - and you don't have to pay money to host the content on a different platform. Add RSS feed and AdSense and it just makes sense!

They're like "now you can take videos, and put them in to a playlist!" ......isn't that just a playlist? I really don't get the concept of a podcast video. It would make sense if YT made an audio only version of your selected video, and there's your podcast, and people could find it wherever they get podcasts, or in a KZbin podcast player. Otherwise I don't get it.

It's dumb KZbin is not a place for podcast. People on KZbin are not long form listeners unless it's trash.

They don't make sense to me. If they were also audio playable when people use podcasting apps such as Google podcasts or Spotify podcast, then it would be a real podcast. Otherwise it's just video blogs. It should be RSS feed as well. I should also have audio versions. It should also have an algorithm to check if a video is designed like a podcast with an introduction and conclusion and a commentary because podcasts are usually involve people talking.
