The irony I find is that I actually watch your videos for the chill, calming vibe while I get ready to start work for the day, or when I need some focus to get preparing my content. Obviously I find huge value in your content and have definitely found myself implementing things you've mentioned, but I am definitely here for the vibes and for you. I'd watch anything you made tbh.

Winning formula is to give your viewers the thing they want to see. Being a KZbinr is business, and business owners give people products/services that people need in their life. It's practically the same. And when the growth becomes real, you can consider hiring people to help you run your channel more efficiently. The most difficult part is starting and growing of course, but consistency and hard work (with a little bit of Famester to help) will always pay off at the end. Good luck to everyone, I really hope you are all going to succeed one day.

Your video has confirmed exactly what I decided today after attending a motivational conference this morning. I was on the brink of deleting old videos from my platform just so I could niche down entirely but trying to niche down took all the joy out of why I joined YT in the first place! I decided I’ll continue to let my personality shine through and even if I don’t grow as fast as other KZbinrs, as long as I stay consistent and authentic I know I’ll grow eventually because at least I get to keep my creative joy 🥰Thank you so much for this and for being honest about your journey. ❤

Thank you for this video! I like the change in mindset approach. I have done a soft pivot when the style of videos I used to do (video game music covers) started to wane so I pivoted to video game music reactions and the success is staggeringly better. It worked for me because video game music is and has always been my passion. Now I feel an even better relational connection with my audience. I felt stupid for how long it took me to do this because my biggest hurdle was really just me, my stubborn refusal to have a change of mindset. But now that I did the change, I feel so in control and that I can do anything. Thank you for explaining everything very clearly and making me understand things I didn't know I already am doing.

Yes, yes and YES! That’s what I’m struggling with in past couple of months. I have this channel (and a second one tbh) and I stopped making videos cause the niche (I didn’t chose as it may seem) is not my passion. Once I got viral with my apartment tour. And then I filmed vlogs, some tips for organizing Notion, and content with my immigration process. But I want to be more than that and o was afraid I will not be understood by my audience. And maybe even YT algorithm will be confused and will not recommend my new content (KZbin and self growth related) for new people. Thank you for inspiration, I adore you and what you’re doing. Will try to relax and slowly change my ‘niche’. Cause obviously I wanna grow here, I want to inspire others and share my life. ❤

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I took a long break from KZbin because of general overwhelm and starting a 9 to 5. My old content is thrifting vintage home decor for resale. While I was on my break and battling my overwhelm, I turned my whole life around, slowly becoming a minimalist - which does not go with my current channel theme. At all. My channel is still fairly small, but I decided to do a quick pivot and not easing my audience into it. Currently, I am not monetized (anymore) and at this level, it won't do any harm. I am so sad that I am not passionate about my former content, but I don't see myself doing this anymore. I uploaded one recent thrift haul video and I didn't enjoy it like I used to. It's time to change.

This is why I like being a small channel, I have the freedom to do whatever I want. Bigger channels have so much pressure to keep to the same thing and the audience expects them to stay the same for years. It’s probably one of the reasons why a lot of the big KZbinrs are retiring. It’s not about having fun anymore, it’s just about the algorithm and trying to make money.

Katie, you did a fantastic job of explaining what I have been thinking and feeling when it comes to my content. The idea of creating videos that are valuable AND that feature myself as a person has consistently felt antithetical to me. Your approach though feels like a win for us as creators and for the audience. I love the concept of moments in the video for the audience and moments in videos for me. That feels like a sustainable way to approach content creation. Also, I would love to know how you are thinking about podcasting! I saw that you are starting to upload your podcast to KZbin. I am excited to hear about how that has been going, and what your thoughts on "clips channels" are. Some podcasts like Ali Abdaal's Deep Dive have their podcast clips on one channel. I've wondered how creators make the decisions to break up the content into two channels. Thank you so much by the way! I've very much enjoyed your content over the last few months. You're one of my favorite KZbin tips creators. Your content is practical without using techniques that make your audience feel a sense of scarcity or missing out. The chill vibes are absolutely felt in your videos.

I’ve watched what seems like a thousand videos about how to start a YT channel, and as you mentioned, every one of them said, “You have to pick a niche and stick with it.” Seeing this video has convinced me to do my niche, but do it MY way; provide top level information and training but also include how the results of encountering rejection and/or being overly aggressive in its implementation can have a negative impact on your business and your emotions. At the end of 2023 I started this youtube channel and started releasing music. I was originally planning to niche down and only upload 1 genre of music because so many channels say thats the only way to be successful on youtube. Hi Katie - I can verify your 'adding a bit of me' into my videos for results. My small channel was jogging along but not really growing. The change came when I started appearing in the thumbnail and the video. I now use a quick pre intro to peak interest at the start the video - then the intro and two or three midrolls. The results are in the analytics! Now for my last tip - be human! I don't do perfect. I fluff my lines and make mistakes and leave them in. As long as the message is understandable. Thank you for your take on growing a channel😃😃😎😎

This is EXACTLY the video I needed!!! 💕I made it to 10,000 subscribers uploading videos about what it's like working fully-remote as a software engineer while traveling the world. I got a lot of my subscribers from the fact that tech is a trendy topic and most of them don't care about the travel aspect of it. I am getting tired of posting videos about coding and work day in the lifes and I just want to post more about my travels and adventures but whenever I post a video like this I get super low views.... I felt like I was stuck in that "tech" box and can't get out of it but THIS VIDEO GAVE ME THE HOPE AND MOTIVATION I NEED RIGHT NOW 🙏🏻✨ I will use the strategies to pivot organically and see where it goes. I am lucky because the topic I want to pivot into is something that has been a part of my channel from the beginning but it's still not easy. Thanks so much Katie! ♥

Great video and very helpful! I agree with starting to create different content from the beginning. That is how I started because I didn't want to niche down. I wanted to be authentically me and share different things because I did not want to feel stuck.

Thank you so much for the advice Katie - this is by FAR one of the most helpful videos about "niching or not niching" and pivoting - I am a big believer in trying different formats in the beginning with a small audience, throw spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks. sprinkle your channel with different types of videos from the beginning. that way when you pivot, it's not a stark change - granted it may take longer to grow/find an audience BUT slow growth is not such a bad thing p.s. love the coffee chats and the desert sunset, enjoying an Americano ☕🪩🌵

I will still watch your videos even if you decide to pivot. I know one content creator that did that. I still watch her. I also love how she still talks about her YT journey in here videos here and there. At the end of the day it’s about you and you have to do what brings you joy

I watched this video shortly after it came out and thought it was just like any other videos. But I've watched it again today and it makes so much more sense. I am that creator who's audience seem to come and get the information they need, then leave. I have got a bit disillusioned with my niche as I've felt that I'm a bit bored with just spewing out information. I like the more creative, vlogging side of creation. So I'm going to start pivoting. Thank you for this video, it's given me the motivation to be more creative and show more of my personality....and I do watch your other videos 😉

It's incredible that, recently, I made a video showing exactly that, and I'm just only starting. I love doing creative storytelling videos. That's where my creativity gets full. You can see that exactly in my KZbin channel trailer. In my recent video, where I talked about 3 crucial questions that everyone needs to answer even before thinking about starting a YT channel, I bring this subject up. For me, it's essential we can, from time to time, change a bit our content into something more personal, something that fulfills us. And if we can do that without getting to far away from our channels niche, even better. I'm glad that, even though I'm starting this journey, to be able to see someone who is already established, to think the same way I think. Keep up the good work. Cheers.

I'm a published kids author trying to figure out how I want to incorporate KZbin (and other video platforms etc) and this was SO helpful from a mindset standpoint. It's so tempting to chase the numbers but I feel like the slow growth where people are coming for me not the tutorials is so smart. Especially since I'm coming at this from a writer/author standpoint, not a video creator standpoint.

I saved this video for later and now that I watch it I have to come to comments even though I'm no further than at 3:51. I just needed to hit pause as this was a totally mind-blowing thought. With a photojournalist background, I just realized that this is exactly my problem. I'm way too information-based. Not so much here on KZbin but in my blogs. I share information, a LOT of information, and work hard to get all the facts checked. Then I wonder why people come and go. Why do they read only one article, why they don't like my content? Suddenly I realize that yes, they do like it, but when they come from the search engines I served them already and gave them what they needed. So I'll need to concentrate more on giving them a reason to stay with me. Yikes, I had a dream that I can rely on Google and I can get rid of the social media, but that's not gonna happen with this thought. Though in KZbin it doesn't matter. Maybe I stop writing my blogs and concentrate more on KZbin... Thank you so much Katie for this mind-opening thought! And now I continue watching and stop writing a novel here :D

Recently I got accustomed to espresso with hot water. The secret is to wait a little bit when the boiled water cools down for 2-5 degrees so the boiled water won't break down the lipid structure. sometimes I shoot espresso right in to the glass with the hot water, so the crema will be still there.

Spot on. The pivot can’t be a separate video. I do quilting, but also enjoy machine embroidery. You’d think those are sister niches, but I lose subscribers when I do the embroidery videos. It works out best when I incorporate them into the main videos. People may skip that part, but they’re still watching what they’re interested in and I’m making what I enjoy.

I decided that my "niche" would be hobby exploration and teaching my audience how to become better at their hobby (whatever it is), and my YT Shorts/Instagram is tips on specific hobbies I'm interested in-just started my YT channel a month ago so not sure how well it will do but honestly it doesn't feel restricting, especially since I add vlog clips of my hobbies here and there. I've always hated that I had to "niche" down, so my niche is a broad topic LOLOL

I am so happy that I discovered your channel! I am not a fan of niches, nor having 2345 KZbin channels for each "niche". I started creating content in November 2023, only by making shorts to learn how to film, to acquire editing skills (and still experimenting). Then I posted some 'long' videos and I am trying to integrate my personality (even in the shorts). I started as a "how to cook" & "low cal recipes" to help ppl who want to achieve a body goal or decrease calorie intake. The only "problem" is that I am a biomedical scientist (oncology & immunology) and would love to integrate some scientific facts (evidence-based!) for example, the link between certain foods & the immune system, cancer, and other diseases, food & fitness. But now, I am worried that I will lose my small group of subscribers if I start to do so. The good thing is, that I mentioned it in my bio: 'unspecified KZbin niche' science, food, fitness =D ! I hope that it will work because I really love talking about science and spreading knowledge & educate people.

You can’t please everybody but you want to share your content with everyone. You want people to invest their time into the creator not just the content. I create and share my videos on what I want and if people like my personality, cool and if people like my content, cool but if people don’t like my personality or my content then it’s ok.

I am a new creator, and I totally appreciated this video! I think I am going to incorporate personal stories here and there in my content now. Its kinda like, when you go to the same restaurant, not just because the food is good, but you see the same friendly faces and you get to know about their life and family, etc. Thank you for this video, I needed to hear this. I subscribed and am looking forward to watching you for you! And learning more about growing my content as well..the best of both worlds ❤

i love that you still do the coffee chats & taking advantage of the environment around you, recording outside in front of the cactuses & during golden hour was so cool!! anyway, your advice always helps out. i currently feel like how you felt back in 2021 and i really needed to hear this. ironically i literally made the decision to now introduce more than just my 1 main niche to my channel because i also feel like how you felt - trapped in a box. i will be taking it in a slow approach, like still post my main niche but slowly also bring in these new niches at the same time. thank you so much for this as it does give me some hope

I hit play thinking I’d disagree, but turns out, I totally agree. It’s like how we do “thought leadership” in SEO. It’s all about showing you’re an expert, not just chasing ranks. However, there’s always a balance! You still need to create content that fits your SEO strategy to show YT you’re an expert within a particular vertical.
