Love the idea of one shoe only, when touring. Have you tried the Keen Venice H2 water sports sandal, as stiffer and more robust than Crocs (which I also love). You can add waterproof sealzskin socks if dewy grass, rainy and cold etc and whip them off when sun comes out. Wash under tap. Or just add normal socks if chilly but dry. Plus we've been wearing trekking shirts for years, so good call. Finally I use flat pedals with toees just for touring, you get some pull up and can stand in them climbing hills. Never see them mentioned in blogs or KZbin...don't they exist in US? The Keen sandals have a rubber toe bumper which fits perfectly under the toee. Love yourvideos -happy cycling😊

I love this video dude! I’m a bike tech and I always try to educate people about bikes and I always get those people that have been influence by there “ know it all bike friend “ that need 1x12 or hydro breaks, full suspension when all they are doing is riding around the neighborhood lol I believe 3x9 has its place just like 1x12 and mechanical breaks
@BitwiseMobile
@BitwiseMobile 2 жыл бұрын
I swapped my 1x12 for a 3x9 microshift on purpose. I stopped downhill riding a few years ago. I'm in my 50s now, and I just don't have the agility, or healing ability, that I did in my 20s and 30s, so bombing down crazy hills is no longer a page in my book. I still like to ride though, and I refuse to buy a roadie bike, so I put in a 3x9 groupset which is perfect for riding around town and on the trails they have around here. I have been riding since I was 6 and I used to build my own BMX bikes back in the day. I do miss the days when all you need is a set of wrenches. Now I have to buy half a dozen specialized tools just to do some regular maintenance.

Agreed on all points, although i switch between modes. Flat pedals and sandals on the town basketbike for calm errands around town and then full roadie kit for roadbike weekend century rides. For long rides the tights and road shoes are not really to go faster, it's to make riding into half day headwinds just a little easier. Proper bike and kit for either disciplines methinks Remember ditching shoes in favor of sandals on my first long tour. Situational fluidity

My current favourite bike is 1x7 with an old Suntour friction shifter, a much newer Deore XT derailleur, Uni glide sprockets (when one wears down you first turn it and then replace the single sprocket), historic Dura Ace brake levers (non-sti), and Shimano cantilevers. Works wonderfully.

My buddy and I toured across central and eastern Oregon a couple of years ago in Hawaiian shirts and Tevas. At first, people didn't believe us because we didn't "look like cyclists." But we ended up making friends with some locals because we were more concerned with having fun adventures than riding fast or looking cool. Now, we have a network of free places to stay the next time we're in the area! Take THAT lycra and carbon fiber!

I also used to ride in crocs but the sole of the shoe gets super worn from the flat pedal pins. Ride concepts have made a flip flop with an awesome mtb sole so they grip like they're supposed to and you still get the versatility and breathability of a croc

A good friend of mine loves his Crocs. Being he beat Lance by a few minutes at the Rattlesnake 100, I'd say he's a fairly serious rider. He also has been know to wear less than aero cutoff jeans and "Foreigner" cutoff shirts. I'm a former pro-mountain bike dyude who was quite serious. Serious enough to win several 6,12 & 24 hour races, yet I rock the cable-actuated disc brakes and rim brakes on my fun-to-drive daily-driver bikes. Hydraulic disc brakes are overrated - until it gets really wet or muddy. Mebbe you're a touch polarized with fast people? Tip: Merino shirts. So practical and stink-free! Like, 5-days in a row odor-free. Is that quirky enough? 😛

1. I'm fine with flat pedals and am sold on the versatility but my feet wander off fore-aft on the pedals so I would like some kind of sawed-off toe clips that I can push my shoes' toebox against so my feet stay relatively in the same position. 2. I'm also fine with loose, comfortable clothing as long as my lower apparel are relatively slim-fit so they don't snag everywhere when I mount/dismount. 3. I'm generally fine with both rim amd disc brakes but I like the idea of not wearing out a structural, safety-critical component for braking. That way, I won't have to rebuild a wheel everytime my brake tracks get worn out. I also find the braking power of hydraulics to be excessive imo, so cable discs all the way for me. 4. I find that indexed-shifting is a worriless way to indicate gear shifts but being an avid bike mechanic, I realize that the thing that indexed shifters lack is an integrated "overshooting" compensation mechanism so that gear shifts is as foolproof as with friction shifting. If I have the time, I'll try modifying an indexed shifter to incorporate such a mechanism and I'll let you know on the results.

One of your best videos Russ! Tell it like it should be told brother. I have some crank brothers stamp composite pedals on one bike and I’ve never seen a set of flat pedals stick to my feet the way these things do. You can’t even tell if your clipped in half the time. They are extra large for my size 12 shoes. And one bike has a friction downtube shifter for a 1x10 set up. Thanks for this video

Right with you on all of this! My last tour was in Taiwan in November 2019. I wore a short-sleeve button-front outdoor shirt, zip-off shorts and Chaco sandals on flat pedals the whole time. Worked great for me! What is your take on 9-speed+ chains for strength and longevity? They seem sort-lived to me - especially in gritty/grungy conditions where one can't swap it out for cleaning and re-lubing every night.

Props for using cable brakes! If they're set up correctly, they're just as good as any hydro brakes I've ridden. Also: the rim provides a larger surface area to cool the brakes. Friction shifting is dope, too. It's easy enough to get in and out of gear without complexity. Back in the day there was Browning Automatic shifting. Even then it seemed ridiculous.

I agree with every one of these points! I'll add one more.....a Nike, Under Armor or similar golf polo in a bright fluorescent color works well for a bicycling shirt. Dries fast, warm and cool and very visible. Much more visible than the usual racing jersey. I ride with basketball shorts and a chamois underliner. No problems at all. You don't have to wear bike racing uniform to get on a bike. I will say......I prefer the extra power I get from Shimano PD pedals on a long ride. But my pedals are the flats on one side and cleats on the other.

I've switched my bar end shifters to fiction so I don't have to fiddle with indexing but I do have to listen to make sure they are right in gear. Once, when using flat pedals with those little "spikes" for shoe grip, going up a steep hill, pushing hard, my foot slipped and I sliced my calf to the bone, cleats are the only way I'll ride now.

Thanks for sharing. I have never thought about my choices in these terms. I don't care what people think. My choices are personal, not fashion based. For me, bike shoes are a must on account of having had my arches ache so much that I couldn’t walk normal after a ride. Hydro brakes are a must on account of hand pain from the braking. I am in SoCal with a TI hardtail. Yes, cable is likely more reliable in the long run. Though on the trails, I have had to stop on down hills much more often with cable brakes to give my hands a respite than I do with hydraulic brakes. On the commuter bike, rim brakes work fine, though not a fan of the rims wearing though and taco-ing. My rule is - Keep it simple. If it works you, ride it. Adjust as necessary!

Good stuff, as usual. The only gripe I would have is over the friction shifter. But I ride where there’s a lot of short, steep climbs, and then short descents so there’s a lot of shifting. Totally agree on everything else, though. I love your approach to biking.
@wturber
@wturber 2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with the ethos of riding and equipping your bicycle to suit your preferences and not to feel compelled to be in step with the current fashion. That said, I definitely prefer index shifting for the rear derailler. I'm fine with friction for the front since I change it so much less often. Right now I run MicroShift thumb shifters. They are index capable, but you can immediately switch them to friction in case something gets screwed up - like a bent derailler hanger. Best of both worlds. As for cable brakes, I'm all in for non-competitive cycling - especially preferring V-brakes for their ease of setup and configuration and their general effectiveness. That said, I have over 12,000 miles on my 80+ pound ebike using cable disc brakes. My average speeds are much higher on the ebike. The bike is heavier. And I'm often carrying many pounds of cargo (groceries, etc.). But plain ol' Shimano cable disc brakes stop me fine.

Russ - also Fly shirts have vents !! I wear alot of fishing shirts in the summer - they are super light and cool. We wear crocs (birth control). I also am old enough to remember that friction shifting (on the stem) was the only choice. Once you're dialed in, nbd. As an old geezer (and a technologist) I'm coming to realize that technology for technogy's sake is just a ruse to move more product. Bike industry is about the worst on this. Biking is about digging hard on the hills and enjoying the flight down - feeling the sweat on your back, and the wind in your face. Many ways to get there from here....

This is great. I totally agree. I don't bike in Crocs, but good sandals are great in hot weather. I still prefer a helmet, but a floppy or baseball hat lives in my basket, especially in the summer. Friction shifting - yeah! (Although I can appreciate a well done but simple index shift). Rim brakes - absolutely. Yes, my disc brakes might feel slightly more powerful, but I find rim brakes modulate better, are cheaper, and way easier to adjust on the fly. Disc brakes drive me insane with how fiddly they are. And shirts? Whatever works. I can't stand the thought of skin tight lycra on a hot summer day. I subscribe mostly to the Grant Petersen philosophy of biking most of the time. Sure you need some choice cycling specific gear, but once you get too specialized, it's not practical anymore.

I'm of the "If you like it, I love it" philosophy when it comes to cycling. I don't care about anything but the enjoyment of the ride. If you enjoy it differently than me, great! What I don't like are the bike snobs that literally won't talk with someone if they don't have all the perfect kit on the bike and their body. We have WAY too many bike snobs in my area and since I don't enjoy things their way, they don't talk to me. Guess I'm better off? Love my flats (look trail grip pedals), miss my old friction shifters. As a big guy, lycra isn't always my friend, so I wear as many "whatevers" on my upper body as I need/have, but do wear padded cycling lowers (shorts or tights). I like my new bike's hydraulic brakes, but miss the easier maint on rim brakes. And never a fan of Crocs ... but am warming up to the idea of Keens for my coastal lifestyle (beaches!). 67yo, returned to cycling a few years back after decades away (life, career, etc.). During the height of the pandemic, downsized out of my long-term home and found myself selling my beloved 1980s Fuji Touring Series IV - with rim brakes and friction shifters (bar-ends). Had to explain both to the young guy who bought the bike.

As a cyclist for many years, almost always getting the "best" (I was the 3rd person on Long Island, NY with a hard shell helmet, the first with the first bicycle computer (a big ol' wired thing that only showed speed and distance on a tiny LCD screen) and the first with a not strictly for cycling GPS) I found your video thought worthy. As I was watching it my mind was playing the advantage/disadvantage game at high speed, with no clear conclusions drawn and that was what surprised me. The clogs hit hard against my concerns about slipping while applying lots of power or too much flex losing the energy needed for forward motion, etc. But, if I'm going to tour, are those things as important as I think they are? The shirt left me wondering about being seen by vehicle drivers, even though I have daytime running lights. But I was also concerned about hot days and the coolness afforded by quick drying jersey with rear pockets that don't weight down the front of me. But "normal" shirts don't look as foreign to the foreigners I may meet. Or do they? There were other, similar, thoughts and, after all was viewed and (now) said, I'm staying with what I have (bringing light weight, comfortable shoes when it's time to wear them). Thanks though.

Although I don't have fly fishing shirts, I have a selection of baggy microfiber short sleeve button-up shirts that are so much more comfortable than cycling jerseys on muggy summer days. I'm currently sporting a set of barend diacompe silver shifters on my commute bike and have no problem managing a 10 speed cassette. Oh yeah, and an old set of v-brakes on that bike also. If hydraulic brakes are available I will select the bike with hydraulic brakes, too many times I have had people do dumb things during my commute to work; the added control while reaching for the brake levers was appreciated. Don't get me wrong, all other brakes are wonderful at slowing me down but only because I factor the stopping and control into how fast I ride a given trail or road.

I'm with you on friction shifting. I haven't used bar end shifters before, but grew up with downtube shifters, and turned off the first generation indexing options. So easy to fine tune as you go. NOT with you on brakes. The hills round me are serious, and each downhill ends with a sharp bend OR a gravel strewn bend, or tractor junctions. I really want a steel bike, and might go with a Genesis Croix de Fer - any opinions on that UK brand? I'm happy to change everything - just wondered what you think of the frames. One semi serious question - you seem so right on with the nature / supple life. Have you ever considered vegetarianism? Not joking, it seems that it would fit you to a T.

Long time watcher, first time commenter, Russ. Thanks for your videos, I enjoy them and you are a cut above all the rest. Have been a similar us/them struggle with gravel in the midwest (I have been a road/mtb cyclist for 25yrs+). What I'm seeing is a sort of "rift" similar to Ameican political duality in cycling. We wear loose shirts, you wear tight shirts- you clip in, we don't. Blah blah blah. The rift is there in mtb, too. Oh, we're cool, because we wear this and not that, do big jumps vs trying to go fast UP and DOWN, vs just down. I know the point of your video is sh^%s and giggles, but really- we all love to ride bicycles, and this is all marketing driven so we can join our respective clans, and decide who is hipper. Truth is, I really have the most fun putting on tight clothing, and trying to improve my endurance, speed, and skills. I'll stop at that beautiful river, skin a fish with you, and share a cold one, and sing acoustic guitar sing-a-longs all day. How we look and where we choose to ride our bikes is secondary to the common thread of propelling a wheeled machine by human power. It can get you from A to B, get you to the fishing hole, take you to the top of the mountain, or the podium. All the same, and we should be one big loving family, because we have power to change the world together! Cheers, Russ. Keep up the good work. Btw, love rim brakes, and steel- but for those that want high $, high complexity rigs, thanks for keeping the bike industry going. ;)

I used to be a, "serious cyclist." I used to race on the road and the track. Now that I don't race anymore, I have gradually grown away from, "serious," cycling wear and more toward things that are not only comfortable to ride in, but also versatile in that they look and work good off of the bike too. I don't remember which one, but I read in a cycling magazine about 20 years ago that there is an inverse relationship between how far you are from a bicycle and how cool you look in cycling sunglasses. I think that applies to any kind of cycling clothing specifically designed for the sport, but most certainly to anything that a racer wears. People who ride their bicycles across a continent wearing cargo shorts, a t-shirt and a pair of New Balance trail runners are valid bicycle riders, and they won't look like a dork while picking up some hamburger buns at the grocery store along the way. Oh yeah, they can comfortably get off of their bike and go for a hike, if they see something that looks good. Try doing that in a pair of dedicated cycling shoes.

Bottom line, be comfortable and do what is right for you. You’ll enjoy your cycling experience more. I don’t race but I enjoy long rides so I take what I like from the “serious” cyclist when I feel it works but I don’t need the latest tech or being “aero”.

I have cable disk breaks and never and will never own a hydro break system. I hate hydraulic breaks because the 3 bikes I road that had hydro I ended up stranded because a hose broken, a air bubble in the line or slow leak. With cables I can just redo a cable with little to no special tools.

I think I tick every box on this video: I ride in whatever shoes I want (whatever is comfortable). I do NOT use clipless pedals (never have); I use BMX platforms. Incidentally, I've NEVER worn lycra or a cycling jersey, and wouldn't be caught dead in that silly astronaut gear. I bike in whatever I happen to be wearing (and have done long 80 mile plus rides at intense pace) in whatever clothes I happened to be wearing. I use cantilever brakes on my 93 Trek 520. I also use friction shifting (for 8 speed cassette) and love it. I've never raced, and never plan to race. Most people who ride bikes have never raced, and never will race. It's kind of silly how cycling culture is obsessed with stuff that really only matters for racers. Most of us are riding to get around, to see things, to get some exercise, to have fun, and so on. The idea of changing into a special outfit and changing my shoes just so I can ride is like... just ridiculous to me. But each to their own. I guess at the end of the day, if you are riding a bike, you are doing great.

I ride in whatever shoes I'm wearing which also includes cowboy roper boots. Usually in boots in winter and I just don't care what others think.

As a 'serious cyclist' who moonlights every now and then as more casual rider, I am 100% behind cable actuated discs. Being an avid home mechanic (or bodger) hydraulics are too much faff.

I have no problem with crocs for cycling. I just don't recommend open shoes(exposes your toes) or flipflops for cycling because of the risk of your toes being injured during accidents. Wear anything comfortable for you just consider safety. Ride safe.

Crocs grab on to flat peddles really, really well. Friction shifting however, nope. Hydro brakes are nice, so long as you have flat bars a good set is cheaper than a better performing cable actuated caliper.

I really don't understand why we are making faction camps in cycling. It's a bike. The many levels of cycling require different kits. It's why I don't wear a helmet and fire suit when I drive my car to work. For all the people on their $15,000 pinarello's with the crazy to kit to boot, probably have an old CCM that they take to get groceries and go to garage sales while wearing cargo shorts. And maybe even crocs.

No hate here, great video and the biggest point to the whole video is you do you, it is your riding experience and don't worry what anybody else thinks. Not a crock fan in general so I wouldn't ride with them, I like the idea of riding with a columbia shirt because I am a big guy so kudos there, absolutly nothing wrong with rim brakes period, only the cycling snobs turn their noses up at them. I do prefer my hyd. disc on my mountain bike for the quick stopping power. As far as shifters go personally I like the indexed click shift when adjusted properly which is easy to do. I use clipless for my road bike but flat pedals for my mountain bike and may switch back over to flat pedals for road.

Totally agree on the brakes. Totally disagree on the clip-less. The first time I ever used them years age, I averaged 1 mph faster on a 16 mile off-road loop. I've put them on all my bikes ever since.

OMG...actually there's someone who does the same thing as I do! I hate cleats , I hate indexed shifting, I hate Lycra and I hate full hydro brakes that easily brake fades! Rim brakes are totally awesome for leisure riding, I hope more people could realize that! Cleats - this killed a cyclist last May 19th, 2022 in our locale...had he used a pair of flat pedals, he would've been still alive...he died a gruesome death because of it - ran over by a truck because he had some minor steering problems and crashed...had he used flats, then it would've been avoided...if you're not a pro cyclist, sheesh, why bother using them?

I only hated the rim brakes. I'm a bike commuter so most of the things I don't care about that much (or at all). But I do care about rim brakes. The issue with them is that once they get wet they become very noisy and I don't like that. I'd much rather have disc brakes that don't make that noise no matter if it's rain or snow.
