I've seen Journey countless times since 1981, but will always regret not seeing them on their 1980 Departure tour with Gregg Rolie on keys and vocals. In my humble opinion, the 1978-1980 version of Journey (Perry, Schon, Valory, Rolie, Smith) was the best.

If only these early live versions from 1978-80 had the audio to encapsulate the voice of Steve Perry. I am grateful these recordings exist in the archives of Journey's history. But I want clear audio so badly. Singing Rock n' Roll and touring is a grind on the voice of any singer. Steve Perry sounded great for a long time but these early recordings give glimpses into his younger voice and arrangements that were unique to the timeframe. I also love the 1978 live performance of 'Patiently' at the Capitol Theatre. It's just shy of 10 minutes long.
