I worked in EB Games just when the PS1 was being launched, and there was a huge push to shift the 3DO before it launched as they knew the writing was on the wall when it did. So there was a marketing campaign called "Don't Buy a Dodo, Buy 3DO" We used to find it funny to stickers over the "Don't" part 😂

The 80’s and 90’s, what a time to be alive. To live through the golden age of console gaming was an absolute blast. The 3DO FZ-10 was one of my all-time favorites, not to mention Samurai Shodown and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo were still relevant fighters when they were released. I can't even count how many times I had sleepovers just to play fighters all night with friends. I can still feel the excitement. Those years are highly missed.

3DO was in the main ruined by their 'engineers'. I had a first gen devkit on my desk, running at 12.5Mhz. The final system was specced to run a 25Mhz ARM, but several months into working on it they informed all developers it would be limited to 12.5Mhz "because it is not possible to run the ARM at 25Mhz". Completely wrong of course, I'd had a 25Mhz ARM 3 running in a Acorn Achimedes for well over a year by then. They were also extremely cagey about exposing their SWI calls to those of us writing in assembler, insisting everything be done through their libraries. Quite liked the Maria sprite system though, rather than simply stretch the sprite it would work out the on screen points of the source pixels, and fill between them, which made some very interesting effects possible.

Ive only heard dev stories about doom as far as the 3DO is concered, would love to know more, having the 3DO as a teen about the same time I saw code for the first time.

The idea of not being just a videogame was also bad. How could they think competing with PCs in this area was possible? If only VideoCD was available without an expansion, they could try to benefit from that, the same way PS2 did with DVD.

@@dtbjason think what would happen if nintendo provided an early dev-kit and specs to developers (as they did) and then downgraded the specs and hid half the required documentation from the developers, even in the case of SWI calls claiming no such things existed (think 68000 and trap calls). Half the time I was convinced their support had no concept of their hardware.

It's an interesting console and unfortunately it didn't have time to get more support, it would have been nice if this, the Jaguar and 32X had been supported for a few more years, respecting consumers that chose these instead of waiting for the true 32-bit era to begin. Like you say, it still managed to receive a fair amount of quality titles. Most were ported to later consoles, but the originals usually look better on the 3DO, although they usually run slower too. It's impressive how FMVs look smoother than the Saturn or PS most of the time, and digitized images look great too.

The M2 may be the biggest "what if" in video games. I remember reading the video game mags back in the day and again recently thanks to Retromags and the specs were going to completely blow away other systems at the time. Of course specs don't mean anything if the software sucks, but we'll never know.

Burger Becky even put a cheat code into the 3DO port of Doom to take advantage of the M2's extra grunt, but that never came to pass. You can overclock the game via emulation to get an idea of how it might have run on the M2.

I remember seeing Need for Speed for the first time on the 3DO. If my memory is correct, the presentation is actually a little better than the PS1 version in the menus and FMV clips.

The 3DO had a lot going for it when it was first announced. Unfortunately, the price killed it for a teenager like me. One other knock against it for me was many of the games you mentioned like Myst, Another World, Alone in the Dark, Wolfenstein 3D, Lemmings, and Wing Commander 3 were all on the PC first and my family had a decent CD-ROM equipped PC at the time. By the time the price of the 3DO came down enough for it to be truly competitive the PS1 was on the market with better hardware specs, the financial backing of Sony and a tidal wave of 3rd party support. The REAL tragedy of the 3DO is Trip Hawkins leaving EA in the early 90s to form the 3DO Company. Sure EA ended up getting huge after Trip left but w/o him they grew into 800 lb gorilla of a corporation that people loathe and hate. With Trip EA was a scrappy innovative developer who like you said used to treat their game designers like rock stars.

I remember the trick on the PS1 of starting a game with a paperclip in the switch, CD door open, until the load screen and then swapping out a burned copy. I played the Japanese Ridge Racer this way.

Those machines were invincible, my ps1 had drinks dumped on it, weights dropped on it, girlfriend knocking it down and it survived for like ten years worth of moves. A true beast and my ps2 used to travel with me when I was working in rig camps, they sure don't build them like that anymore.

Bust a move got me thru 3 years of Harvard. It was in my rooming house in the laundry room In the basement. When the worker would need quarters he would empty the game and it was always super full to add to the laundry quarters. People use to do the reading on it while they played. Fifteen years after graduating at the reunion it was still in the basement. Love those neo geo dual cabs

Wow, 40 minutes of 3DO. What did we do to deserve all this, Patman? I didn't get mine till some years later (and for next to nothing) in '99. I actually really liked both of the AD&D games, Guardian War, and it has my personal favorite version of Out of This World on it. It's no Playstation, but I feel it gets lumped in with the CD-I, and it was much better than that.

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I think a lot of it has to do with the initial price point of the system...BUT, look how expensive the PS3 was when it first came out. Nobody talks crap about it. It was right on the cusp of the change over to 32 bit architecture, so yeah, a lot of the early games were going to be clunky and ugly. Just like a lot of early PS1 games were. That insane price just killed any chance it had at success, though, as they didn't have the concept of also having it in arcades like the Neo-Geo did. I'll always enjoy tossing in Guardian War or Gex and playing a bit on mine.

I can remember the Need for Speed tagline "cars drive like they should, so you can drive them like you shouldn't" I spent the entire time in the game doing burnouts for the entire length of the track. I still have my FZ-10 and it still works to this day. Bought it on layaway from Walmart for $199. The best part about it was that it effectively died a few months later so all the games were on clearance everywhere. Grabbed just about everything that was out at the time. We even had a couple liquidators come through and they all had 3D0 games for $5! Again, I bought everything!

Having the pack-in game be called Crash 'n Burn seems kind of prophetic. I had read about the 3DO in magazines and I once saw one at a local Radio Shack, with the T-Rex chase portion of Jurassic Park on it, but never knew anyone who had one or saw any advertising for it. I have to say that after trying many of the games through emulation, I'm really not that impressed by it. I like Crash 'n Burn, but many of the other games have a kind of unfinished, beta feel to them. Of the games I tried that were available for both the 3DO and the PS1, I usually liked the PS1 versions better. The 2D games were fine, but with a console like this, you want it for its 3D power and many of those games tended to look kind of rough, even considering the time of its release.

We owned a Goldstar 3DO, back in the day. We bought it from Costco (remember when it used to sell consoles?). There were a few games that required you to switch discs (Daedalus Encounter). "You found a key! Insert disc 2. You used the key on a door! Insert disc 3. You opened the door! Insert disc 4..."

I never knew this system existed until I was watching Nostalgia nerd talk about this system when he was reviewing an Atari Jaguar, which I never knew existed either lol. Had to be shopping video game stores, eb games, software etc, Babbage, it was like 700 bucks at launch. Dropped to 400 bucjs then 300plus most of its short life. Right before ps1 came out it dropped to around 200, it was at Walmart and most other stores, ps1 cane out crushed it, so in most consumers minds it was out a year, but in reality around 5 yr's.

Great video as always. Two things: I loved Return Fire as well on the 3D0, it was a top-down wargame where you drove a tank and other military vehicles around just blowing stuff up to classical music (for those who don't know about it, I'm sure you did), and Way of the Warrior had one redeeming quality and that was the soundtrack was all tracks from White Zombie's "La Sexorcisto" album. The Dragon's Lair conversion was impeccable and Total Eclipse was a real blast. I rented that system so many times.

Goldstar 3D0, I Remember they were doing that with other builds sourcing like CD-i and Magnavox or Philips, even Sega JVC had a fling. It's a really interesting idea on paper so to speak. I think it's pretty difficult to sell a home system for 600 to 800 dollars when Sega Saturn, Sony Playstation were just about to be released. Most of the people wanted to spend that money on 3D0 might as well just get a Personal Computer.

Yeah the business model wasn't bad, and the hardware wasn't bad, but those two things didn't work well together. The bleeding edge tech (for the time) meant it was expensive to produce, and since the manufacturers didn't get a cut of game sales, they had to sell the hardware for a high price to make a profit. I've often wondered if the system would have succeeded if it were put out exclusively by a big electronics manufacturer and sold at a loss like most consoles, or if the business model would have succeeded if it were applied to innovative but low-cost hardware like the Nintendo Wii (which was very cheap to produce since it wasn't trying to be a graphical powerhouse).

I bought 3D0 upon release at Macy’s for $700. Loved World Interceptor, Road Rash, Crash and Burn and especially Monster Manor. Along with my Neo Geo AES in 1993 my gaming needs were met.

Thanks for the video.. I was in the $700 club and had an early unit. I am a sports gamer so I had to get the system for Madden, slam N jam basketball and foes of Ali… all with mixed results. The load times in this thing killed me !

Great video. Glad it appeared in my feed, took me back to a better time and brought back a lot of great memories as well. I always wanted an FZ-1 Panasonic model 3DO when it was originally released in 1993 but as with most other people, it was way too expensive for our household and me being only 13 or 14yo at the time of launch in 1993, I hadn't acquired my first job yet. When the system was officially discontinued in 1996, I had my first job and was finally able to pick up an FZ-10 Panasonic 3DO model from Best Buy for only $100...happy days back then. I then went across the street to Circuit City and picked up 5 or 6 games at also ridiculously low, discontinued pricing. I played the hell out of that system until it finally died in 2000, or maybe even 2001. It had so many great games, always hated that it didn't last longer and did better sales wise but the ridiculous, original cost of it doomed it from the beginning, just like the SNK Neo Geo doomed its system as well. Such a great time back then, wish I could go back. Lol.

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I was surprised as well because it had a high amount of playtime on it, and it also had been unplugged and taken with me to friends houses and family get togethers as well. Apparently, I got lucky and had gotten ahold of a great built system. I didn't know anyone else that had ever had one at the time, so I never knew how long they would typically last. It was well cared for, but also highly played with as well. I never replaced it, even though I always wanted to, due to the high and entirely too much asking prices on eBay and Amazon, even for a used system. The cost of a used one now is even worse, so I'll probably never own one again...unless I get lucky at some point. Lol. Thanks again for the video, and take care.

Ginger Lynn (also in WC4) was working at a SIGGRAPH convention in New Orleans some years after WC4 and I got to talk to her. She said that a sequel to WC4 starring herself and Mark H. was in the works, though obviously that version ultimately didn't happen. Ginger was appearing to promote a 3D software mapping app that came with a 3D model of her body.

The game was still in the early beta stage of development and no enemies were added yet. I was convinced this was going to be the next generation until they announced the price…

Much like the Neo Geo, the 3DO was a system that I salivated over but could not afford. As mentioned in the video, I ended up playing classics like Road Rash and D on the much more affordable PS1.

@@daerth4423 It's pretty telling that Neo Geo games from 30 years ago hold up so well to this day. Last summer I bought Baseball Stars 2 for $8 on PSN and got far more enjoyment from it than the bulk of new releases.

I was maybe 15, when I got a summer job at a nursing home. It seemed like the longest summer ever, saving up for the 3DO. My favorite game for the system was Hell a cyberpunk thriller.

I had a Panasonic one and loved the heck out of that system. Wing Commander 3, Return Fire, Cannon Fodder. I wished I got Star Control 2, Road Rash, or Samurai Showdown. Did enjoy Crash n Burn and Total Eclipse and Shockwave. But my best memories was passing the controller around with my family as we played Pebble Beach or teasing my siblings as I beat them in Madden. I miss that system.

How did you miss the turbo Duo? It never really stood a chance in the States but they at least gave it a try. When it came out it came with five games or so. Not that it ever stood a chance.

Your opening up old wounds....I sold a few rare sports cards to buy this system at launch. I believe I had Madden, Alone in the dark, Way of the warrior, wing commander 2 , out of this world and road rash. Wing Commander and Road rash were amazing, everything else.... not so much. But I did enjoy just popping in a music CD and watching the colors swirl on the TV to the music.

I miss the 90s. Such a great time to be a gamer. My cousins had a 3DO and would constantly dunk on me for having a SNES. Everytime I went to their house I wanted to play it. They were over it about 3 months after getting it and wouldn't even break it out when I went over after awhile.

I still remember being a kid, going into Macy's store, and seeing the 3DO for the first time, at the unbelievable price of $699.99, full price. I thought, no way is this thing going to do well at that price. Too expensive, but a clever idea.

I was a kid when the 3DO released, so naturally I was much more interested in its more mainstream (and cheaper) contemporaries. For the longest time I had always written off the games for the console as basically shovelware, but I recently played the Saturn port of Sword & Sorcery (Lucienne's Quest in English), and I was shocked by how charming and fun it was (despite its many, many flaws). Granted, it's a bit different in its presentation on the Saturn, but knowing that it originated on the 3DO got me interested. The Ur-Quan Masters is another game I enjoyed that I was surprised to find got a lot of love from its developers on the 3DO.

D I definitely remember we had for 3DO before the PSX/Saturn versions. very interesting concept for the time. we also had Super SF2 TURBO! kind of a pain to play on a stock 3DO pad, but we did have the soldier pad. and yeah the new remixes were good stuff!! The Need For Speed, my dad was ALL about that one! my favorite part had to be the jerk opponent who always taunted you in the cutscenes, and the actual digitized interiors that were modeled after each car! same for Road Rash! aside from the fact the licensed tracks only played in the menus, but another rare fun one on 3DO! Gex I kinda enjoyed, actually.

At the time, game licenses were reported to be $13 for SEGA, $10 for SONY, and a whopping $15 for NINTENDO. And the ATARI Jaguar was rumored to be even more ridiculous. Many of us thought that the 3DO was going to be the next big thing, a no compromises 3D powerhouse that everyone would have. Then we saw the price tag and asked, "What the hell were they thinking?"

No kidding. I had a friend who was a foreign exchange student from Japan and his family was loaded. Of course he bought An important 3DO as soon as it came out along with five or six games and I was completely blown away. There is no way I was going to spend $700 Though

Killing Time had one of the BEST uses of FMV in a game, using it to tell the story as in-engine hot-spots that activate as you approach.

Fun fact: 3DO outsold the Sega CD in the U.S. and Canada several times during its life; despite how expensive it was. But a cute fact however: It's that; despite the vitriol Trip had against Nintendo for their harsh licensing policies back in the day, he does have a soft spot for Mario!

I can remember the Megadrive had the Master System converter which was really only a cartridge adapator as it had a chip on the console to play 8bit games. 3DO always seemed a bit pie in the sky and I never saw one in the wild like the Neo Geo.

My mom bought the console at a garage sale as she did every Saturday in the 80s and 90s. She would come back with all kinds of expensive things for cheap. One year, I got Jordan's 4s for $2. Always clothes and boombox. We didn't miss a beat growing g up and I'm thankful Things we couldn't afford otherwise. This particular day, she brought home a 3do with games like road rash and street fighter 2 and a couple of other games for $10. I loved road rash. It even cussed and had live video and hot girls; I was probably 14, 94-95...Thanks mom 🙂
