I loved the COPS line as a kid and I wrote Hasbro asking them to produce the women of the series. I loved Nightshade and Mirage and would have picked up a Ms. Demeanor as well.

In the first issue of the C.O.P.S. comic, we learn that Big Boss blames Bulletproof for the imprisonment and death of his identical twin brother, so he has Rock Crusher blow up the 647th Precinct with Bulletproof inside. After Bulletproof gets injured and is operated on, he decides to form the C.O.P.S. team to take the fight to Big Boss and his Crooks. You see, Bulletproof and Big Boss respectively leading their armies just to get back at one another is one big chain of revenge. In the cartoon, they made it pretty clear: Bulletproof is the good guy, and Big Boss is the bad guy. But in the comic, things are a little murky, so you really can’t blame either of them for wanting their revenge, and that’s what makes the C.O.P.S. comic worlds apart from the cartoon.

There shoulda been female C.O.P.S. figures: Mainframe, Mirage, and for the Crooks: Nightshade & Miss Demeanor
@AustinTXSlasher
@AustinTXSlasher 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's something that always threw me off about C.O.P.S. -- the lack of female characters as toys. At least GI Joe made allof their female characters into action figures. They didn't always update them as their uniforms/look changed, but at least you could find some version of the female characters.

Just think of the awesome accessory ideas they’d make for Nightshade the grappling hook need not mention but for her cap accessory they could have made an explosive attachable safe bomb and perforate the caps to tear them one by one each time you blow up the bomb

Cops kind of strikes me as a more child version of judge Dredd. I saw a few episodes as a kid and loved it's futuristic sci-fi elements. Later when I watched judge Dredd and started reading the comics I knew there were definitely similarities.

Such a great idea for a toy line, and in my opinion, executed remarkably well. Unique character designs with flourishes of their real-world analogues, robust scale with articulation comparable to Joes, sleek vehicle concepts, and accessories that actually exploded! I remember having Mace and Bowser, and I especially liked the robo-dog Blitz -- for essentially a static figure, it had decent playability with the police beacon and option to equip Bowser's gun. Wasn't aware of or remember ever seeing the 2nd wave in stores. Actually, besides the Centurions influence you mentioned, I also spotted some shades of Spiral Zone, particularly in Checkpoint. I don't know how hard it is to find Spiral Zone merchandise, but I recently watch the first half-dozen episodes and was really impressed by how mature and well developed it was. Maybe that's why it didn't succeed as a kid's show? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on that property. As always, great job documenting this stuff. It may look effortless from the perspective of a casual viewer, but it's clear to me how much care and work you put into everything you do -- from technical stuff like lighting, to research, to editing, to scripting, to presentation. Just awesome work.
@MichaelMercy
@MichaelMercy 6 жыл бұрын
Yup they're really nice looking toys in hand. Great sculpts perfect paint and great articulation. Basically just bigger, more detailed GI Joes. I'm not familiar with Spiral Zone at all...I have no idea how I missed it! Looks pretty cool from a quick Google search. I'll have to look into it, thanks for the suggestion! I see a definitely resemblance for Checkpoint to Col. Dirk Courage (great name). :D

I thought switching Buttons McBoom-Boom would fit in perfectly with the Headman ,and his Headhunters. Just swap Buttons' purple ,black pin stripe suit, with black and yellow pin stripes. When I first saw the book, it seemed like the C.O.P.S. toyline was inspired by ROBOCOP which came out the year before.

Given that Hasbro included one female G.I. Joe figure per year in that line up until 1987, I'm pretty sure that they had ample data to show that female characters didn't sell well enough to justify inclusion in the C.O.P.S. line, considering their larger size and higher price-point. 🤔

'Another extraordinary video, Mr. Mercy! (Actually, this is on par with your others, and thus not out of the ordinary for you to produce such fine work. I digress...) Just as Marvel's G.I. Joe comic was more "mature" than the Sunbow cartoon, DC's C.O.P.S. comic was more "mature" than it's animated counterpart. (Well, to some extent, anyway....) One intriguing story arc in the DC book that captivated me as a child involved a rogue officer who outright rebelled against Vess and company's protocol by-the-book brand of justice, and decided that terrorizing crooks and trampling them with a robotic monolithic pachyderm yeilded better results in the war on crime. The story premise alone was fantastic, but the true hook for me was based on a personal misconception: The rogue C.O.P.(s member)... I initially thought that it was Highway!! 'Definitely bore a resemblence to him... Once I discovered that it was actually a character designed solely for this storyline, I only experienced mild disappointment. It was still a highlight of an overall underrated DC series.
