Patriarch Grove in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest off Highway 395

The Patriarch Grove in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is home to the largest Bristlecone Pine in the world. This grove is accessed via a 13 mile dirt road that takes you up to 11,000 feet in the White Mountains. It is a fantastic adventure and one that I always enjoy. I made it in my commuter skate civic over the summer. 4x4 guys looked at me like I'm crazy, yeahhh a little bit. The Michelin defender tires that I run hold up good even on gravel roads.

Several years ago (2014), I made the drive to the Patriarch Grove in a rental minivan. I don't remember the road being too bad, but perhaps it has deteriorated since then. It was an amazing place to visit!

I love the Bristlecone Pines. I haven't been there in over 40 years. Tried to take my grand children but they got bored before we got to them. Have been to both these and the ones in the Great Basin. They are truly amazing

Great video. There is also a Bristlecone pine forest at Great Basin NP in Nevada - they are truly unique trees, nothing quite like them.

Absolutely spectacular!! Being able to visit the tallest trees on the planet, the largest trees on the planet ... AND the oldest trees on the planet ... all in Northern California is soooooo great! We are fortunate to live in this incredible state!!

I visited the bristlecones in Nevada as well, that was a great hike! The terrain pretty much looks the same, other than there being a large rock in the background, Wheeler Peak. I haven’t been to the Patriarch Grove, just the Schulmann Grove, and that was pretty wonderful! That long drive to Patriarch tends to hold me back! Thank you Josh and Dad, I really enjoy your wholesome videos!

Great video, love the trees AND the white Dolomite rocks.. I was just up there last week did the hugs from Sherman Grove but for some reason, missed the Patriarch drove (the Shulman grove visitor’s center was closed.) Will be back in September

There is something beyond profound to see a tree that was living on that promontory 4,852 years ago, which means it was growing there before mankind invented the 365 day calendar. Hope people heed your caution about needing high-profile vehicles. That 13-mile drive is crazy jaw rattling. Worth the effort, without a doubt.

I did take that road in a relatively normal sedan. We survived, but yeah, not recommended :) Took some of my favorite photos up there.

I could probably still do both trails, but it'd be a "no go" for my wife. She's never been able to handle altitude. She even had a hard time in Yellowstone at Mammoth Hot Springs which is just over 6700'.

Did this in 94. It hasn't changed! Thought you would have mentioned that the oldest trees are 3 - 4000 + yrs. The oldest dead wood has been measured at 7000 yrs old.

The pines and landscape don't look particularly beautiful to me.. but I really shouldn't say anything until I visit; it seems like a place where time just stands still though so that's awesome. My favorite place to visit is Tahoe national forest s as I love seeing the Ponderosa pines growing among the running streams and incredible rock formations.
