Being a chiefs fan in 2017 was a wild time. You just lost a home playoff game to a team that scored exactly zero touchdowns. I didn’t care about some kid from Whitehouse, Texas’ arm strength. I wanted the guy who had just led his team to two national title game appearances while winning the ladder one. I wanted a winner, and many guys coming out of the Big 12 hadn’t been. Especially someone with a losing record in college as a starter. Five and a half years on from the 2017 NFL Draft, I can more than confidently say that Veach made the right decision. I truly don’t care if we don’t make another super bowl in my life time. Patrick Mahomes brought so much joy to Kansas City and, personally to myself and family as well. Especially watching the game at the focal point of this video. A month before that game, I lost my father who happened to be a huge chiefs fan. He was around for Super Bowl 4 but didn’t remember it. This was the highest he had been on the Chiefs since Montana came to town, and losing him, and losing that AFC title game nearly two months later, broke me. I’m not ashamed to say I cried like a baby the night we won Super Bowl 54. That was years of pain, granted not as much as the Chiefs fan before me had suffered, but I was tired of getting to the playoffs and doing absolutely nothing. The fortunes of the Chiefs changed forever in April of 2017 and they’ll affect all Chiefs fans in a very positive way for a lifetime. Thank you Patrick Mahomes for all you do for this city, and all you mean to me

I also became a Chiefs fan that year. I was 10 years old and was beginning to realize that I loved football. No one in my family was a fan and I am from KY. At the time the Titans didn't exist so most people here were Bengals fans with a few Colts and (at the time St. Louis) Rams fans sprinkled in. I knew that I didn't want anything to do with those teams and to this day I can't tell you what made me gravitate towards KC. It was probably how striking that Chiefs red is compared to everyone else. Years later because no one likes to suffer alone I convinced my younger brother to join me. Honestly, bonding over Chiefs disappointment all those years was a huge factor in building the unusually close relationship that we have to this day. All of that made watching what 15 brought to this team even more special. Every Sunday since, there has not been a Chiefs game where one of us didn't text the other some version of "How is this guy on OUR team?" That is all for today, thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

When I was three my parents let me choose my own team to be a fan of, my dad was a Saints fan and my mom, a Vikings fan. I'm colorblind and the only color I can see clearly is Red, so I really wanted to like the chiefs. Stuck with it since 2004 and though I'm too young to know all the history I would say it's been my favorite decision in my life. Watching the heartbreak of the Alex Smith era transform into what we have now taught me a lot in life. It's a genuine pleasure to be a Chiefs fan and being one of two Chiefs fans in all of North Dakota paid off eventually! I spent my college money to go see the chiefs win the Superbowl because I had said since I was a kid that if they made it to the Superbowl I would go if I could. I sure miss the money I spent now but the experience was worth everything and more. Same could be said about life as a chief's fan! I doubt anyone will read this, but it was worth saying, a small thing for all this team has given me.

I drafted Mahomes in my 2018 fantasy football draft. I was hoping to get QB who would put up consistent average or above average numbers from week to week. I was worried when I missed out on getting Cam Newton, who was coming off an injury, as my backup QB just in case things didn't work out with Mahomes. I ended up dominating my league because Mahomes put up outrageous numbers every week. I retired from fantasy football immediately after winning my league because there was no way I was ever going to be that fortunate and derive that much joy from fantasy football ever again.

I was at this Raiders game 🤘 Been a Chiefs fan since the coach was Marty and the QB was DeBerg. Saw some playoff wins in the early years, but then KC settled into that long losing drought; no matter if they had 13+ wins or historic offenses or great defenses, it was easy to become acclimated to the expectation that the Chiefs would collapse in the post-season, and even after that win against the Texans in 2015 (which my family celebrated like it was a Super Bowl win), things went back to the normal Chiefs playoff shenanigans with the field goal game, Marcus Mariota catching his own pass, etc. Mahomes not only makes all of that a long distant memory, it's become something that I don't even associate with the Chiefs anymore. Even if, after his tenure is over, the Chiefs slip back into what they mostly had been for those decades between those classic 60s teams and Mahomes coming onto the scene, I'll be happy that I got to live to see a time like this for KC. Go Chiefs.

This. 100%. It's so common to take a look at all the 1st-round QBs 5 years later and put so many of them into the Bust Bin when really they lacked adequate leadership and support. Without Reid and Smith and all that talent surrounding him, I seriously doubt Mahomes would have even a fraction of the success he's had thus far in KC. I like to look at Josh Allen's development in Buffalo too-he wasn't good right away, but Sean McDermott clearly worked with him to play to his strengths and reduce his inaccuracy and it has paid off in the biggest of ways. Then you have somebody like a Sam Darnold who struggled for years because his coach was one of the worst in this century (and with guys like Urban Meyer and Bobby Petrino, I don't say that lightly) and because he had to start right away for a bad team in the depths of a rebuild. No draft room really ever makes bad picks outright, because there are always numbers and highlights to draw from, but you can't just leave a plant in a dry, dark room and expect it to grow.

I mean it's not huge but having all of Western Missouri, most of Kansas and a majority of residents in Omaha it's hitting over 5 million individuals in its tv market which is quite a bit bigger than places like Buffalo or Jacksonville and because of very recent success putting them more in the spotlight they have only grown since 2010.

For example: There is now a chiefs fan base in Northwest Arkansas that didn't really exist before 2010.

I am a life long Chiefs fan from So Cal. I was sitting on the goal line about 7 rows back when Robinson crossed backwards for the 50th TD.

I've been a Chiefs fan since the old AFL days. People don't realize that this is the FIRST QB the Chiefs have drafted who turned out to be a success. Every successful QB they had in their entire history was acquired by trade.

Demarcus Robinson absolutely pimping his TD running backwards into the endzone might be the best part of this moment in history. Nowhere in the rulebook does it say you can't run backwards 😂

Got to watch the Texas tech Oklahoma game. Heard of Mayfield, Perine, Mixon, Westbrook, never heard of Mahomes. Was blown away by Mahomes, was thinking if the Chiefs can draft this dude. Had a argument with a family member after the Alex Smith trade, he said the Chiefs made a mistake. I said did you not watch the Broncos game, Albert Wilson almost had 200 yards receiving that day, he never had output like that with Alex Smith. Mahomes make everybody better, I saw him battle back and forth with Oklahoma, once you see what he can do, you'll forget about Alex Smith, Mahomes is like a souped up Elway or Favre, he can make every throw on the field.

25:years! 😂 I sufferd through Cassel, Croyle, Thigpen, Palko, Huard, Quinn, and to a certain extent Green and Smith (which I'd say were our only 2 decent QBs we've had in the last 20 years!) So when I play Madden and hear ppl say "you bandwagon chiefs fan" I name all our QB's we've had (like I just did) and then say "after the QB's I've had to play with growing up (I only play with the chiefs since 04, shout out Dante Hall and my fav chief of all time Priest Holmes!) I deserve to play with Mahomes!! And they usually say "oh wow I'm sorry you had to go thru that! 😂 😂

It's wild that the only thing left to accomplish for Mahomes is stacking rings. Lotta guys never got one, let alone multiple. I've never seen ANYONE play the game like Patrick. There's a handful of guys in history that had one or two of his talents...but nobody has ever had it all. And then you think about the arm angles...improvisation...left handed...SUCCESSFUL no-look passes...curveballs cutting under a lineman's armpit...throws across his body and the field...and even his impeccably timed runs....I hope everyone can get past their own teams Fandom to appreciate what we're seeing. And how about all the other talented QBs ...Allen, Burrow, Tua, Herbert, Hurts, Lawrence, Lamar....that we will get to watch battle each other for years to come. Great time to be a football fan.

Great video! It is really funny to see all the disparaging analysis information on Mahomes now! Bret Veach should have a GM job for the Chiefs as long as he wants it. Mahomes is not just a great QB, he seems to be a really great person. His mom and dad did a helluva job raising him.

All during Smith's last year in KC, he was having his best season, we were hearing murmurs out of Chiefs practices that Mahomes was ridiculous, like so much so that when he got a chance to play, it was going to be all over for Smith. Then that Denver game, Mahomes made at least 4 'franchise' throws, which was about as many as Smith had made his entire best season of his career. Then that ugly playoff loss. Then the trade. Then we went out and got Watkins. Right after we got Sammy, I built a bandwagon and started telling everyone what was about to hit the NFL. I like to think that Nick Wright is the only other guy that openly predicted what was about to happen, but I know there were plenty others. I like that Patrick is willing to structure his contract so that he has a team to play with out there. He is as close to perfect for Kansas City and the fans of this franchise as any player ever has been.

Only real Chiefs fans remember the grinding days of Trent Green, Tong G, Tamba Hali ect. those teams always were a piece or 2 away and having to play a stacked AFC with Brady, Mannning ect. It felt so good to finally be able to see us actually contend and win a freaking playoff game finally lol. What Mahommes brings is so appreciated because Chiefs fans deserve it, we had been disrespected for years and now we have the juice and are the team to beat.
