This is a chunk of archival gold from British television, circa 1979. As part of an "in-studio master class" on speaking Shakespeare, Patrick Stewart and Trevor Nunn talk about how the same role (Enobarbus in Antony & Cleopatra) was interpreted differently by Mr Stewart five years after his first crack at it.

You know, we are all saying Pat Stew was always old...but check out the energy and focus when he starts to speak, and especially at the 5:00 mark. There is such a fresh and youthful excitement that belays the graying, balding head and salt/pepper beard. Also: Pat Stew always had a really lovely complexion but even in this non flattering lighting he has a glowing, perfect complexion.

Wow. I'm playing Enobarbus and just happened to come across this searching him. I never anticipated being called back in for Enobarbus, thinking I am too young for the character. So it's....interesting.....to see Mr. Stewart played him at basically the same time of life. The points he makes about ultimately talking about acting/feeling the text and there not being ONE way into playing Shakespeare (or anything)....all the real deal; very much so. Many thanks for posting, klizuck.

The character is Gnaeus Domitius (Ah)enobarbus, the great-grandfather of Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, who took his maternal great-uncle’s name when he was adopted into the line of succession as Nero Claudius Caesar. The last three members of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty, Gaius (Caligula), Claudius and Nero were all descendants of Mark Antony and his first wife, Octavius’ (Augustus’) sister, Octavia, in a bit of historical irony.

I like him, the way he was then. This is the first time, I listen to him, when he was much younger. I think, he has changed a lot into very self-confident, meanwhile. He then was only an actor, talking about acting. Anyhow there has been more innocence in all of it. Of course I still like him very much, but he has lost something. I guess, he had more doubts then. Doubts are needed if you want to be a really good one.

We all change as we grow older. But you are right: despite the greying hair and the bald pate Pat Stew in this clip is still a very eager and very passionate stage actor , still in his 30s, still has questions.
