Raven Symone WAS the Disney Channel at one point. She dominated the early 2000s. However Disney chose what she said, how she dressed, and basically her whole personality. Her escape from the conglomeration was not perfect, but she did it.

Honestly, with how chill Raven has been compared to other Disney child stars is insane, especially with how overworked she was. What few controversies she has are pretty minor and she has been a massive influence on kids everywhere. I love how she never went overboard or did something obscene just to prove to everyone that she was different than her Disney identity. She was just herself and that worked out great

I relate to Raven so much. I was always heavy and turning to food. I lost 70 pounds and then was told it was too much and I looked bad. Then I gained weight and people kept asking “are you pregnant” or telling me I was fat. It has messed me up so much.

I would say too that Zendaya had more leverage to do a Disney Sitcom than Raven did in her time (and this entire video gives context to that). KC Undercover was kind of a like a love Letter to That's So Raven (since Raven guest starred as a form of homage) and what it represented through Raven & the work it did for the network and for culture in its own right. I also feel like Raven's Home is a nudge back to what Zendaya did fighting for KC Undercover. Raven had the means to continue on the network like Zenday did, but on her own terms in a much better, much Free-er place. The connection the two of them have is very inspiring when you think about it. They essentially have helped each other.

this is such a great video! i'm enjoying all the content you've been putting out lately and it makes me so happy to see the continuous growth. (random, but since you popped up the picture of amanda bynes, i think it would be dope if you ever to do a deep dive on her. amanda is actually a prime example of society failing someone. during the whole time, amanda consistently asked for help or alluded to needing help but it was weaved into sporadic behaviour and so people opted to make fun of it and ignore it, think britney, until it came out that she was mentally ill. i'm pretty sure amanda is a case of society pushing someone so far into their shell that i don't think we'll ever really get see amanda the way we she previously let us see her. and that's awfully sad.)

Omg. I hope nothing happened to this woman that she can not remember. Or worse she lying saying she cant remember so she never has to talk about her experiences to save face. For her and the cast. disney had a rollout system with their stars. they produced them everywhere and shoved them down our throats until they were culturally accepted. then they’d offer little to none support to the aging stars and let them go. zac and cody are great examples. disney gave them their show, ran it out, let them go, and then they had to find their own way to succeed. they wouldn’t do anything with the adult actors because the kids just wouldn’t be interested anymore.

This makes me think of the guy they had playing Peter Pan back in the day. They owned him from childhood and refused to let him play any roles the moment he became a teenager and had some acne. They even had the gall to mock the whole situation in the recent Rescue Rangers movie with the whole Peter Pan storyline which closely mirrors that of his actor, Bobby Driscoll. He died young, secluded from family and alone.

@@amberrj. i wouldn’t say they’d have to help them. i’d just say they’d take advantage of them until they were too old for the network. then, since the kids have already spent most of their life with disney and most of them not having a regular childhood experience, they don’t really know where to go from there. not knowing how to work for themselves. leading to bad things happening. orlando brown and his addiction is literally a given example of that.

I think raven, like you said managed to flee Disneys grip without a major drug addiction etc but this doesn't mean she didn't suffer the trauma. She probably struggled with an outlet and from being so sort of, unaware of who she is when she finally was able to speak her own mind she wasn't actually ready.. she just didn't know how to word things and get points across well without offending people. I believe if she had prepared with courses and classes on public speaking etc, her role on the view wouldn't have been as controversial or short lived! I'm glad she got her spin off though :)

Raven has always been someone I'd admire since I was little. At first I thought she was just a cute funny girl but she is very talented and very creative. Looking back over the years I think she is what molded my very specific taste in certain women. During her Disney years I was a typical guy and stayed away from most of her content but after Disney she became interesting to me again, actually more than ever and I can tell she was going through some personal development over the years. She may have missed a mark here and there but she never missed with me. Maybe its because I've meet people like her and its easier for me to understand where she's coming from. She has said some things that has even caused me to stop and think for a sec (not necessarily exactly what she said or how she said it but just more so putting what she said through mental scenarios and then pondering about those scenarios). She is a soul that loves to give and share, of course when she feels like it and if you're patient enough I think she would show you the real Raven. I would love to meet her someday. I don't say that for many celebrities.

To defend the black outs Raven had during performing on The Cosby Show, it makes sense for a child actor bc they the anxiety mixed with limited memory capacity for a small child could lead to memory loss. It happens to me a lot when performing music live but its more of a brown out if you will, remembering some of the set and not remembering other parts. There's just so much to accomplish while performing in any capacity that the last thing your brain will do is remember the performance 100% through.

From a young age, growing up watching Raven in the early 2000s, I’ve always loved her. Despite her now revealing how much she was controlled, she always came off as mature and self assured. It’s unfortunate that she’s made multiple controversial comments, but it didn’t deter me from being a fan because she seems like she means well. I’ve tuned into the first and second season of Raven’s Home, and it was pretty decent. I recently saw that T’Keyah Crystal Keymah, who played her mom, will be returning for a cameo on Raven’s Home, so I’ve been binging this season and I like it. This is an awesome documentary about her life! The fact that Raven developed DID from her lifestyle as a serious actress/businesswoman since a child is not a shock. She had to take on characters and other lives since a developmental stage of her life and didn’t get to control herself. Orlando Brown is also a child actor who had to do the same in his own way. Combined with the seedy industry and any personal trauma he developed from it, it’s very sad that people didn’t view him similarly to her as a reflection of what the industry does to people. While it’s great that Raven overcame her struggles, success OR non-success does not change the fact that someone is traumatized. Both Actors show both sides of the coin concerning the industry, and they have a very naturally charismatic talent that you see when you watch That’s So Raven. They play off of each other so well. I wish people would use them individually (and several other child actors) as a beacon for change for this whole Child Star Pipeline. Very capable young people are being damaged for their talents.

The problem with Raven is that she's INCREDIBLY inconsistent and an unreliable narrator. For instance, her claims of "not remembering" her time on _The Cosby Show_ are inconsistent with what she has said previously about her time on the show, where she gushes about how much fun she had and how she wishes she could return. (this was said during the CBS announcement of "Cosby" the 1996 show Bill started before people realized it WASN'T just a modern revival of his original _Cosby Show)_ Raven has a bad habit of changing up her story to match whatever narrative she's trying to sell, depending on the audience she's in front of. She has been caught in lies ON AIR and people are CONSTANTLY coming with receipts of her -lies- contradictions. (I'm SO glad you showed that clip of her *BLATANTLY LYING* about that producer's reaction when Kendall showed up during that red carpet interview) For this reason, I can't trust ANYTHING she says.

Due to her literally being given different identities to become for really long work days as a child actor while her brain was still developing. i’m sure it was made worse when a show creator make it even more confusing by her That’s So Raven identity being a character of the same name….

Fair to point out the inconsistencies, but DID is a hell of a disorder. Not being able to remember or correctly recall events can often, not only, fuck with your longterm memory, but in a few cases with 2 people I personally know, I guess it can make you feel like you need to compensate for that issue somehow. And when combined with disney channel star levels of pressure and psychological stress- whether it’s overexaggerating, lying, or dismissing certain subjects- can manifest in unhealthy ways/maladaptive coping mechanisms. But Im not an expert. Just something interesting that Ive learned about with the people I know who have been diagnosed with DID
