This whole narrative that Djokovic "wants it more" is absurd. All three of them do and they've made many sacrifices along the way to achieve. Instead the narrative should be that he's simply better than the other 2 in the game despite all their efforts. That is really it.

as a Fed fan, it’s clear that Novak is a more complete player than Rafa+Roger. Roger wasn’t quite strong enough on the backhand side while Novak’s backhand was always solid. Rafa from 2014 onwards seemed to struggle on Hard Courts and Grass with his physical game style and leave a few short balls on the forehand for big hitters to attack. Federer had the best looking game style and shots but i have to admit that Novak is an all around better player.

Sorry but on this I would have to disagree. The other two wanted it as much as Novak, but the difference is that Novak was always open about it and was able to achieve it. Ever since he was a child he’s dreamt of being #1. He is a perfectionist in every aspect of his life. From his diet, training, to the desire to learn as many different languages as possible. He’s someone who’s constantly looking to improve. What I fail to understand is why is that a bad thing? Isn’t it an awesome thing that he wants to excel and set new records? Would you criticize Usain Bolt for all the records he has broken in the world of sprinting?Why is it a bad thing that Novak wants to be the best at what he does?

Federer and Nadal wanted it a lot. Federer played until he was 40 and Nadal played with injuries. The difference is that Djokovic is willing to dedicate himself to the sport and improving himself more than the others. Federer once said that the reason he was so successful is because he liked to win where the others just hated to lose. I think it is similar here. Federer and Nadal really didn't want Djokovic to break 20 slams but they didn't have any ambition to gain more slams otherwise. Djokovic on the other hand wants to win more slams even if he has broken all the records.

I don't take Novak's desire to be the winningest player in history as a bad thing at all. I do think Nole wants the all-time records a bit more than the other "Big Two" - BUT - he's had Roger and Rafa in his sights for a long time, and as long as he's been able to use them as a metric for success, study them, and ultimately create a game plan to break them down, the road to that goal has been laid out before him whereas the other two were in more of an uncharted career territory for much longer. I fully realize that he continues to break and set new and lofty records, and while he fully deserves the fruits of his hard work, I cannot help notice that whatever he achieves, the comparison between him and the other two remains, even as he drives further into the stratosphere beyond the Swiss' and Spaniard's past glories. People say all the time that each of the "Big Three" would have won three, four, five or more slam events had the other two not been in the draw of these tournaments, and that is most likely true. However, I cannot help but thinking that without Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic would not have won even twenty majors at this time; I don't think that could be said in a vice-versa role for the two recently- or nearly-retired greats of the game.
@UlyssesVillamin
@UlyssesVillamin Жыл бұрын
With due respect, this is an inaccurate observation. Obviously, all three wants to dominate and be the GOAT. Unfortunately for RF, father time caught up to him first. I think, Nadal is one one who wants it just a tad more. Proof of this is he tried so hard the last couple of years to win as much GS as he can, even leaving his ailing wife to go to USO. Novak on the other hand, while he also wants to be the best, he didn’t go as far as sacrificing his principles, hence not taking the jab and contently accepted consequences. If he would have been so obsessed with “conquering” the GOAT status, he would have easily taken the vax; but instead, legacy on the line, he refused to do so. I think Djokovic became the GS record holder and subsequently the GOAT because of his durability. He takes very good care of his body, mind, and spirit along with his superior tennis skills.

I agree. Novak has principles. I believe Federer and Nadal want it it more, thats why Federer tried to extend his career and did verry well even in his late 30's. Novak is just slightly better than the other two and that gives him ultimantely the edge with titles head to heads and number ones.

Djokovic will probably be considered the greatest of all time. But to say that "he wants it more and has the willingness to be the best", just comes across as stupid and beneath the big 3 status. You do not win 20+ Grand Slams without being a competitive maniac. All three of them are. Since 2005 Rafa has played with a degenerate foot. Roger came back in 2017 like a rabid dog and went God-mode. They all have it, so much more that anyone else on the tour, maybe with the exception of Alcaraz. Djokovic is the youngest of the three and no longer has to face the other two. He will continue to set records, he is awesome, he is unchallenged right now. However, he does not want it more that than Federer or Nadal, give me a break.

Novak has a big personal development and whoever has ever read any psychology book, knows that if you focus on something else rather than your own self, you are in the wrong boat. Seems Patrick is trying hard to appeal to the Federer and Rafa Nadal fanbases. Pity. So many lies in this video. Who wants to win more Grand Slams? - All of them. - Rafa’s leaving his wife and playing with an injected foot, getting jabbed, etc, indicate that Rafa was more willing to sacrifice himself, his body and his principles. Who managed to win all Grand Slams either way? - Only Novak. Who loves tennis the most? - All of them. - There is zero evidence that any one of them loves tennis more than the other. Playing tennis like ballet simply means one of them just wanted to be “showy” than others. It does not make that same person who schedules an exhibition tournament during Davis Cup to be more in love. Just perhaps more ego driven. Who plays revenge tennis just to beat his opponents who are more popular? - This is a ridiculous and un-founded take probably written by Federer’s PR team. - Every athlete wants to beat every other athlete, especially if they have been beat by that athlete before. - To claim Novak became GOAT as revenge to Federer and Rafa is assume that Federer and Rafa are more than what they actually are (opponents) and is a ridiculous unfounded statement. Who is is willing to sacrifice more to win? - Rafa Nadal. He left his soon-to-give birth wife to chase the USOpen. He allowed himself to get jabbed to chase the Australian Open. He literally admitted to injecting his foot to play the Clay Season. Rafa’s obsession is far more extreme compared to Federer and Novak.

One of the big aspects is that Djokovic plays statistical tennis (which he pushed to the highest heights, and credit to him), which renders it more easy to play great on high tension points and moment, versus attacking tennis of Federer which has by definition less margin and therefore hardest to pull out in tension moments

No, if Federer had not been obsessed with being the GOAT he would have retired 3-4 years earlier. He stayed on hoping to at least stop one of the other two from winning slams (Nadal off clay) and hoping somebody else would eliminate the other guy. Also he was hoping more than one Alcaraz would appear soon enough. Nadal was hoping Djokovic would lose his dominance on grass and hard to the youngsters while he would continue winning the clay slam. That makes sense because he is the MOST dominant on his favorite surface. If you think Nadal is playing with the pain for the fun of the game you are wrong. He is playing for his legacy and they ALL are. But only Djokovic was honest about it and still only Djokovic didn't continue playing at all costs. He stuck to his principles and sacrificed a couple of slams because he refused vaccination against Covid. The other two used every opportunity and rather sacrificed their bodies or family affairs than the opportunity to win another slam. So, no, Patrick.

its kind of ironic because many years ago I thought sampras gs record was unbeatable. then there emerged federer, nadal and djokovic competing at the same time for many, many years at the highstel level. not only did each of them beat sampras record easily, they also had to face each other (and murray) during their career. it is so fascinating, because you could argue that without the others each of them could have won twice as many gs titles - but at the same time that challenge made each of them better at the game and kept them going. while I was wrong about sampras record,I highly doubt we will have a situation like this ever again.

I wonder how is Rafa’s game more hard on the body than Novak’s? I would say it’s quite the opposite. Novak’s game is the most demanding on the body with all the sliding, splitting and long rallies. I would say Rafa’s body is more prone to injuries, because he is a little bit shorter, more muscular, less flexible and his joints are more prone to get injured.

Djokovic has the fire to want all the numbers. The other two had the records, but they loved playing and competing. Roger played on the tour with kids for over 10 years, if he didn't want it he had no reason at all to do that go through back and knee surgeries in his late 30's. Being competitive at the top at the age of 39 and 40 is no joke, without being willing to sacrifice. Novak is simply more hungry for stats and numbers. Let's face it. Novak wouldn't be as dominant if it wasn't for the other setting the targets, and forcing him to improve beyond his limitations in 2010's. All kudos to him for doing so, and becoming the ultimate version of himself. Even though he now has the numbers, he is willing to sacrifice for a few more years to completely out it out of reach for anyone else, that's the hunger Patrick is trying to describe.

Nole’s diet but above all his oriental-minded training with lots of ioga and general stretching is the key to his longevity. This translates to the way he steps, slides and runs on court. He has naturalized this next-level body conciousness in his game. He knows how to avoid unnecessary impact. Nadal is the opposite in this respect. He was just there fighting dragons with his own bare hands. Not very clever, but awesome to watch.

This sounds so negative and salty. Surprising it's coming from someone like Patrick. Like it's a justification for Novak's dominance other than that of his impeccable skill. It makes Novak sound just greedy and megalomaniacal, as opposed to him being the leading athlete that he is. Several arguments disprove this statement: 1. Roger "lives" tennis - I have watched all interviews with Roger that are out there, and I don't remember any where he talks about his love for tennis, the way Novak always brings up his inner child who still feels like it's the first time on the court. Novak talks about his love for tennis as primary driver for him to keep going. Roger's game is beautiful and inspiring, but it isn't because he 'breathes' tennis, it's just an evolved elegant technique coming from remarkable natural talent and a lifetime of hard work. In the end, doesn't doing absolutely everything in your life to shape your body and skills to reach your absolute potential and longevity in a single sport - doesn't all of that "breathing" tennis? 2. Rafa is a fighter - Sure, but wait, who has all those records of match points saved and deciding sets won? You don't get as far as Novak (or Rafa and Roger) has without being as fierce of a fighter as is possible. Novak's spirit is way more inspiring. And, he was way smarter about how he took care of his body so as to have it last this long without injury. Both are equally dedicated fighters. Novak has achieved more. 3. Novak "wants it more" - No, he's just more open and realistic and open about it. It's true he's motivated by this desire to be equally liked, but that's only a small part of what drives him. Avoiding jabs and surgery as much as possible, and planning EVERYTHING around a mindful balance of private life and tennis - that's the very definition of integrity. Rafa's the one who was injecting himself with dangerous stuff just so he could play through the pain. It's incredibly salty to hear him comment how Novak is "more frustrated" about the record... Such a childish remark! The trio have graced the sport each in their own remarkable way, and that will always be the case. Novak continues to do it to incredibly inspiring levels. It takes "breathing" tennis, being a fighter and wanting someting in order to achieve that

Look... the most of times, I agree with you, but this time... It has many errors in your speech and I think it's because you (and many others) still want to "pay tribute" to Federer and Nadal... And this is, in the end, very unfair to Djokovic... because he deserves to be nominated "THE GREATEST OF ALL TIMES" just cause, IN FACT, HE IS (and for long time until now) and people refuse to just admit that it's shameful... Novak doesn't want to be better "than others". He wants to be better than HIMSELF... This turns him into an almost perfect athlete, because, when one is really unique (like he is), try to be better than himself is the key "to almost touch the perfection"... It's confused for many people, but he doesn't mind about the other players the way people think... He "studies" them, read them and try to build a estrategy to win them (using all his incredible experience). Djokovic is entirely concentrated in himself... About the "revenge": of course, if he wins in front of resentful fans of the others (that were fed by a biased media for maaaaaaaany years) that are provoking him one entire match (and this happened many times), he gets a better taste from his victory... It's a consequence from people's behave. After all, they generate this... And about"the price he pays"... To tell the truth, It's just care about, in reality, his only "tool for work": his body... Djoko did this better than anyone and he is receiving "a payment" for this (his wins)... It's not a price, It was and continues to be an investiment... Well, he wants to know himself and he does... That's why he does everything he does. Himself is the centre... But I agree about his hunger... He wants more and more and this is just... sublime to see... 👑 #GOAT

That's still the cause but there is something deeper. Novak went through an personality maturation that was ignited by being a Serbian that was under war and terror when he was a kid. He could release and elaborate all his inner stress that is a tremendous energy and that all work for him now.

Patrick provides some great videos of technical analysis but this take is complete shit. "Wants it more?"- Federer is much older and Nadals style makes him prone to injuries. Novak is the youngest and all credit to him for his fitness and he has had the best career but not because "he wants it more". If Roger and Nadal where both 30 right now and ended up with more achiement than Novak is it because they wanted it more??

Novak had 12 after winning 4 in a row in 2016. At that point we all thought he was gonna get the record. The record holder was Fed at 16 and he hadnt won a slam in 4 years. Rafa was second with 15 and hadnt won a slam in 2 years and had struggled with injuries yet again.. so much so that he withdrew from the FO in 16 and of course he was beaten by Novak in 15. Now of course, nothing is given and Novak ended up struggling with his own injuries afterwards but it seemed pretty damn plausible at the time that he would get the record.

This analysis about the mental makeup of these 3 players is spot on. When people say Đoković wants it more, it's actually a compliment, but for some reason his fans take it as a criticism. Roger is an artist that wants to entertain, Rafa is a fighter that wants to test himself to the limits, and Nole is an alpha that wants to dominate.

I do not agree. Saying that Federer loves the tennis the most.. wtf kind of subjectuve judgment is this... so funny. Fed openly says that he did not play any tennis since he retired and he just love the break from the sport (this is not me trying to make the point about Novak loving the sport the most by the way, this is just to personal and unmeasurable). Also, Fed complained how he would maybe be better if the did not have one hand backand (recent interview). All of them wanted to be the best, but at the end only one will be, and it turns out it ll be Djokovic.

I don’t like Novak, but he’s undoubtedly the best player under pressure ever..he knows when he needs to dig in and not miss and has the highest tennis IQ. That said, the margins between him and Rafa are small and no one can argue that Rafa is the best clay court player in ever. Most dominant on a single surface. What if 2/4 slams were played on clay? Nadal would have 35 slams. He’d also probably have more if he hadn’t gotten injured mid tournament on many.

John McEnroe has recently joined "Team Djokovic" in terms of his recognizing Novak as the best player ever. While I think that has to do with a kind of "flavor of the month" mentality, i.e. - who's winning the most right now, he did say something more useful than simply anointing Nole as the latest "G.O.A.T."; that Djokovic has become the "most technically proficient" player that he's ever seen. I find that statement accurate on a number of levels regarding the Serbian's winningness, statistics, training, mentality, game plan, and so on right down to his groundstrokes. Furthermore, it is an observation of what Novak has and is doing, and not necessarily comparing what Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have done in their respective careers which more than a few times have overlapped that of Djokovic.

PERIOD... Until someone starts doing records he has wiped off the face of the earth during his career, undisputed GOAT will be NOVAK and NOVAK ONLY!!!
