I got the ultra a month after its release, and have loved it since it arrived. But it REALLY won me over when I had a motorcycle accident. It automatically called the police and ambulance services to my location. It also informed my partner that I was in an accident, where the accident happened, and sent her periodic updates as to my location while I was in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. The most amazing thing is that it didn't even get the slightest scratch, and still looks brand new. Bloody love this watch. I do not regret this purchase in the slightest.

I've had mine since the beginning of November. I've recently had an accident which ended up with me hitting the floor at a high speed. The watch took a big hit but it survived and also called emergency services. By the extent of the damages and where they were, if it would have been any other Apple watch model, it would have been a goner. Now it has a story to tell with a few scratches. I bought the Ultra as soon as it became available. I too was concerned with the size and price, not because if I could afford it, but more if it was worth the extra expenditure over the Apple Watch 8. The SUV analogy works well. The AW Ultra still isn’t at the fitness level. The Action Button is an *improvement* because I have tried using my Series 2 and Series 5 as running watches but they don’t work. Sweat makes the touch screen hard to use, the native fitness app sucks, and doing things while your running is just inconvenient with a touch screen. One more button on the Ultra 2 would be an improvement.

Thanks for the honest review, I am a Crossfitter and even ran an ultra marathon so a Garmin is probably better suited for me as an athlete, but I still love my AW ultra because it tracks those things well enough, but also meets my needs for a smartwatch way better than any Garmin could. Battery life was the key to make this a viable solution to track my longer trail runs and track sleeping. I am looking to upgrade to either the 8 or the Ultra. The Ultra looks pretty huge. I also am into crossfit and notice sometimes my watch gets in my way during certain workouts (anything where your wrist is bending a lot like cleans) and have to flip it around. Have you had any issues with the Ultra during Crossfit workouts? Thanks
@fitdude2 жыл бұрын
@@mattzahn117 I have issues with Apple making it so the watch display goes to sleep instead of being always on, that is when using 3rd party apps. Physically getting in the way I have an issue when wearing wrist wraps...but to take care of it accidentally pressing the crown or other button, I have the watch configured so I wear it "upside down" so the crown is facing up my arm instead of toward my wrist and that has fixed that issue. I used to accidentally trigger the emergency call when doing crossfit, but that has gone away with the new configuration. You just have to go into settings to flip the screen orientation. I don't really hit it on anything except when doing kettlebell snatches. I wear it high enough on my wrist all the time (up past my wrist bone) so it doesn't get in the way when flexing my wrist.

Hey man! The watch can't get out lazy assess out of our seats, only we can. But yes it will remind you to stand and move and you can set all sorts of reminders (e.g. To drink water). I completely agree with you that this watch can be great for "normal" people in normal situations, the SUV comparison was great. I have done some extreme things like advanced skiing and I have done quite a bit of diving, but I would mostly use this watch as an office watch. For diving I would use this as a backup watch but I would not us it as my primary diving computer. It just has so much complexity in it so I would not trust it for such important tasks, plus the diving computer I have has more features like it can give me the air supply of myself and my team. The things I like with the watch is 1. more battery. 2 better screen. 3 can snorkel/dive with it 4. looks better. Downsides 1. bulkier.

That's a really good review. I own latest Garmin Fenix 7 model and would surely NOT swap it to the AWU even for free but AWU has some really nice features in deed. Still way behind Garmin for health tracking features(talking about a global picture of your wealthbeing) but hey, AW is a mini iphone on your wrist, Garmin is a health tracker and sports tool (even if you're just a regular gym visitor like I am). AW won't make you want to go to the gym, Garmin will :) and not only gym but even a casual walk in the park, as every such activity would show the impact on your training readiness, recovery score, daily body battery and stress :) Anyways, Garmin and AW are a different worlds, IMO you need to try both to understand which one is for you. I picked health over the phone on my wrist. Peace :)

Both Garmin and AW(U) are _Smart Watches_ but each of them emphasises different area. Apple is more *Smart* whereas Garmin focuses on Fitness metrics. I'm on Garmin (now Vivoactive 4) but every year I'm asking myself "is it the time to swap to AW?". And still, the answer is "not yet". I'm sure, I'd love _Smart_ features of AW but I would be missing fitness features from Garmin. But the dealbreaker is AW battery life... So maybe next year 🤣 Cheers!

The Ultra is way smaller than I was expecting. I thought it would be extremely large but it seems pics online tend to distort the actual size. It is smaller than my 40yo Seiko diving watch and the Ultra is featherlight on my wrist. With regards to the Alpine loop I am using the medium version and when I take it off or put it on I place my thumb over that part of the display where the hook could swing up and hit the watch. Overall I am very impressed with it and I now wear it every day.

I've had my Ultra watch since November and it is *perfect* for me because of the battery life, usage since it lasts 4.5 days (you have to adjust some things you rarely use and remove it completely). I didn’t like the ‘prissy’ interface, found the complications a pain and the battery life… well, laughable. I charge my Garmin less than once a month and find it does most of the things the Apple Watch did and none of the unnecessary. The fitness interface, maps and Garmin App (which syncs to Apple health, Strava and Nike Running) to be far superior. In the end, I didn’t like how I felt wearing the Apple Watch and it became another thing to ‘look after’ as well as my phone. Sorry Apple, I tried.

Hi Patrick. My nephew is thinking of getting an Ultra and he is an all action guy. Like climbing mountains and that sort of stuff. He was curious to know what the signal strength is on the watch alone when using GSM. He regularly trains in the Snowdonia National Park, and has been up Snowdon more times that I can remember. His question is, what would the signal strength of the Ultra be, as compared to his iPhone when both at the same location. He is keen to ditch the phone and rely solely on his watch to make calls in areas where signal strength might not be the strongest. Have you any thoughts on this?
@PatrickRambles Жыл бұрын
That's a great question but not one I can help you with with I'm afraid. I haven't tested the watch in such conditions, the most extreme sport I do these days is go to the gym 😅. It seems unlikely to me that the watch will have a better signal than the iPhone. It does have the SOS function that uses satellites, but it sounds like your nephew is referring to making regular calls, which uses cellular.

Thanks Patrick for taking the time and trouble to respond, especially as quick as you did. I appreciate your comments and will pass them on to my nephew in addition to getting him to subscribe to your excellent channel. Keep up the good work!

This is the first time I've seen one of your reviews and I really appreciate it. Excellent review. The SUV comparison is perfect. Apple isn't scamming us, the watch genuinely does do the things is advertises... just like Jeep, Canada Goose etc... but real adventurers use less expensive, less stylish alternatives that offer the same if not better features.

100% the ocean band. I go to the gym a lot and I swim as well, I wouldn't want any of the fabric bands for that. The trail loop is super comfortable though, I'll wear that on off days 😅

@@PatrickRamblesthat’s what I thought! Actually I have a fitbit, that is a sports tracker, it has a 7 day battery autonomy, and I use it all day, also for sleeping. You thing it is worthy get the ultra version or the series 8 is fine? Ultra is not too big in the wrist?
@PatrickRambles Жыл бұрын
That's really subjective, some people prefer the smaller 8. But if you're used to 7 day battery life, you're going to be disappointed. I used to wear a fitbit too and their excellent trackers but of course it's an entirely different experience. I can only give you my personal opinion and the ultra is the best smartel watch I've ever used.

Appreciate the video. I find my ultra to be great. Dont understand why when I forgot to set the action button on the running machine once it auto sprang into action. Vibrated me and asked am I training and when I pressed yes it brought forward the first 3 mins of my running on the machine too. It saved it. Only I have been on the running machine again and forgot the action button and then it never prompted me. KZbin videos are crap. So small no purpose. The phone is just for convenience but as soon as I answer I am saying I will call them back. Open car with it? Sleep tracker. I got same thick strap and it does go tight. I had the largest size. Any slacker and I wonder could the tail of the strap come out its retainer and then possibly the watch could fall off my wrist?

I'm a mechanic I have dropped my apple watch 5 in oil, slammed it on many things, beat the crap out of it and it still works just fine scratched to hell but still works. Is this something that can take a beating? Will the niceness of the watch hold up??

I bought an garmin instinct solar 2x and returned in the same day. The AWU, even with the low battery, is just so much better for what I do. I like bicycle touring so I always have a power brick, so keeping it charged is no problem. It syncs directly with my bosch ebike motor, and the navigation is nice since the watch vibrates for a turn, and notifies me in my air pods. New OS 10 lets me put 8 apps on the main screen. I really like this watch.

The old watch got some scratches on the glass and I know from a Seiko that I have that sapphire glass is scratch proof. I like how the glass is flush. I’m 65 and ride the bike every day so the fall protection is good. I love how the battery lasts longer and charges quickly.

I think the 8 or Ultra would do well for you. I'm not sure how senior you are but the safety features on these watches are actually useful (for anyone, but even more so for seniors). If you have a very slim wrist, I'd check out the 8 but otherwise go for the ultra. Much better battery life.
