Hey im watching the Video currently and just a few pointers for the next project, and for other viewers. Use a filler primer first and dont thin it out or strain it, You want it thick and full of the plastics it carries. Also when sanding it down use a speckle technique with a darker paint(black spray paint works great); or a quide coat is what its called. finally wet sand it with a block after its fully cured. use your aggressive grits sparingly for heavy trash areas. The guide coat helps identify your low spots quickly. and for sanding i suggest a step system of 600,1200,2000. Take your time and you should have a glass finish everytime.

I think you did a great job! Your near automotive paint finish looks fantastic. The Bed-liner / raptor liner method is way quicker and low effort but it’s basically a popcorn ceiling cover up. Your work though was Top Shelf. You’re giving DIY people like me the confidence to try and learn new techniques. Oh and your little girl is a sweet heart and I’m sure she will be spending some great camping nights with Dad in this RTT.

There will be an appreciable difference in aerodynamic drag (fuel economy) at highway speeds between a shell finished in bedliner and one finished to the level shown in this video... If that matters (long road trips, smaller vehicle, etc) I think I a quality paint job will pay for itself quickly!

Great Work! I've started with mine last year after I was inspired by your videos. Still have to do the fabric-work and finish the paint. (Will probably upload pictures to the facebook group once its done) Keep up with the great content! I really like that you are so honest with your mistakes and errors...helps us all learn with you. Greetings from Switzerland :)

Looking good! Color matching my camper shell to my truck was my first and only time painting anything. If I had any advice, it would be to ditch the orbital as soon as it looks remotely smooth and block sand from there on out. Look into spraying a guide coat as well. The more you guide, block, guide, block… The closer you can get to mirror finish.

Just found your channel, and gonna catch up on everything as soon as I can. Great work - and please don't think I'm criticising - but you may have found it easier to get flat before the primer if you had used a guide coat before sanding. Thanks for sharing and now subscribed 👍

Maybe it's a lack in the USA 1 you could have used car body filler it dries in 30mins following that don't sand so heavy with the guide paint fill the lows etc, finally you could use a self leveling primer that fillis all the divots in 1 coat and levels smooth , good job just a bit over worked . Happy camping

Just something for you before you get too far with mounting it. Rustoleum paint isn't great with UV. You may want to consider a clear coat (there are 2K aerosol) available that are super durable.

I’m not saying your wrong but in my experience of using this formula I’ve never had any issues. I have a black tailer that sits in the sun all day every day and it has held up extremely well over the years.

@@PatrickRemington No doubt Rustoleum is tough stuff. When I look at Rustoleum paint jobs (cars), they don't hold up without a clear coat. Maybe something to do with flat panels and lots of surface. Either way, good stuff on the tent. I've been following along for a long time.

Hello Patrick, I whoud have just two small questions for you if you don't mind. I applied epoxy and fiberglass all around the back contour. I would like to know if it's necessary to sand a little bit before applying a second coat of epoxy over it (as a put the fiberglass 24 hours ago). The second question is : have you planned to do something on the inside of the top of the tent ? I made a big mess with epoxy in there and I was thinking about hiding this mess with something like thin insulating material. Thanks again for those great videos !
@PatrickRemington
@PatrickRemington 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, sand before your second coat. You don’t have to go crazy on it just scuff the surface. I do plan on covering the underside with fabric.. mine is a mess too

Wow it looks great, I think you did an awesome job. For future painting reference if you alternate you spray patter it eliminates the zebra stripes affect. So like you did all long ways but the next coat should of have been 90 degrees to that width ways and then back long ways and then weight ways. Alternating pattern gives more color coverage. And even a brand new fiberglass shell would still have waviness to it. There isn't much of a way to get around it on large flat areas.

I know it's too late for this build but when trying to get the top to a nice smooth surface it might be worth looking at a filler coat. I saw it mentioned on this surfboard video and I think it goes a long way towards creating a nice finish with less fill and sanding kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHK2Xn-Qiperd7M
