Been mixing rustleum colors for years to make my own, haven’t had a problem yet. Literally just mixed royal blue with smoke grey to make a grayish blue that I’m in the process of spraying my bike with. Wish i say this video before i might have added the metalic silver to add some flake….hmm didn’t clear it yet

I just bought some silver metal flake 0.004 size. Can I just add that to the rust-oleum and spray through a 1.4 tip or should I use my 1.8 tip? I would think if I used the 1.8 tip the paint shouldn't be mixed 1:1 but 3:1?

I thought I was the only one that was mixing the aluminum with the solid colors to get what looks a lot like an automotive metallic paint... 1:1 paint/thinner... I haven't sprayed it that thinned for a while. I've been trying 2 and 3:1 and higher gun pressures trying to get it to layout smoother/less orange peel, but I haven't tried Japan Drier, I may have to try that, it should be safer then using an enamel hardener.
@gorrillacgorilla4054 жыл бұрын
I spray it at 20-25 psi when I do...I started using Japan Dryer when I did some trailers a few years back on a whim never looked back...you're not the only one with the "orange peel" others have reported it too.
@michaelmayfield99012 жыл бұрын
The way I get rid of orange peel is just lay one thick coat 1:1, almost to the point of dripping and it lays out real smooth with no orange peel at all. Every time I would try multiple thin coats it never turned out good.

Red yellow and blue don't give near as nice colors as magenta, yellow, and cyan do. Red yellow and blue always results in dull colors. I like the nice idea though and was actually wondering if this could be done

Hello I’m new to this channel so I plan on painting my truck white with rustoleum. But I now take interest in adding a pearl/ metallic or maybe the color shift effect. So what i would need to do is primer paint my solid white then ad the color shift powder into the clear then lay that on ?

So I didn't know you could (successfully) mix painting systems. Rustoleum is an oil enamel; the clear coats you mentioned, I believe, are urethane products. I don't think they chemically "bond" to each other. It might look good for a while but ultimately I think the clear coat will peel away from the rustoleum. Also, what would be your re-coat windows (flash time). Rustoleum takes alot longer to dry than urethane paints. Would you have to let the rustoleum completely dry (for days) before adding the pearled clear on top of it? You might get solvent pop it the rustoleum is still drying underneath fully cured urethane clear coat.

@skelafeti5 жыл бұрын
I noticed you used paint thinner to mix with. Rustoleum says to use acetone. I don't think it matters except for flash time. What do you think? I used naptha before and it came out ok but I haven't experimented enough with thinner/acetone or the japan drier. I suppose it doesn't matter too much using the japan drier though. Maybe don't even need to use it with acetone since it flash's the quickest out of thinner and naptha. How about a hardener? It adds some UV protection from my understanding.
@gorrillacgorilla4055 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's 100% mineral spirit's and the japan drier...and yes I have added enamel hardener in to the paint before. Really didn't make the Rustoleum have better gloss retention but clearing over it really helps. I paint my trailers every couple years to keep them in good condition and rust free. I know a lot of other guys use acetone with great results but I've used mineral spirits for years now without problems. I don't really rely on the gloss the paint has I use clear over it as shown in other videos I've done and if I wanted to paint a car I wouldn't leave it without the clear to protect it better far to cheap to buy a 2k clear even on a super tight budget.
@mpikas4 жыл бұрын
@@gorrillacgorilla405 They changed the labels a few years ago, they used to all read to use mineral spirits to thin, then the aluminum got a label that said acetone and now I believe that they all say acetone. I don't think the paint changed any, I believe VOC rules did. Either way, as long as it's warm enough I've had better results with mineral spirits, but there is a point somewhere in the 50* range that it just won't dry for days or weeks with mineral spirits.
