Awesome tutorial - I come from After Effects expressions... so, this is incredibly helpful to translate my knowledge to Resolve. Please keep these more advanced tutorials coming. Thanks a ton!

Yeach I want switch from After Effects to fusion too... just can't because shape system sucks in fusion but I am happy that there is anyone that can have alternative to After Effects because there aren't much.

I've been at this for a few years now. When I first saw you use a modifier, my mind was blown. Thre's still a lot I don't know about modifiers, but this adds an extra dimension of things I didn't previously know existed.. Thanks and keep up the outstanding work.

There should be more of this on youtube. Using expressions and modifiers is a game changer and more people should know about it. Thanks for making these types of videos!

Holy mathematics Batman! This is mind bending stuff, but... an excellent tutorial into the power and versatility of Fusion. The more I watch your tutorials Patrick the more my mind boggles at the power of DaVinci Resolve. This is too much for my puny brain 🤯

Really enjoying your videos. There is one thing, though - for us noobs it's kind of hard to understand hy we're doing what we're doing without understanding the deeper meaning of functions like 'publish'. I can press the button and see controls change, but I have no idea what it changes behind the scenes. I haven't seen a video from either you or elsewhere that does like a 'dictionary' for Fusion, which would be hysterically helpful. Maybe an idea for a future video?

it's a big challenge for sure. I can't guarantee viewers have seen any specific of my past video and I also don't feel like I can start from scratch every video. I do feel like I lean more beginner-friendly generally so I hope I can find a good balance with more advanced stuff like this!

Glad to see a thorough video on these controls. Feels like I learned this stuff from disconnected videos before, which makes it much harder to learn how it all works together. And the example effect is pretty useful in a lot of contexts. Very well done. Feels weird to have a gripe with this, but I'm wondering why you didn't use floor instead of ceil. It would remove that problem with the text reaching the end before the animation.

Really great video, thank you. One question: it seems that many of these tasks could also potentially be accomplished using expressions rather than publishing and creating modifiers like you did here. Would you say that there are any particular advantages of one approach over the other or is it just a matter of preference?
@PatrickStirling
@PatrickStirling 19 күн бұрын
there are some definite advantages. modifiers can link and determine parameters a little more behind-the-scenes in a way than can save processing power over using expressions. expressions have to check in with the control they are linked to every frame to see if anything is updated. however if you have multiple stacked modifiers there is absolutely a tipping point where one complex expression might be more efficient than many complicated modifiers linked together

So here's my issue with davinci fusion now that i took the time to learn a good bit of info on how to use it. I find it hard to do certain things that are just simply easy to do in after effects. Me drawing a line and adding a trim path to it to animate is by far more simple to do in after effects than fusion. It was a frustating experience of me simply trying to see how to do it on my own, and simply giving up and going back to after effects. It's also hard to understand how to apply multiple effects to an cut png image i was using in 3D space for an 3D edit i was trying to do. It's so much easier to just drag and drop like in after effects, as suppose to trying to figure out in what way to sort nodes in order for certain things to work. When it comes to editing keyframe graphs, after effect also leds in that department as all someone has to do is highlight the keyframes, click the graph symbol and drag the handles to a liking. I don't even understand what im looking at in fusion way of trying to do that. I can go on and on bout what after effect does better than fusion, for example it's easier to set up 3D editing in z space in after effects than it is in fusion "z space" and etc. There just isn't enough videos bout fusion and how to do all of these essential things we need that is simple in after effects. I love of davinci with how everything is in one app, and how easy it is for me to voice record and add that to fusion. Maybe the lack of "how to do" vids from people who use davinci is the reason these things are a hard time righ now in fusion, but after effects is just better right now. Maybe you can help by providing what fusion is lacking in that department by making vids on how to transfer from after effects and the things i named, to how to do these exact things and more in fusion

So after making a fancy animation in 16:9, I wanted to use it for 9:16 videos, but the scaling of my background masks was completely off. Seemingly stretched by the percentage of the aspect ratio change. But the text was not stretched, just looked small. Could you give some tips on how to work with graphics for both 16:9 and 9:16?

In the vector result modifier try setting that Aspect slider to 1. There are some interesting things you run into when trying to work between horizontal and vertical

on that vector result you'll want to set the angle there if you want the graph vertical instead

@@PatrickStirling Great, one last question. in the text expression I put AnimCurves1.Value*30, (I want my 1scale to be a measurement of 30). Putting ceil(AnimCurves1.Value*30) shows me only whole numbers, ¿is there a way to get it show measurements in increments of .5? for example scale 0.25 = 7.5, or at least only show results to one decimal?

Hey, Patrick! So I'm pretty new to davinci resolve and editing in general so I downloaded a bunch of your free presets the other day (they'e all amazing btw) but when I actually try to apply them to my clips my framerate goes down and the video starts stuttering. Any idea whats causing this? It shouldn't be my hardware as i'm using a pretty high end pc but I'm completely lost on what else it could be.

a lot of fusion effects will require caching for smooth playback. in the menu head to Playback>Render Cache>Smart. and when the bars over the effects turn from red to blue to should have smooth playback on the timeline

This is so ridiculous that you cannot make that in shape system. Blackmagic needt to make some updates with shape system. I want to be finaly able to mix shape nodes with effects like glows and stuff without losing quality and import SVGs already into shape nodes. Who else agree ? Where we can report that missing feature ? Why not many people speak about it ? Is Blackmagic even interested in making this update in the feature if not I don't know for what there is shape system anyway then.

You could make this in the shapes system you would just have to go about building it in a little different way and in this video I really wanted to show off some cool things about working with published points

You might as well be speaking Greek… You’ve lost us after about the first two minutes. There must be a way of learning the basics… What the fuck is publish this? What the hell is publish that… We have no idea what you’re talking about. Thank God for after effects. Which makes perfect sense. I’ve never seen a good tutorial Explaining all the basics and what everything means in fusion. Or as we all like to call it,Con-fusion. I’m sure for your very advanced students… Your video made perfect sense.

It makes perfect sense after a while. Fusion is not easy at all, it took me two years to get comfortable enough to transition from AE to Fusion. Publishing just means that you can connect other parameters to a specific point. This is not available by default, because otherwise the "connect to" menu would ne completely unreadable. What could be done to make things easier to understand, is to rename the nodes and modifiers so that everyone has a sensible visual connection to the items on the screen.
