If you are looking for a great affordable rifle in an incredibly capable caliber, check out the Mossberg Patriot Predator in 7mm PRC...
While originally wary of this relatively new caliber, and questioning the capability of a rifle this inexpensive and light, I have continued to be impressed at every turn. After heading down to my local gun store, East County Guns, to get some Talley Rings and mount my Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44mm and rockset my Cherry Bomb Muzzle Brake, I headed to the range. Quickly getting the gun zeroed and some velocities using my Trash Panda Silencer and Magneto Speed, I've had a blast. Especially when I've taken the setup out to Rock Lake Rifle Range. This is an incredible rifle package...

Most to all bipods you can attach a sling swivel to the bottom of the mounting forks. That is why they have the holes in them.

Here is my problem with the 7prc the 175gr eldx from hornady is listed at 3000fps and no rifle is achieving this. I'm watching guys with 30in barrels barely achieving 3020. If you don't already own a 7mm rem mag sure buy one it's OK. If you do have a 7 rem mag just buy a fast twist barrel and push 180s at 3000+. Understand with the same bullets you are only 200fps faster than 7mm08 and 50fps faster than 280AI. And 150fps below 7mm rem mag. It is not the fairytale cartridge hornady sold you. 7mm rem mag, 28 nosler, 7mm weatherby, 7STW, 7RUM, 7SAUM, all can shoot the same bullet faster.

It's a thin barrel and really only suitable for hunting, not bench shooting. If you want this caliber and no barrel whip you are in for a heavier rifle. You definitely need a heavier rifle if planning on doing bench shooting. Having said that I am planning on buying one of these for hunting only and will be most likely putting a brake on it. And yes, I noticed that magnificent barrel whip. Never saw any rifle do more than that one did. Still wanting to order one for hunting though.

Many people think that because of their price they are not good. Only thing is they do have thin barrels. They are very suitable and practical for light hunting rifles. I don't think they guarantee sub-MOA but who can at those prices. That may be another reason people think the way they do. I have seen too many videos of people shooting sub-MOA out of those rifles to question their accuracy. I am thinking on purchasing one a bit later today if it's still in stock just for hunting. That is all a thin barreled rifle is really good for anyway. They heat to fast to be a bench rifle. But they have a lot going for them for hunting.

With that thin barrel it does not make any sense trying to make it a target rifle. Barrel heat and mirage being the negative factors especially with a magnum style cartridge. But you may be taking a lot of time between shots if you are counting the cost of those bullets. Your stock cost more than the rifle.

@@garrytalley8009 I'm just punching paper to reload honestly. I like creating loads more than I like the shooting, so a nice platform lessens that aggravation. The range I shoot at is 20 minutes live, 10 minutes cold; so I shoot 3 5 round or 2 10 round groups per live session. If I am working with more than one gun that day, I alternate during the same live session. It would definitely not be a competitive rifle in any sort of competition, but it did let me get a 7 PRC factory rifle early.

Try taking that thumb and unwrapping it leaving it pointed straight towards the target. It imparts less impact including pulse on the gun and is more ergonomic with a straight back pull. Great video

Velocities were kinda low. I’d be curious to see if it speeds up significantly after break in. I’m getting significantly faster speeds out of my 22” 7 PRC. Personally I wouldn’t trust Mossberg on an important hunt (too many horror stories out there) but I’m glad to see yours shoots for you.

That is the speed you get out of heavy for caliber factory loads. All you need to do is read the box. Mistake having any magnum size cartridge with less than a 24-inch barrel, especially if you are concerned so much about velocity. People who use a can one can understand but shorter barrels less velocity.

There is ammo but it's not cheap. This caliber is one of the highest in price today. Even the rifles are a bit pricier in this caliber. For example, this clambered rifle in a 6.5 PRC can be purchased for less money in many rifles from different manufacturers than the 7mm PRC. It's one of the current most popular.

Found the info I was looking for thanks it’s crazy the harmonics from the can on the barrel you can see the whole barrel shake I think if I get one I’ll have my gun smith shorten my barrel to about 20”
@garrytalley8009
@garrytalley8009 8 ай бұрын
Why? If you want a 7mm PRC with a shorter barrel other manufacturers have them. Not only that the barrels will be wider, this is a super skinny barrel made to be a light hunting rifle. If you have a gunsmith shorten the barrel you have to pay to have it crowned, or crowned and threaded that would cost nearly as much as the rifle or more depending on the gunsmith. Not only that taking 4 inches off the barrel will lose at least 200 FPS in velocity. Why would you want to make a rifle that is the cheapest on the market exceed the price of a higher priced rifle with more bells and whistles and be inadequate for the cartridge its shooting as well. This is a value priced hunting rifle. Not a bench rifle. Having said that I am wanting to order one of these for hunting only. Not shooting lots of bullets just zero and hunt. If you want a bench gun buy one. A Ruger or a Howa 1500 would be better choices and they are a lot less money than buying one of these and having a gunsmith shorten the barrel. BTW they can be bought threaded. Much better choices for bench shooting. Good reviews on both of them.

That barrel will get hot as hell anyway it's very thin did you see the whip in that barrel? Having said that I am thinking about one of these for hunting definitely not bench shooting. I am thinking a brake would be good, but a tunable brake may be better. I don't know about you but even reloading I couldn't afford just shooting this thing at the range. Eric Cortina has tunable brakes around the $200 price point. That is where I am leaning after ordering one of these. Just for hunting and checking my zero before hunting season. Too much money for the bullets to shoot regularly.

Some companies have a 3 position safety for when you're hunting so if brush catches your bolt when it's slung you won't unlock your bolt. I went through some brush after a buck I shot and by the time I drug it down a hill 20 yards to the creek to gut it, I noticed my bolt was back and round was gone. I had no idea and couldn't find the round. It's a pretty cool feature for times when it's slung.

You do know that you can shoulder a sling with the barrel down and not have that problem don't you? It's not as easy to shoulder and shoot from that position but if one worries about losing their bolt it's a sacrifice that can be made. There are pros and cons to everything.

What were they chambered for? A big thing I've seen with the patriot in particular is the chambering affects accuracy (which is true theoretically for most rifles, but it shouldn't have "that" big of an impact) Patriot rifles chambered in "legacy" cartridges (.308, 7mm-08, .30-06, etc) don't shoot as well as rifles chambered for modern cartridges with tighter chamber specs like 6.5 creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, and 7mm PRC (one point to note is that those are all hornady chamberings) My theory is that Mossberg gets those chamber reamers from Hornady directly, and their "legacy" reamers they probably source from lower cost manufacturers to help keep the prices low and they're probably poorer quality. I've seen multiple .308 patriots have accuracy problems (like probably 10+) but EVERY Hornady chambering I've seen in a patriot has shot at least acceptably well (generally 1.5 moa or better depending on specific load tested at the time) For just $100 more you can get the Ruger American in 7PRC and I haven't seen anyone that has much bad to say at all about that series, they're not as reliably awesome when it comes to accuracy as something like a Tikka or Bergara (which is who I'm waiting for a 7PRC offering from) but they're usually sub MOA or very close with good ammo.

For me personally, I'm not gaining enough out of the 7mm PRC to transition off of my 7mm Rem Mag. A heavier bullet doesn't mean a lot to me, and a additional 50-75 fps at the muzzle is nice but doesn't make up for the extra felt lbs of recoil. With bullet drop at 400 being a .5-1" difference, felt recoil, lack of ammo/components I think I'll stick to my Bergara for a few years more. Great video though.

You are spot on for yourself having a 7mm Rem Mag. I too reload. I have many rifles but am thinking I will order one of these just to hunt with using the factory ammo. I can get a good deal on the same rifle he is shooting. This is not a bench rifle and only suitable for hunting. I am not a fan of belted cartridges. For a person not having a 7mm Rem Mag and wanting one and will only hunt with a rifle the 7mm PRC may be a better choice. I definitely would purchase a different rifle than this for anything other than hunting. Belted cases can go bad at the belt after just a few firings. It's hard to see until it happens. I have a 300 Win Mag, have had a 7mm Rem Mag and a 7mm STW as well as a 30 Super. So, I have had many belted cartridges I have reloaded for. I have lots of guns that have given me a lot of fun hunting and at the range. I know I don't need another rifle, but then again, why not?

Watch who tee who. He shot several sub 0.5 in 3-shot groups with the standard Mossberg patriot in 7PRC. Jim had trouble with a 308. Don’t let one reviewer make you swear off an entire line of rifles offered in a whole suite of chamberings. Plenty of people have had luck with Mossbergs. Everything I’ve seen on the ruger 7 PRC has shown poor accuracy. Most of their offerings are rock solid. Even a generally good line of rifles can have a dud chambering.
@garrytalley8009
@garrytalley8009 8 ай бұрын
You are right that even a good rifle can shoot bad, but it's not necessarily the chambering. Most the time it is the load, or it can be something physical like loose screws, stock issues and the like. I have had many rifles that were not easy to load for but once a load was found they shot sub-MOA so long as the rifle was fit to the stock well and the optics were installed correctly. It is true that some cartridges are harder to load for. Usually a .308 Win. is easy to load for. I have a rifle that was difficult to get good groups out of in. It took a lot of loads to get it to shoot good, but it does. It's a blessing to get a rifle that is easy to load for. Even match rifles can shoot lousy with bullets not to their liking@@Snailz5

@garrytalley8009 8 ай бұрын
Out of the box comparisons don't tell you anything. Many rifles shoot better just changing ammo. If you handload you can make any decent rifle shoot sub-MOA most all the time. The PRC family should shoot well with factory ammo because it is designed for precision. I reload and am thinking on purchasing one of these Mossburgs myself. I am not liking thin barrels, but for hunting being light in weight is a super plus. I may just shoot factory hunting ammo rather than try to reload for it. It could take a lot of money to develop a better load than the factory loads, and that light barrel isn't designed for bench shooting anyway. With a slightly heavier barrel the Ruger American is most likely a better rifle to get if you are planning on bench shooting. Forget what groups and comparisons come off of KZbin. If you do KZbin, go the Backfire and he does a review on the Ruger American in this cartridge. He thinks it's the best value and very accurate.
