Years ago I bought a bag of wooden spools a the Outdoor quilt show in Sisters Oregon. More recently my sister in law gave me a box of old thread spools her mother had. I’m redoing my sewing room now. For decoration I am going to make a string of spools & wooden beads with tassels on the ends, hope it turns out like I have pictured in my head.

Hi Jen. Thought of you when I happened across a biography of sorts about Laura Ashley herself. it surprised me, in that she dressed very plainly, and I never saw her in a print herself, just the sewing and then manufacturing of ditsy print ruffly dresses she is known for. I also didn’t know she died in the 80’s, after a fall down the stairs. Her children are also quite creative and her husband still alive at the time of the documentary - he was apparently the brains behind her creativity. So, sew, interesting. It’s a British channel, but should be easy to find. Worth watching, about 3 or 4 hours of her life and company.
@TodayinJensSewingRoom

Thank you! I saw that same documentary. I was aware of a few of the details but not all. The fact that she was so committed to family really impressed me. And she didn't know how to draw! Wow! She just researched and researched and researched. It sure paid off. Her designs are timeless.

Love thrifting fabrics. I live about two blocks from a Salvation Army and have bought way too much fabric for 99 cents a chunk there. I have used some and give away some of the quilting fabric but yes, I don’t need to buy another piece of fabric, oh until next time😊 it seems like any fabric 3 yards or less is 99 cents, over that it is 2.99. I have picked up some big pieces big enough for quilt backs for 2.99. It was almost as much fun to see your haul as buying it myself.

Jen, I might have a gift for you. I have the companion print to the Bramble print. It was a dust ruffle and just like the trim of pillow case, so about 15 in wide by about 6 yards. It's poly cotton, so quite firm. Might be nice if you wanted to make a tiered dress. After 12+ years I have to admit I wont't use for decor again. Yours for just the cost of postage if interested.

Wow, look at you! Did you leave anything for your friends when you make your big trip?😂 I've made the Vogue Mizono dress - I did it in a dark charcoal linen blend for concert attire. One thought about this pattern: It was lovely to put together, and it fit me really well, but there is a LOT of fabric in that skirt. My fabric was a thicker than it needed to be (especially since the bodice part is lined, so two layers), so the dress is pretty heavy. If you've already made it, then you already know this, of course 😛 I would love to make another in a lighter fabric, thanks for flashing the picture and reminding me about that - it would make a great summer dress!
@TodayinJensSewingRoom
@TodayinJensSewingRoom 2 жыл бұрын
Nope, I took it all! Actually, there was quite a bit left. I bet your Mizono dress was just stunning. I made it too, but in a cotton shirting that although somewhat heavy, probably not as much as linen! The bodice didn't fit me at all - but I have a similar bodice that does, so I kept the skirt and am just going to make a new bodice for it. I just found it, actually, while going in to put patterns away which led to reorganizing my entire scrap pile and creating more decorating and storage "opportunities." ADHD. Squirrel! 🐿

It's basically McCall's 7948, but dramatically altered. I used the bodice from the Tessuti Eva dress, then added an additional tier and bottom ruffle, plus I increased the gathering on each tier from about 1:1.5 to roughly 1:2.25. The dress is really heavy, made of calico cotton from Hawaii Fabric Mart, and is probably my favorite thing I've ever made.

JEN!!! Those aren't thistles. Those sheets are from the late 90's. They are from a LAURA ASHLEY (you've heard of her, right? 🤣) collection called Bramble. Bramble bushes are found throughout the British countryside and are loved despite their prickers for the delicious black berries that grow on them. If you don't think of something fab to make from that fabric I'd be willing to buy it.😊

I have a suggestion for all the you tubers. I get very excited if I have bought a pattern and search for the pattern number, it will pull up videos of the pattern being made, if the you tuber puts the number in the video description. Would be wonderful if everyone was aware and always listed the pattern iin the description if it is a make on the video. Do not know if there is a way to let each one know.
@TodayinJensSewingRoom
@TodayinJensSewingRoom 2 жыл бұрын
Back again from up above, Mary - actually I think when you do the search, the algorithm is looking for tags. When we tag our videos, it makes them searchable by keyword. I have a feeling that most sewing YTers tend to put the pattern keywords in - but clearly some don't. It would be great if they did! There's not really any way to communicate to everyone, but mentioning it in comments goes a long way. I always put the links to patterns I use unless they're out of print (OOP) or vintage, in which case I just give you the year. Again, not really a way to spread the word in a widespread way but keep mentioning it in the videos you watch and it will probably catch on.
