As an apprentice in the early sixties I was convinced that no machine could take pattern development skills away from the tradesman. How wrong I was, computer software programmes allied to CNC punch presses or lasers can knock out the piece full size in a fraction of the time it used to take me all those years ago, although at 71yrs, I'm still capable of doing it. Old metalworkers never die, they only lose their tools.

Excellent layout I am a vocational sheet metal worker teacher /welder/fabricator and these days all sheet metal fittings are cut out with plasma machines but it’s great to go back to a sheet metal worker grass roots of triangulation radial line development and parallel line development I still, teach this to the kids Thanks A life time of learning no mater how long you have been doing it Navy Seabee welder sheet metal worker

So great for you to share this. I’have been looking for these kind of videos for a while. Now i understand what the hell is triangulation is. I think if you put more of these in a videos and sell im the first one to buy it. Please do more patterns whenever you like. Thank you very much again sir.

Hey Dave. So is it possible to draw an offset truncated cone where the base is fitting on a pipe?
@Yeska343 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Great video.
@ChrisBrown-qg4xo5 жыл бұрын
Will this also work for a sitting on a 5:12 pitch? In other words the bottom isn’t parallel with the top. I know you have a radial mapping for a truncated cone, but I am asking because this takes less paper!

Nice video Dave! I learned this way as well. There`s only a few fittings left in the HVAC field which computer driven plasma cutters can`t make. This is why I am needed and make a decent buck. You should do a video on a Parker fitting, I know they are not SMACNA standards, but they have their place in the field, usually it`s a lazy-ass field guy who won`t cut back the supply or return drop from the RTU and just add a change of direction with an elbow, other times there`s just no room.

If I was to do an elleptical cone (top view being basically two ellipses), how could I lay out a pattern? I would have two different side views, one like a larger trapeze and the other narrower. Should I use triangulation?

What are the courses at a college where you can learn these techniques? Thanks and great video!
@davidosland14406 жыл бұрын
Good question!! I taught these in a local CC in a sheet metal class. You'd have to enquire at your near by community college to see if anything like this is offered. The sheetmetal workers union may still teach layout, but I have a feeling that things are going to software programs these days....I refer to "Sheetmetal" by Leo Meyer, when i need to refresh my memory on different pattern making. Dave
@David-pf8no6 жыл бұрын
I am a 'Structural Steel & Plate Fitter' in Canada, and part of our technical training for each term included a very in depth pattern development and layout class which taught us the techniques you used in this video plus some. I took that class a while ago and needed a refresher as I am going to be tasked sometime in the near future with forming a dozen 48" to 20" offsets over a 36" height out of 1/2" PL. Everything will be cut on our CNC plasma table but as with seemingly every complex part that we fabricate in our shop, the drafting department overlooks some critical information which sets things back. It almost seems like its routine now for that department to run detail drawings past me before they get the engineers approval stamp. It always makes my foreman smirk when the ego driven engineering techs have to come meet with me (a 22 year old apprentice) so they can issue accurate drawings. It just goes to show, if you can take the time to learn how to manually solve problems or do the work without the aid of technology your value will be seen. These younger techs making the drawings typically are really good with their software and making drawings but their lack of understanding of the fundamentals of metalworking hold them back from being great at what they do.. So I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your abundance of knowledge with the world, and giving people like myself an opportunity to add additional value to ourselves and our work. I hope there are other people that can take advantage of all that you are willing to share and I hope to see more content from your channel that I might be able to use one day. David

Ha lame. Gay. Buy a reducer and elbow. All that time to draw that. Then have to have a shop guy make it cost of overhead was exceeded. Cost of buying it 35$. And job done in 2 minutes apposed to 58 minutes.
@swaytiegooch44446 жыл бұрын
A fabrication apprentice could gain many credits for a job like this. Also can make custom sizes and offsets something that would cost alot more than $35. Once templates are done its light work
