The joke is that it's a show that imitates a late night comedy show but unlike regular late night comedy show it tries to be as unfunny as possible which makes it hilarious, again, unlike normie late night comedy shows like "touchy" trevor noah

It's hilarious to me when people try. He's coming back to the comedy club where I work. Hopefully later this year. His stand up is ridiculous as well. But when you see him perform the same stuff 6 times you start to see how he can make well rehearsed material feel like he's doing it for the first time.

I like the show because it lacks the "reality interviews" and jokes we know we're rehearsed days prior to shooting it. The celebrity quests being completely surprised, disgusted, or flat out scared makes it stand out and makes us see a real side to the celebrities

What makes Eric's pranks so special is how he delivers the joke. In most public pranks (or at least the kind on youtube), the joke is always about a strangers embarrassment. The "prankster" always films themself in an overly good and "cool" manner. (Ex. Bradbury brothers or prank invasion). What makes Eric's pranks so refreshing is that the prank is on Eric. He seldom puts strangers on the spot like any other prank. Eric essentially embarrasses himself in public and the stranger react. It is completely different from anything else out there. I admit that sometimes it does not work, but Eric's humor has always been an amazing hit, or a complete miss.

For me, enjoying Eric Andre was very natural. I kinda see his style as those abstract weird jokes you make up in your head but, coming to reality without the filter of making it a “tangible” joke through traditional means. He’s also got amazing comedic timing regardless, which is what really makes his show, add in Hannibal’s lovely contributions and you got a beautifully abstract comedy.

every artist/entertainer is a bit of a narcissit. every single one of them loves to get attention and to be praised, and eric andre specifically is the type of entertainer who loves to get a reaction out of their audience. I don't think he would be doing it even without an audience, because there simply isn't a point in being funny if nobody is laughing, or in being shocking if nobody is being appalled.

Yeah but it wasn't as good or as relevant, all the old school guys doing it like Tom Green, they had contemporary comedians who were doing traditional comedy that was much funnier than their brand of nihilistic comedy. Eric Andre is the first one, where it's as good as the top regular comics today and even the past. Andy Kaufman is the only one I can think of who was top of his game, but he left a huge gap for decades after he died and Idk if I would categorize him with Eric Andre, he's kind of a different brand of anti-comedy.

I feel the closest in style to what he does are Tim and Eric, in fact I thought they were part of his team (edit: I just found out that they produced it). But if you go a little further back, Andy Kaufman was one of the first comedians to explore a similar path. He wasn't about gross out or random violence, but he definitely liked to mess with his audience, staged awkward situations and overall seemed to enjoy having people not knowing what to expect from him.

He's one of the most fake deep people I've ever met. Eric himself even says "there's no deep or hidden message to the show. I'm just a guy that likes immature jokes". This guy is trying to call Eric a deep comedian when he's really not trying to be. The deepest thing about Eric's show is that he exposes the mundane and artificial interactions we have with complete strangers. Many people involved in the skits simply don't care about Eric or want to use him as a way to tell their friends their day was interesting. Yet they all pretend to like him just so they can maybe take a pic with him and tell their friends "look at this crazy guy I met" Hannibal's skit is actually a great example of this. When he was dressed as a cookie people wanted to interact with him and take photos with him. Then he says he's a registered sex offender and suddenly people want to fight him

@@bobnotrealnameman307 There exists a term called overanalyzing. Sure it may be a subjective term, but it certainly has its place. What does make his interpretation invalid, is that it's clear that he doesn't even understand what he's saying. He misuses words, and misses the mark of the jokes. Eric's cop stuck to the pole bit was not an example of nihilism. Not a huge fan of your analysis. You correctly identified Eric's show as "absurdist" humor. Instead of describing the psychology of Eric's motivations and what draws audiences to his show, though, you lump both under "there's no reason" and repeatedly repackage it as a profound observation for 20 minutes. Although you contrasted his "mind-numbing" bits with his "genuinely creative" and "clever" bits, you did not point out what distinguishes them. To your credit, you gestured at the idea that Andre's show is a commentary on late night talk shows generally. Yet you did not explore what Andre's show says about late night talk shows -- or how, or why. I doubt that you are "overanalyzing the show." I think you are _underanalyzing._ Also: "existentialism," "absurdism," and "nihilism" are not really interchangeable.

Reminds me of the Tim and Eric show, I remember the first time my I saw it, my grandma and mom and aunt were hanging out with me, my twin, and my baby sister, my grandma said turn on the Tim and Eric show then my mom got exited and we watched it all together, oh yeah and my uncle was there also. It was great, goes to show how serious my family is about the way they raise their children.
