One of best songwriters of all time. #1 all time in my book!

"Her father would tear out like a page of the bible. Then he'd burn down the house to announce his arrival." Good god, every lyric is just amazing. All of her songs hit me in the gut every time I listen to them.

"In the battle of time in the battle of will It's only your hope and your heart that gets killed" My God this woman writes the most powerful lyrics, and delivers them with such soft grace, yet with the power to slay armies. How Patty's songs are not known to everyone on the planet is beyond me.

Scott Russell I wholeheartedly agree. I took voice lessons to get over my stage fright in my mid-forties. I picked lots of Patty songs to practice but feared I couldn’t do her justice and my coach said if all I did was cover Patty songs and more people hear her words, I was doing a good thing. I’m finally ready to perform Long Ride Home. This song will be next.

I now live in the next town over from the one Patty grew up in. When she played on campus here, a guy with me there in the merch line said, "She used to be my paper girl." I feel honored.

so many of her songs break your heart, only to have a message of hope somewhere in the lyrics....that's genius

i've watched and listened to this over and over for so many years now.for me It has become a touchstone when i doubt about beauty & love being the most important things for all of us to try to focus on. This story is so beautifull and private and the way it is told with such delicacy and power it gives me hope that if one tiny person can grab a guitar and create such poetry there is hope for mankind. Thank you Patti Griffin. And thank you KZbin

Patty is my all time favorite artist and lyricist and I love this song...but growing up in the 70's and seeing so much childhood trauma up close and personal.. makes it real hard to listen to this song. It actually brings me back, like it triggers past pain. Thankfully as I get older I understand and accept certain things better. all the best...would love to hear if others have this feeling..

I feel so sorry for the people in Patty's songs. This one and Tony really make me feel other people's pain. I am sure Lorraine is the child of two parents with borderline personality disorder who think only of themselves. Especially the line about, "Isn't that a very strange thing to do for someone who never really wanted you." Typical BPD behavior. And the father who called her a slut and whore on the night before her wedding day and then turned around and gave her away. There's such dysfunction out there, and Patty really knows how to hone in on it. Love Patty Griffin!

Yes this does bring back the pain of a dysfunctional home in my childhood and the scars that came with it. Life deals out a lot of bad hands.

@@als3243 Hit the nail on the fucking head. Her side of the family never should have had kids - and yes I mean me too. Her mother was an addict, father alcoholic. My father an alcoholic, his father an alcoholic. Is it a surprise I'm dealing with addiction? And still deal with cutting addiction? It's amazing I've made it to adulthood. Yeah, she's admitted and apologized for all the pain she caused me growing up [mostly due to being in a relationship with a father who doesn't give a damn] but it doesn't take it away.

Just to throw it out there - love all the comments. This song was actually written about my mom - a fucking survivor who's finally found some happiness for herself, as well as being able to admit the emotional scars she caused me and being able to apologize. As well as accepting me for who I am.
