Lyrics: [ Top Of The World ]
I wished I was smarter
I wished I was stronger
I wished I loved Jesus the way the my wife does
I wished it had been easier
Instead of any longer
I wished I could have stood where you would have been proud
But that won't happen now, that won't happen now
There's a whole lot of singing that's never gonna be heard
Disappearing every day without so much as a word somehow
I think I broke the wings off that little songbird
She's never gonna fly to the top of the world now
To the top of the world
I don't have to answer any of these questions
Don't have no god to teach me no lessons
I'd come home in the evening
Sit in my chair
One night they called me for supper
But I never got up
I stayed right there
In my chair
There's a whole lot of singing that's never gonna be heard
Disappearing every day without so much as a word somehow
I think I broke the wings off that little songbird
She's never gonna fly to the top of the world now
To the top of the world
I wish I'd have known you
I wish I'd have shown you
All of the things I was on the inside
But I'd pretend to be sleeping
When you'd come in in the morning
To whisper goodbye and
Go to work in the rain
Now I don't know why
I don't know why
Cause everyone's singing, we just wanna be heard
Disappearing every day without so much as a word somehow
I wanna grab a hold of that little songbird
Take her for a ride to the top of the world right now
To the top of the world
To the top of the world.....

I heard this song for the first time when I was driving to the funeral of my estranged alcoholic mother. It was the first time I was actually able to break down and FEEL what I needed towards my mom.

I saw her perform this at Austin City Limits, a songwriter’s circle featuring her, Emmylou Harris, Buddy and Julie Miller and Dave Matthews. This song was the pinnacle of the evening, she had us in the palm of her hand from the first note. Brilliant song, gifted performer.

Her song "Long Ride Home" is another song of regret. It's about a man returning to his empty home after burying his wife of 40 years. I cry every time I hear it, thinking about how it feels to pull into the driveway and seeing your dark, empty house.

@@magiccitymama1620 Why do we listen to songs that make us shed a tear? I don't know. But I listen to them. I do know I love Patty Griffin's story telling and the way she delivers her songs with her lovely melancholy voice. I don't know anyone as good as Patty at telling a life story in a song or giving a lesson in life. That's one reason why I listen to them, time and again, more than any other artist....and shed a tear along the way. I've noticed it more for me as I have got older. At least it shows we can empathise I suppose.

I had always loved this song only having heard it from the Dixie Chicks. Started to wonder about its meaning, began to look at Wikipedia about it and low and behold I find this. How is this woman not famous? She wrote an amazing song and has an amazing voice.... I don't understand how it works. All I can figure is its about those who have connections and those who don't and those who capitulate and those who don't?

Griffin writes so perceptively and sadly about marriages where co-existence seems to be all that kept the marriage together. I would love to hear her speak to that theme. I am thrice-divorced, because I couldn’t stay.

My dad just died last month of kidney failure. He could never do anything right according to my mom. “... wished it had been easier, instead of any longer...i wished i could have stood where you would have been proud” seems like something he would say. When i first read the lyrics, it said to me he went to his chair and died there...and they called him for supper...and he just stayed right there in his chair...gone. Instead of supper for my dad...it was breakfast. That line broke me. He was gone.
