I bought my first car, and I put in a Pioneer stereo cassette player . I drove it from Newport to San Diego, falling in love with the sound of Patty Smyth singing. Now it’s 40 years later, and I still love to hear her sing. My first love, beautiful car, fantastic music, and being free. I’m going to drive back to New England, with my digital recording of Patty Smyth singing my favorite songs.

I've followed Patty's career for many years. Setting how beautiful she is aside, she obviously feels a song when she is singing it. That alone makes whoever is listening feel the meaning of what she is singing. Personally, I believe she just keeps getting better and better even though she started out amazing. I love her voice and I love the way she performs.

Patty was never given the recognition she deserved. At her prime she was a fine lyricist (Sometimes Love Ain't Enough) and her vocals are really nice - smooth yet gritty. I loved her stuff with the Pretenders and her music duets with Don Henley blend together beautifully. I think she should have really gotten more attention for her talent than she ever did. Her beauty was only icing on the cake. Love her artistry.

"I loved her stuff with the Pretenders"- your not saying she was in the pretenders are you? Becuase, Patty Smyth is NOT Chrissie Hynde, Patty is a great singer no doubt,.... But Chrissie is an Artist! A lyrical and insturmental artist
@reneed.murphy-hughes713410 жыл бұрын
No, I'm not. But I enjoyed her music collaborated on with the Pretenders, and thought her voice really complimented that of Don Henley's. She was, at least in that era, a song-writer herself. She and Chrissie have their own unique talents and sounds. Comparison is simply a matter of musical taste and preference. :)

After hearing "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" and being moved to tears by the raw passion of the Patty Smyth/Don Henley vocal split, then hearing "No Mistakes" and hearing her use the pain in the lyric as a form on healing, I BEGGED my mom and stepdad to buy me the full-length. They gave it to me as a birthday gift. For years, and even now, this record was my law. I love every song on it, and still do. It's perfect, both in presentation and production; every song a canny blend of slick and soulful, grace and grit, mood and melody...all these things blend together without being maudlin or maundering, which is a huge plus. I still listen to the CD at least once a week, and I will do it until I'm buried.

Everybody's got opinions. At age 58, I'd say Patty is one of the greatest (by far) female vocalists rock has ever seen. She came on the scene in the early 80s' with Scandal. Nobody really knew what she would do in the long run. As far as technical prowess, she's in say the top 5. Tina Turner would be up there, for instance. It's a disappointment to everyone that she did not become a "big" star. I for one felt she truly deserved it. She was upfront about feeling she needed to tend to her family, so that does come first. In any even, all of her records are first class, no bad cuts. She's got to play and sing with the best. Anyone who knows who she is gives her respect big time. In the end, that is enough.
@sbe796 жыл бұрын
She surely had the swagger and the chops. She could have very easily been Sammy Hagar fronting Van Halen and had lived in rock infamy, had she accepted Eddie's offer. She deserved the top, but I don't personally think she wanted it. She dropped out of Scandal at their height. After her 2nd solo album scored a massive international hit, she declined to record another album for 20 years. I think she was content doing what felt right and not thinking what would result in financial gains and fame. Which is, really, the epitome of badass. She is badass.

@@sbe79 Success in the music business is 1% talent, 39% marketing and 60% luck. So many incredibly talented artists don’t make a dent in the business. Some never get the airplay (does that still mean anything anymore?) some never get producers to back them (if it ain’t cookie cutter bullshit it’s not on their radar). This is why great talent gets overlooked. The only thing we can do as fans and consumers is spread the word. The only thing we can do as artists is keep putting music out there and hope the fans and consumers do the first thing.

Absolutely. And have you ever noticed that many of the most successful men vocalists (Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger, Randy Newman, and Kris Kristofferson come to mind) can't come close to the vocal quality of artists like Melissa Manchester, Patty Smyth, Ann Wilson and Vonda Shepard? It's almost like the women have to have better voices than the men just to get noticed.

From the days when songs were WRITTEN and constructed, starting with thoughtful lyrics and evocative, atmospheric melodies, working with layers of guitars, keyboards, bass and pounding drums, arranging the music and vocals so that each riff, each drum hit, each syllable had maximum effect and impact. This isn't modern pop, where someone pounds out a beat on a cheap-ass Casio keyboard and soaks the "vocal" in layers of Auto-Tune. This is REAL pop-rock. It's a throwback to a simpler time; a flashback, and a damned good one.

I don’t like all this stuff in comments on KZbin about this person better than that person etc. We should just appreciate what all the artists mentioned in these comments here have accomplished in their career. Patty Smyth solo or with Scandal made great music. Like many other singers, some that we might have never even heard of singing in bars, Patty Smyth had and still has a great voice. What makes a great singer to me is the character in the voice, Patty Smyth has much of that in spades. Lots of talent out there, let’s just enjoy what they all bring.

I lived in northern California when this song was released and this song got A LOT of radio airplay. I was glad it did because I got tired of hearing the other single from the album "sometimes love just ain't enough." I mean good for Patty more songwriting royalties for her. But they played that first single to death! I still listen to I Heart 80s radio today and every time the opening bars and then Patty's voice belts out to "the warrior" I turn the volume up! She deserved more chart success because her voice was very distinctive. Not pretty like Olivia's but more grit.

I was living in Fresno at the time and it was played a lot of the radio stations there. You're right - it was the better song from the album.

Patty, silky smooth vocals, so underated in the biz. I love you Patty, keep rocking! This track, sounds like Don Henley bars and notes....another duet???

@darkmike333 -her music has passed the test of time. The sign of a truly talented artist. I can' believe this song is almost 20 yrs old now. The ones you mentioned are considered classics now. I remember listening to "The Warrior" until my cassette tape was warped.

Well before the Taylor Swifts, and Katy Perrys of the world, there was, and is Patty Smyth. The projection, purity, and power, of her voice is far beyond the modern-day digitized singers. Her skill is multifaceted; modulating into any genre she chooses.

@@HeeHawCapital I have not forgotten them. I am a fan of both Dale, and Terry. Dale is an incredible lyricist, as well as a performer. Terry is skilled beyond most drummers of today. Patty Smyth, as a vocalist, is capable of any style, no matter the genre.

Such a simple tune, with a great melody. Then Patty takes it, adds her lyrics to it (which are beautifully universal) and lifts the song to a whole other emotional plateau.

I think if this song was released in 1989/90 instead of 1992 it would have soared to the Top 10, I would rather listen to this song over the grunge/alternative bands that were ruling the airwaves during that time period.
@LEO1WOLF8 жыл бұрын
Amen to that!

You're right. It was perhaps just a step out of time when it came out in late 1992. Radio was then teeming with the beginnings of both mainstream rap and the grunge movement. A female rocker doing a midtempo song was just a little past the time.

@@sbe79 or before it's time. She could have released that around the Shania era and would have made it bigger.
