I love Patty's note of how Thorn and Hawkmoon both excel at dealing with completely opposite enemy playstyles. It really reminds me that they are tools in the toolbox, and being in the same slot means they can be easily swapped to fit the situation. They can be brothers just as well as rivals! As for me, I prefer Hawkmoon. It has overall superior stats for a much better shooting experience, and they get even more juiced up with each stack of Paracausal Charge. It gets +1 meter of falloff reach per stack, so it can really punch out of its class with Rangefinder or Opening Shot.

Hawkmoon was my fav in destiny 1 but thorn got it for me after I finally started hitting ppl just getting double kills with the broken thorn buff. 2 tapping burn finishes them

Aim assist isn't what makes Destiny an unskilled game. Netcode that's an excerpt from an infinite monkey theorem experiment is what makes it an unskilled game. I've gotten away with headshots on enemies who are behind cover more times than I want to admit just because I had enough lag for them to still be on my screen, and that's not even with high ping.

Yeah too much lasagna and fettucine code fuckery that just can just sour so much. Gotta love the weirdness you can pull off with Occluded Finality's super zoomed in +high AA scope when you can get flinched for days but your shots just connect even tho you cleared someone's shoulder. Also melee nonsense and registration is so inconsistent, it genuinely feels like the bullshit from Halo Reach and 3 when the person with the slower connection could just force all the melee duel equal trades despite people with normal internet punching a whole lot.

For thorn damage - health regen starts immediately after the burn stops, often not impacting regen speed after a shot depending on the recovery stat The biggest bonus is that it also stops revives from the burn damage

While I know this is a battle between these hand cannons in PvP specifically, it's funny how these vary DRASTICALLY in PvE. Hawkmoon is very "screw this one thing in particular" while Thorn - whilst paired with Necrotic Grips - is "screw all these things in particular."

I want to love Thorn but something about the visual recoil or model makes it harder for me to hit my shots. Like it doesn't line up with other popular hand cannons like Ace, Fatebringer, Palindrome, etc. It's a real shame because I would love to incorporate it into a build with Frenzy or some other DoT effects to play its strength.

Thats because it still has its 150rpm recoil animation. All the 150 weapons still have their recoil animation even after they were bumped up too 140. 140 guns have always had the “better recoil animation” that is better visually to line up your shots. Reasons why ace has always been the best from the start.

Hawkmoon is by far my favorite hand cannon in the game. It has forced me to be disciplined, however in counting mag size and paracausal shots. I recently picked up the ace again as i hadn't used it in a long time. Due to the sheer number of perks it is hard to say it isn't the best. After getting comfortable with it and feeling like it was my new go to loadout I switched back to hawkmoon once for a quick comparison. The consistency I have with hawkmoon is so much better than that of ace I had a 6 stack of paracausal shot twice within the first 5 minutes of play (and being just an average player usually I get an6 stack every 3-4 games). After switching away and coming back I felt like I couldn't miss. Thanjs for the tip about th holster as I usually add a shotgun holster with the scavenger, but will try this out instead.

I think that's also due to Ace's 55 Stability which is 13 off the sweetspot for Recoil control. I have a Max stability Hawkmoon with Rangefinder that has 85 Stability and the thing is just so freaking consistent. 32.5 or so meters base but it is deadly. I will only use Thorn when I want to poison everyone with Necrotic Grips equipped. Sunshot is the same but with Path of Burning Steps. Ace with Lucky Pants because...Cayde. Last Word with Lucky Pants too because it's also a true western Duel lol. Sturm, Lumina, & Hawkmoon, that's where I don't really have a true preferred exotic to be used with it except for Boots of Assembler on Warlock or Crest of Alpha Lupi/One Eyed Mask for Titan. Crimson with health regen exotics because lol the ridiculousness of being unkillable with that much healing. Forgot about Malfeasance...for Malfeasance, Lucky Pants for DPS otherwise it doesn't bother me for what I use

I was bothered by Thorn's sights too, but I got the Heretic Robe ornament (the red one) when it was available for bright dust recently and it's so much easier to see what you're aiming at. The thorns protruding upwards from the side are gone and it's just a single ridge in the middle, nothing in the way.

Hawkmoon with a surplus perk is my favorite version of that weapon. Thorn on the other hand has a goofy recoil pattern and it blocks your view in such a way that it’s a learning curve to get the recoil down.

One of the only main stream players that's recommended Hawkmoon+Lucky Pants. I've had a guy literally laugh at me for running that and he said "why are you using anything other than Last Word with Lucky Pants?" And I'm just like dude, if you don't know why then don't worry about it. I can rinse heavy elites in PvE with one shot doing 340k+ dmg and turn right around and 2 tap max resil guardians in PvP. I'm not about to explain why it's so good to someone literally laughing at me for it. So toxic. Anyway thank you for sharing that because I felt like I was the only person that realized Lucky Pants were more versatile than just using one specific hand cannon, all hand cannons are better with them and some exotics like Hawkmoon are insanely good paired with them. Wonderful video, and yes the Austro raptor ornament is a must have lol I got it immediately when it dropped.

The Hawkmoon stacks the damage of the rounds with each kill and reserves the Paracausal Charge buff until the gun is stowed or reloaded. The Thorn gets a buff on kills too, but it doesn't last long. That said, I would go with the Hawkmoon.

When I made the decision to switch from a super aggressive shotgun play style to a sniper build, I pulled out Thorn. It took a while for me to get used to the sight and how it shoots (as in a month or 2), but once I got it down, I'm now comfortable challenging almost any situation within its range. The range stinks, and I really hope it gets a buff if they ever give it a catalyst, but if you can keep up the tick damage, the enemies usually duck into cover long enough for you to close the distance a bit. I wish I was good with Hawkmoon, but I main Transversives, so I'm constantly ruining the stacks. I also have trouble with the sight, though I may have to pick up the new ornament to improve that.

loving this vs that comparison videos,imo if im sniping (which i do most of the times in 3s and 6s) i will use thorn a lot more since it acts kinda like the old last word beloved combo that is so deadly , its proven time and time that thorn is my favourite hc ever and i agree that sometimes it does feel a tad wonky on recoil side,but if im playing a lot more passive and waiting for the right pickoff,id use hawkmoon,simply due to better stats and dueling capabilites at mid to far ranges esp with RF

If the map allows for thorn to be used effectively I think it’s the strongest hand cannon in the game because of being able to 2 head 1 body most guardians, give mini wall hacks and keep your opponents out of the fight for longer. I would definitely still take Hawkmoon on longer range maps though, being rewarding for landing your headshots feels incredibly rewarding

I've tested the regeneration of shields and thorn does not delay it. After the shot, shields will start regenerating at the same time as with any other weapon.

I'm just waiting to see if Thorn gets a catalyst either this season with the 30 year dungeon or next year with Witch Queen, it can still very much get one even if it's something basic like increasing the damage or duration of the soul devourer perk. It's this one and le monarque that I legitimately wouldn't care if their "masterwork" was literally just the fact that they can now generate orbs it would be worth it. That being said depending on what Thorn's catalyst was it could very easily put it at the top of the exotic handcannons as it competes now when its the only one of the top tier list that doesnt have a catalyst naturally

Destiny 2 has the right amount of Aim Assist, as in some weapons have more aim assist than others. The game is a looter, some loot needs to be better than others, and each weapon needs to feel different. Hidden stats like aim assist, accuracy, and recoil direction are all ways to achieve that. Having them as stats also allows them to introduce perks to improve it, so you can make a weapon feel better if you find a better roll. Personally i think the issue is those 3 stats being power crept as time goes on (really all stats). Look at palindrome. Really high stats all across the board, no downsides anywhere. If weapons had tradeoffs and strengths/weaknesses when it came to stats the game would be more balances.

The main problem with hawkmoon is that if you don’t have max paracausal, it won’t one shot. It’ll get them one-shot, but then you can’t follow-up, because you gotta reload. Thorn, on the other hand is more reliable, and leaves your opponent less time to breathe, and gives you more time to rush them before they start to regenerate because of the poison.

This might not apply to you but people that ask that question tend to be switching up their sens constantly, and then wondering why their crosshair doesn't go where they want it to. As a starting point, ask what other fps games you have played the most and most recently, Cod, Overwatch, even fortnite/apex etc, try to find settings that feel similar to those and stick with those settings for a few days. As you're on controller my personal recommendations would be use low ADS sensitivity with high regular sense, this let's you focus on being precise when you want to while being able to look around and turn quickly as there's no fov settings on console - Also bump up your "sprint turn scale" to help with this. My personal sens varies a little depending on what weapons I'm using but generally I go for 0.6 ads speed, and 6 regular sensitivity. I think my sprint turn is 8. I hope this helps you start out but for a lot more detailed/better advice check out Shadow Destiny on youtube, he's one of the best Controller destiny content creators around. :)

Your poll prompted me to give Hawkmoon a try. I've always found landing my shots with Thron super easy, predictable recoil etc but I'd never found the same with Hawkmoon. This might be an unpopular opinion, but for me, it's Thorn all the way. I know that Hawkmoon is a better weapon on paper, but I get way more kills with Thorn and I just find the gun provides a much more user friendly aiming experience. I also find the sound for Hawkmoon's shots to be really weak and unsatisfying... it just sounds distant and pitiful, almost like the gun is being fired 100 yards away from you. Of course, other people might think it sounds really cool and that's fine. It's certainly unique and recognizable, and to each their own. Thorn's underwhelming range and slow reload are initially a bit of a bummer, but I think those aspects somewhat counterintuitively work FOR the weapon, while also keep the gun in check. Thorn is expertly tuned for an aggressive playstyle. Lower range and the need to pick up orbs keep you closer to your opponents, and that works very well because Thorn is an amazing dueling weapon for close-mid range engagements, especially if you have the Soul Devourer perk up. The poison effect on your enemy's screen isn't earth-shattering, but can throw them off just enough to give you a handy edge in a gunfight, and the tick damage helps greatly with cleanup kills when guardians chicken out and try to heal around a corner. Thorn pairs beautifully with a CQC or Retrofuturist. All of this isn't to say Hawkmoon is bad. It's actually very, very good. Hawkmoon has great stats, and the option to roll with something like Opening Shot is fantastic. Strictly taken as a hand cannon without considering the exotic perk, Hawkmoon is packing heat. That exotic perk rewards skilled gunplay, but I have to say when it comes down to a battle between the exotic perks of Thorn and Hawkmoon, I find Thorn's to be more regularly useful. Hawkmoon's perk is capable of pumping out much more damage, but you need to be perfect with your shots and then it's only active for one shot, so you'd better make it count. Thorn's perk, however, is available after every kill and is on a timer, so every bullet you shoot is doing increased damage while the perk is up. I personally don't find much value in Hawkmoon's perk in the crucible. It's novel and amusing to one tap someone, but I get more mileage out of Soul Devourer. Truth be told, though, they're both fantastic, and it's going to come down to which one feels better to you. I've seen a lot of comments about how people struggle with Thorn's recoil pattern, which is not a problem I have, but I struggle with Ace of Spades sometimes and I know people love that gun. Again, to each their own. Between Thorn, Hawkmoon, Ace of Spades, and The Last Word, there's a great exotic hand cannon for everyone, so go with whatever works for you.

I honestly think Thorn is better due to how consistent it is with it's perk. Hawkmoon does have better stats, it does have random rolls (although most of them are complete trash), and has 1 tap'ing capabilities, however how often are you actually going to use that ability within the crucible? Thorn only requires a single kill for it's perk to be at a maximum, whereas hawkmoon needs roughly 2 kills worth of precision hits to make the perk worth your time.

Surplus is S-tier on Hawkmoon. The Stag is fine. It's better than titans running around with overshields.

For general play I prefer Thorn. In Trials tho, Hawkmoon is ridiculous.

imo hawkmoon is just hands down the better weapon if thorn ever gets a catty we can have the conversation again but hawkmoon just outclasses thorn in almost everything especially in competitive gamemodes you're absoluitely not gonna go pick up remnants on 90% of the trials maps

I am a Thorn main, I highly doubt that will ever change especially with Necrotic Grips being a thing & as I spend time on all 3 Guardians if something unbelievable (COUGH Eysluna COUGH COUGH!) was to be available? I would just test it out on my Hunter or Titan y'know? What's letting Thorn down & damn near every other former 150rpm HC for that matter, is Bungie literally just slowed the RPM & called it a day -______- Leaving weapons like Thorn with FAR less Range & pretty mediocre Stability. Bungie needs to look at a Patch even if it's just for the older Exotic Hand Cannons (as anything new won't have these issues obviously) it's only a handful, literally 2 or 3 if they only bother with the Exotics! My worry honestly is that whenever Thorn gets an Exotic Catalyst it'll be Range +20/30, Stability +20/30 & maybe 2x Remnants on a kill, there's definitely more that could be done with Thorn especially if it was updated to have similar Range & Stability to actual 140rpm Hand Cannons that saw no changes. I really hope Bungie do address this, atm as I'm using my Warlock with Necrotic Grips it's not too much of a handicap as when I do hop into the Crucible I can be a bit more aggressive (Ape haha) with Shotguns/Fusions & get a Melee clean up or use Thorn to pepper an opponent first kinda thing. One last thing... I don't see enough people talk about this & yeah it might be looked down on, cheesy, scummy, other stupid descriptions lol but it absolutely wins duels & matches!!! Thorn + Truthteller with Auto-Loading & Disruption Break!! Disruption Break + Mark of the Devourer? You're not getting away without Wormhusk, a Healing Rift or say one of the Middle Tree Dawnblade Healing Grenades.
