I mean. It IS an old instrument. And it sounds like an old instrument. Which is why so many people find it to be such an interesting instrument when they see it used in a modern setting. Have you ever just sat and listened to Hurdy Gurdy music for an hour or so though? It's a unique sound, but it's a unique sound that tends to start making everything have a similar sound to it if you listen for long enough, no matter how different the artist is trying to make each song. It's good in short bursts like this, but when it's the focus for too long, it starts to lose its charm for me. Probably why I -usually- prefer it as one of many instruments rather than as a near-solo act. All of that aside, check out Guilhem Desq if you haven't. His 'Visions' album is a great example of bringing the Hurdy Gurdy to the modern world. If you end up looking up songs on KZbin, fair warning that he has a few examples of songs he wrote/performed years before the album was made. I heavily recommend avoiding them and finding the studio versions instead. If it's posted prior to 2017, it's probably an old version.
