@@sarasweet3578 Paul's journey after the events of the first book are defined by his inability to accept the Golden Path's requirements; he's afraid of it, and ultimately runs away from it, leaving it's execution to his son Leto II. In case you weren't aware, the Golden Path is a course of action, seen through prescience, which ensures Mankind's survival through essentially the Ragnarok of the Dune universe. Thing is, Dune's story is one that teaches two lessons: never trust or follow charismatic leadership, and that all growth and advancement is built upon hardship and pain; as such, the Golden Path ensures survival only after millennia of suffering and oppression... something Paul wasn't psychologically capable of enduring.

When I first watched the film, the fight with Feyd was quite gut-wrenching. When Paul got stabbed and has his moment with Chani-it really seemed like he was silently communicating his goodbyes to her. She was terrified for him. Gurney, Jessica, and Stilgar’s looks of simultaneous confusion and devastation confirmed that no one else understood the depth of Paul’s plan. It seemed more like pure luck that he was able to come away with the victory. Rewatching the film, especially in light of the scene in this video specifically, you can see Paul’s complete and total control of the duel and conversations as a whole. His moment with Chani changes from, “Goodbye, my love,” to, “Now that I have everyone’s attention-watch this sh*t.” He saw it before it happened. LISAN AL GAIB. Incredible writing. Exceptional acting.

The way he painstakingly shifts his hand and brings it down, it gets me every time. It's like he's plotting his course through the future in real time; he sees the Emperor, and he knows he must face Fayd. And to do it, he must take an uncannily risky path, manifesting doubt in the hearts of all those he loves -- that is the narrow way through. Villeneuve's cut to the knife solidifies it. It points the way. An absolute masterpiece of a film. A divergence from Herbert's classic in so many ways, yet masterfully crafted nonetheless.

He sees more than Feyd. He sees ALL of the "other prospects" like himself and Feyd. He sees a future where multiple Kwisatz Haderachs wage prescient wars on each other, responding to things that haven't even happened, back and forth until all of humanity is tied up into a massive knot and strangles itself to death. A future where rebels like the Fremen can't even exist because the prescients see their every movement, thwart every attack, and invade their every hiding place. Humanity loses all ability to resist the brutal rule of tyrants once the tyrants gain prescience.

The thing with the Water of Life is that you can clearly see it changes both Jessica and Paul as people and their personalities. However, holding in account how with a person every experience they live it changes them in a way, having the collective consciousness and memories of everyone that ever lived and seeing all kind of probable futures is definitely the cause that both Jessica and Paul are so changed after drinking the Water. Paul at his young age has the knowledge and experience now of a person that lived for eons and that also has the ability to see through the future. That kind of power can be maddening

@@VeelouC yeah, to me I try to imagine this in the following way. She basically has the collective conciousness and memories of everyone who ever live + all possible futures and possibilities all in a clear way while she's IN THE WOMB. Imagine the amount of life experience and memories you have and how that changed you as a person and made you wiser, and how the older you get, more time passes and so comes with lots of experiences. However think of Paul's unborn sister not as a fetus in the womb, as she basically has the mind and experiences, memories of eons. Her life experience and memories is that of a person that lived for eons. And this comes with all the sufferring, pain and grief, all the traumatic experiences their ancestors have experienced, she has that all from the womb. If all these memories changed both Paul and Jessica so dramatically, and Paul is a teenager and Jessica a grown adult, imagine what that would do to a developing fetus 💀💀. This amount of power would change anyone to their core. Because experiences and memories literally change us.

I love how Paul's psychic presience is portrayed. He doesn’t just know what's going to happen, he doesn't just see the future. He's *living* it. The gestalt knowledge of all of his forebears brought forward and combined to experience all tomorrows to come. And a great many that might not come. It's a lot to take in. More than enough to change a man. Wizen him far beyond the years of even the Baron. Paul Atreides really did die when he drank that liquid. What sits before the camera now is him and everyone before him, all wearing his skin.

So…this is different than the books if he can see his duel with Feyd and how he stabs him in the chest in the end. In the books, his fight with Feyd is a blank spot in his prescient vision and he doesn’t know if he defeats him or not. This scene hints that Paul sees himself stabbing someone with a knife. He says all his visions are clear now, so, I don’t know if he can see how the ENTIRE fight plays out and knows he will win or if he only sees that little snippet and nothing else. Either way, it’s more than what he sees in the book.

And in the book it’s not a matter of him seeing possible futures after drinking the water of life, but that he can see the “now” with prescience. That’s how he can see the Great Houses in the space above Arrakis and figure out that he can cause the spice to self-destruct, which he used as the ultimate threat in the book. But in the movie he doesn’t really do that. But that’s fine Villeneuve just needed to condense things.
@CuttingEdges
@CuttingEdges 2 ай бұрын
Fascinating, it's been a while since I read the book, so I forgot about that. It makes sense, the prescient are hidden from the prescient, so Paul shouldn't see Feyd. However, this vision takes place right after a fatal blow to Feyd, so perhaps this is the moment when Paul's visions of killing Feyd become clear? He is unable to see the fight, hence the fight isn't one-sided to begin with. Surely if Paul could see the whole fight, in the movie canon, it would have resulted in a complete humiliating defeat of Feyd. All Paul knows is the moment right after the fight is won, but doesn't know exactly how to win. So in order to fulfill his "narrow way through" he must cross the invisible path, just as in the book as you stated.

I can see why Paul’s character inspired the character of the Emperor from Warhammer 40k. This is probably the closest we’ll get to seeing such a being; someone who’s essentially human, but who has lost his humanity in his great powers and gifts of foresight, who sees no other way forward than galactic genocide and conquest on an unimaginable scale. He sees all possible futures and knows this is the best, but that absolute certainty in his sight will cost him everything he holds dear. All that’s missing is a scene where he tells Chani: “The difference is, I *know* I am right.”

Something I realized about this scene is that it wasn't a time jump. Paul brought Jessica into his mind to talk privately with her even as people surrounded them.

It was a time jump, man. That would be cool, but Dune doesn't have psychic powers like that. Even the communication at the end between Jessica and Mohaim was either a conversation between their inner lives or reading their faces using their Bene Gesserit skills.

@@shehansoysa571 It seems to me a time-jump as well. Because, before that scene, there are many people in that room. Then we see Jessica alone with Paul. As for the much later scene, it can look like telepathy for people who haven't read novels but for us readers, it can well be interpreted as the special communication style between reverend mothers via internal awareness. Their mote-life sparks are speaking in the cosmic pool of other memories. In the book, this is described in WoL ceremony. It happens between Ramallo and Jessica. In the movie, DV used it between Mohiam and Jessica. But DV presented it in a simplest way because full description would have required more budget and time. And it would have distrupted the pacing of the scene. Funny, in the book, Frank Herbert is so insistent on that it is not telepathy. Yeah, old man, it is not like classic and stereotypic telepathy we all know, not X-men type telepathy. But, to be brutally honest, it has a few qualities of telepathy but in a way more esoteric, cosmic and mystic way. Not just brain power, but also soul power. Yeah, they do not read their thoughts, that is one of the reasons why it is not stereotypic telepathy. These Reverend Mothers just communicate with each other without opening their mouths and speaking aloud. Pretty cool stuff. This is hinted in the movie as well. However, it may not be enough for the audience.

Dune definitely has psychic powers. Paul is able to see the Great Houses and other ships above Arrakis in this version of the scene in the book, and Jessica sees all the past lives of the prior Reverend Mothers when she drank the water. Those things are so impossible they might as well be magic, even though Herbert brilliantly frames them as possible.

@@hypatia137 Yeah, I’ve read the book and I kinda just saw this as a creative liberty taken by Denis in the adaptation. The visual language of the scene really makes it feel like it’s happening in the moment as an internal discussion between Paul and Jessica, even if it isn’t exactly something that happens in the book. I mean, I certainly could be wrong, but my hunch is that Denis meant for it to be happening as a conversation they’re having using their newfound abilities

Paul is challenging the Great Houses and the entire Empire, with a legion of Fremen who have never engaged in galactic warfare and who are starting with whatever ships they can get their hands on at the end of Dune - ALL WHILST trying to avoid a total invasion of Arrakis and the death of his friends and Chani. So yes, it's a lot more complicated than you're making it out to be. Pauls action have rippling consequences. He will also be going up against the Guild Navigators and Bene Gesserit (who have lost control of their Kwisatz Haderach), who will no doubt use their prescience abilities to aid the fight against Paul - and in case you haven't read Dune: Messiah, without spoiling anything, prescient individuals interacting with other prescient individuals is not a simple task.

This is what I don't get either. If it were a "narrow way through" with all the other paths leading to their destruction, we should have seen the Sardaukar and Harkonnen actually putting up a decent fight. We didn't see even one Fremen die in the final battle. And where were those bug like ships that bombed Sietch Tabr in the final battle? Those things alone should have killed 1000's of Fremen? And how exactly would the Fremen fight against those things? Kind of ridiculous. I'm pretty sure Paul and the Fremen could have just walked up to the emperor and Sardaukar and won. There didn't seem to be any threat to them at all in this movie.

Paul has to do several things he wouldn't naturally do in this narrow path, if not for his prescience telling him he has no choice. He has to marry Irulan, a terrible insult to Chani. He has to spare Shaddam's life. He has to agree to a kanly duel with Feyd-Rautha, which in the novel is a blind spot in his prescience so he can't foresee what Feyd will do in it. He has to let his Fremen go on a galactic rampage to subjugate the rest of the Landsraad. He has to deny resisting Houses any spice for interstellar travel, which leads to famine on numerous planets and kills billions of innocents. He has to become a true tyrant. And still later, there's stuff with supernatural genetic engineers, face-changing assassins, scheming Bene Gesserit, and the clone of a dearly departed friend. Pitfalls, everywhere.
