If you could talk about those diatonic parallelisms he does, it's important because how can you go chromatic on improvising if you can't do diatonically, that is actually where I am in my practice, trying to know these movements really well

Paul Desmond's command of strong melodic lines within his improvisations always impressed me far more than other jazz artists which often leave me wondering how much wandering the ear can accept without the feeling they lost many listeners. Not so with Paul. His craftsmanship shines brilliantly.

He’s an amazing saxophone player, I could say just about the same to Gerry Mulligan… amazing baritone saxophone player, really simple, and melodic improvisations

Paul Desmond has a particular sound. It's the perfect middle between classical sax and jazz sax.

I've never looked much into Desmond's playing, but wow, this is just...amazing. And again, props for being able to transcribe this!

I think the fact that Paul Desmond is by the general (and jazz) public associated with Take Five is kind of a curse, because lot's of jazzmusicians view that as who Paul Desmond is, some smooth player who managed to get a jazz hit, no too complicated solo's and easy listening. But if you dig deeper, and certainly watch the complete 50's, he is really one of a kind with astonishing abilities and unlike anybody else at that point. Spread the Paul Desmond word, because he is so much more than only Take Five :)

I always thought the Brubeck quartet was one of the best sounding quartets ever, jazz or otherwise. They just all seemed to intuitively understand each other, and in my opinion their mesh of classical and jazz is the height of musicality. Not to mention they were all class acts

I used to believe that Desmond's sound is the feature that makes him unique. I was thinking "he does not play that fast, so he's just depending on this sound". However, it's not just that when you hear him play. Much later, after I detached him from the "take five" myth, I realized that apart from the sound (which is awesome)any bar of his improvisations could be an idea for another improvisation, like a song's main tune. Also, his lines sound good even if I play them (OK, not so good, but still...)

Absolutely John! I think Take Five might have been a blessing (financially) and a curse for his recognition as a strong unique voice on the alto. Just check his work in most notably in the 50's, he had amazing technique and even fast idea's, while still with the Desmond sound and beautiful sequences. Jazz at Oberlin is an album that is just insane, in my view. What a combination of tecnique, sound, phrasing and timing, and foremost, super melodic ideas All combined :) . I know, I sound like a Desmond preacher

Still the most beautiful tone I know and that I try to achieve on my soprano, it's been quite a time and I still have a difficulty because I found that harder reed is better for this, I use a 3.5, but I always have to play for at least 40min. for the reed to get really good, does anybody knows if is that's right?
@jakemf15 жыл бұрын
Ronaldo Araújo Getz and pepper are right there also
@SharpElevenMusic5 жыл бұрын
That's really normal with that kind of strenght of reeds Ronaldo. It would take me even longer probably to get a 3,5 playing comfortably :p (but it a lso depends on the opening of the mouthpiece of course)
@SharpElevenMusic5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Getd definitely, Art Pepper I would say less so imho. Pepper has also quite some projection in his sound, I would replace Pepper with Lee Konitz, he is soundwise and melodicaly more similar to Desmond
