I'm a 75-year-old alto player and went to sleep last night with my phone on my chest playing a Desmond album. To me, he'll always be The Man....

Always loved Desmond’s playing but my favourite alto player of all time was Jimmy Dorsey. I’m in my late 70s and back in the 60s I played both alto and tenor in a stage band. (Still have my Selmer *80 alto mouthpiece) Being from Toronto and having seen Bickert live I was amazed at his casual gum chewing effortless style.

This is such a perfect performance of this lovely tune. Bickert and Desmond were born to play together. And Don Thompson is a wonderful bassist.

Back in the 70s a high school buddy of mine was an aspiring jazz pianist ( later signed by A&M ) who joined the musician’s union as soon as he could. Ed Bickert’s number was in the union directory, so he called him up to ask him if he’d accompany him on a gig for $50. Ed said sure. True story.

The Desmond's effortless way to play his alto was absolutely stunning and still remains today a kind of miracle. This November 25th, his birthday centennial deserves to be highly celebrated.

I went to see him at George's in Toronto, and he didn't appear as he had to cut his tour short for health reasons. It wasn't long after that he died. I have many albums with Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck plus others, and had really wanted to see him live, but alas..... One of the most musical players, regardless of instrument.

Stunning work from a man who left us too soon. His ability to create beauty, even in the first eight or nine notes of this piece, is astonishing. By the way, I am editing this about a week after my initial comment. I am just sitting here trying to do this on my clarinet and realize that thank God someone had the insight to record this.

It is both incomprehensible and sad that this momentary piece of magic does not have 100 million views. Ty. Incredible. The date can be fairly accurately approximated by when seeing when Ed switched the stock telecaster neck pickup to his later used humbucker in the neck.

Thank you for uploading this. I believe it was recorded in '76. What a shame that Desmond passed only a year later. This is probably one of my favourite configurations of his quartet. Bickert came highly recommended by Jim Hall, and justifiably so. Great tune too! :)

Ed Bickert had put a Gibson PAF humbucker at neck position of his unique and only, legendary '65 Telecaster. It happened in 1967 at The Twelfth Fret shop in Toronto. So this take, showing the previous single coil neck pickup, must be before 1967.
