It is a tribute to his skill as an artist that Paul solos for over fives minutes and rarely repeats the same musical phrase/idea...unless of course he is playing the melody. His mastery of the instrument is simply stunning. His improvisational flow is crazy good. He's been a special talent since his metal days in Racer X. He's only improved with age.

He has said that blues has helped his ear, intervals, and whatnot. He has gotten sick of metal because a lot of players just sweep. Not saying he doesn't play metal, but they don't do anything unique or different.
@sideparting68455 жыл бұрын
@@TheMrCC21 Thanks, this is very interesting. I did not know this. I got into PG because of his articulate shredding and don't find his blues playing or tone so captivating (although it's great!). Bizarrely Satriani has always been rooted in the blues and it was his melodic hummable phrasing that I find easier to listen to; perhaps it is the repetitive nature of his melodies (eg some form of "chorus" in a song) instead of the "let's go on a journey for a song" form that PG is taking here. Anyway very enjoyable, although heading into a middley nasally tone these days.
@Melodeath005 жыл бұрын
No disrespect to PG, he's an eternal master and will always be one of the greats, but that's a very stupid statement. The last decade has been a golden age for Metal as far as innovation and experimentation is concerned. And yes, please name one good Metal player that just sweeps.

Saw Paul a few months ago live - even greater than I thought he would be. Don't want to be a downer, but there is some cause for concern for guitar music. Here you had arguably the greatest electric guitarist in the world, maybe ever, and the smallish club was barely full. Listen to the stuff young people listen to now - there is no guitar in it. Sure there is still guitar in country, but pop and dance, always the mainstay of sales, have none. Guitar unit sales continue to fall, from over 2 million five years ago to under a million now. Guitar Center is close to bankruptcy and thinking about changing it's name. Maybe some young guitar bands will come along and change things, but guitar will soon be finished as the dominant instrument in music, a title it has had since the late 50s. Before that, it was accordion, believe it or not.
