Paul Gilbert continues to be a great guitar ambassador. always giving back to the community. from his earliest videos, he incorporates humor and fun . while some guitarists are reluctant to share tips "tricks" short us or discoveries and realizations, Paul has always given back, empowering generation of guitarists. this guy truly inspires. always been and always will be a fan of his.

I met Paul 34 years ago at a guitar clinic. He was the nicest guy. They had a raffle, and I won a pleather Ibanez jacket. I wore that thing until it literally fell apart. I removed the Ibanez patch and have it to this day...💚🎸

Simply AMAZING! How a modest guitar player can explain difficult or rough complex music in a way that I, a Venezuelan, a Latin-american, can understand so easy. It inspires me to grab my guitar and play for a long while and keep other responsibilities away. God bless to this guy and his wisdom. Thank you Paul.

One of the most unique music videos I’ve ever seen, and I’ve watched so many. Paul is humble, hysterical, and hugely talented, passionate about his craft. I’m stunned by his enthusiasm, wit, intelligence, musicality, he’s turned out to be so much more than just some shredder guy. I’m just truly impressed, amazed,appreciative. My humble thanks Mr Gilbert

Paul, just so you know friend, this is the DULLEST, most introverted crowd of (I'm assuming) new up and coming guitar players that ever simply did NOT have a clue as to who they were seeing, understand or 'get' humor (yeah, takes a BIG IQ to get good comedy, hah!) I've ever had the embarrassment to see!!! My friend, you were KILLING me with too many jokes and innuendo throughout this video to count!! And barely a titter from these zombies at best. Clueless and spoiled and small minded. You aren't loosing your ability to entertain, expand minds, be uproariously funny, inspire people to improve their selves and their playing. Simply put Paul, you ROCK amigo!! Thank you for all you continue to give, and thank you MIT for being nice and generous enough to share this w/o $$$, that is a extremely rarer and rarer kindness of late . . . .

👏👏. I was somewhat natural in my teens, Nirvana got me started, then the Beatles, Zep, etc. I took lessons, could read music well. Started getting more into it it more. Got fast. Electric, but then mostly acoustic. Learned the hard way pushing myself on acoustic. I was always the best amongst my group of friends, besides one guy I knew who made me say Wow. He's still the best over ever heard as far as a PURE natural. He was doing stuff at 15 that was insane. We had some small bands here and there. The older crowed had some amazing ones. Man the 90s were such a time for bands Then had some side tracks in life. To say the least. And nothing mattered. No interests. Things happen unfortunately. And I got off course. I'm lucky I'm here and happy about it obviously. But if I put that wasted time into being a player, who knows. I have regrets. I'm like that. Funny I remember me and my father who I just lost to Covid this year, buying an selling guitars before the internet was huge and everyone knew everything. Back then you could find a treasure in a old lady's attic. We bought and sold alot of stuff. Was so fun. Tried getting back into it in my 30s. Remembered some simple songs. Can't read music anymore which is crazy, but hey we have tabs. And it didn't stick again. Now I'm going for it again. I always have owned a guitar, but didn't dedicate late as I said. . Well I just sold everything, and put all the money towards getting a custom Martin sinker mahogany B&S, Addy top, hide glue, d18 made. Cost wise, yeah maybe I don't deserve it as a player, but I still have that ear for music and I'm gonna go hard this time. I'm now 40. And I'm looking forward to this custom more than anything and refuse to waste it. I can still play and pick up things by hearing them somewhat, but it's sort of a start over to get back to my roots and use tbe talent I know I have. I never got there. I will. So I guess my story is I wish I always had practiced. I did when I was young. I was obsessed. And then didn't. Never too late to push yourself I guess.

I like how he points out shuffles as a rhythmic place in musical time, abstract as they are in theory they play in an area worth being conscious of, lots of options appear when you create a shufle, instead of unkowingly syncopating without noticing what's causing the count to blend in several directions, actually fascinating stuff to have on lock mentally

I've always wondered if Paul's misstep of initially playing only upstrokes is the key to his amazing virtuosity. Al Di Meola recommends something a bit similar in his picking book. He says to practice each line with only downstrokes, then only upstrokes, then alternate. Al also started as a percussionist. So, maybe there is something to the theory of having equal strength in both upstroke and down strokes to achieve great virtuosity. Anyone care to share their thoughts on this?

The key is x note per string patterns and pickslanting. This is what enables virtuosity
@lambdaman3228
@lambdaman3228 4 жыл бұрын
If what's holding back your virtuosity is that you're too slow of a picker, then this would surely help. It seems to me that note choice, chord tones, etc are far more important for the average player. But for true virtuosi, *_*everything*_* is important.

If anyone is doubtful I’m here to say, I used the prince of tone as my main overdrive in a working band for years so I know it inside and out. As an owner of the duke of tone I can now say this is basically identical in tone and function. It is so close in fact that the one minor thing I disliked( the bright tone control) is the same! I have it set almost off just as I did with the prince…that said I Love this pedal and MXR and AM did a fantastic job I’m blown away..

I love Paul Gilbert. "Ballad of the Last Lions" is my personal theme song of hope and of positive thinking!! I just wanted to share a little something - on the subject of light strings, I have normal sized hands, but with shorter/smaller fingers than average. Reverend Willy's .007 gauge strings - along with shorter-scale and/or skinny neck guitars, have made all the difference in whether or not I was going to give up playing. If it helps just one person like myself, try those options before depriving yourself of the incredible joy of playing guitar!! For years, I tried to make my hands conform to the bigger guitars, feeling that I was inadequate somehow. But lighter strings and a black beauty of a Jackson Dinky Minion changed all that!! Even my beloved skinny-neck Fender MIJ Strat left me limited in the first five positions (within reason - I just couldn't do some of the really cool stuff). But that Jackson saved my sanity. There are also some vintage Gibson, Fender, and other brands you can find that are short scale and of high quality. 7's and smaller guitars ROCK!! Someday, I'll put some killer DiMarzio's in that Minion - but for now, all that matters is that I don't feel so limited as a small-handed player.

I'm right there with ya... I lost the use of my left middle finger (fretting hand) and when I was learning clean Country lead and chicken pickin, with all those whole step + bends, I switched to .07s, and ESPECIALLY on my Bullet Mustang (short scale), it did make a HUGE difference... Unfortunately, without an EXTREMELY light touch, everything (including CHORDS) fretted goes SHARP, lol... so, I moved UP to 8.5s, and they work great for me... I call 'em "Almost 9s", lol... ALMOST as easy to bend, and they STAY in tune, lol...

Paul is just great he seems like a personable chap, and always has really cool (and funny) stories to share. I'm trying to work up the nerve to sign up for his online lessons (keep trying to tell myself "It's OK you can make mistakes" and then another ,evil, voice says "but You'll embarrass yourself,,," typical guitar player "disease" I guess). I'd love to take a 1on 1 in person lessons or hell even a group lessons would work too. Anyone wanna start a crowd fund for that ?? Seriously !! The group lessons I mean, though I'd take contributions .... : )

19:06 "the music that I grew up with and really love is not at all what I'm known for" -- I've been thinking recently about how the music that MY guitar heroes grew up listening to is not at all what their music sounds like NOR is it what I enjoy listening to. And even in myself, the music that I create often doesn't sound like my biggest musical influences. It's weird how inspiration and musical expression work like that.
