Very true. I use to play a lot of P.O.D, Limp Bizkit, System of A Down, Slipnknot, some Metallica, Nirvana. I thought I was king shit (in my room). Then I saw a Paul Gilbert live concert video.........(BOOOOM) my mind was blown up. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, he was beyond anything I've ever seen (as a kid so I was limited). Ever since I've been trying to play like Paul (and failing miserably) but on the good side, my skills have increased 100 fold, now Metallica solos are a Segway scooter ride in the park, I stopped playing all my old songs because they were just too easy. Now I'm playing songs "Scarified", Extreme "Play With Me", and other bands like Megadeth, Steve Vai, Jason Becker, EVH, SRV, some classical and now I'm gonna go for Ygnwie Malmsteen songs. I wouldn't be pushing myself to play better if not for Paul Gilbert. He's the man!

@@smokedonnie - Alan Holdsworth is an anomaly and his music challenges the skills of even those who are world class virtuoso, he must be an alien or from another dimension. He's one of Steve Vai's favorite and would put him at the top of his list.. Here's a quote from Vai himself.. "His thought process was phenomenal. I can hear any guitar player and I know what they’re doing - I might not be able to play it - but I can see it in my mind’s eye. But I do not know what the fuck Holdsworth was doing at all…” I'll give it shot eventually and hope for the best, thanks!

I still could not believe how very clean every single note when Paul Gilbert played very fast.

The amazing thing is that Paul is not playing at super high tempo like 250bpm or 300bpm. it's his "cleanliness' from his picking that creates the perception of fast, especially when he plays those 16th note triplet runs. Like Scarified and Technical Difficulties are not even 150 bpm.

Paul Gilbert did a series in Total Guitar, those lessons taught me so much about the guitar, I will be forever grateful. I have seen him live on many occasions and when he played JB's in Dudlee he did an informal meet and greet..... I panicked (as I was not worthy) and left before he came out of his dressing room. Biggets mistake ever, thank you Paul, you're a proper gentleman.

I always thought it'd be great if Paul Gilbert had his own Late Night TV show like Letterman. Of course focused on musical guests, music education etc. He's super down to earth, smart, hilarious, has that public speaking voice, and I would definitely subscribe to whatever new channel had him on. Thanks so much, one of the Shred Collabs i wished to see one day...and it happened. I'm really grateful for all the very very cool Shred Collab you do Mr. Li, simply love them. Personally still funny for me, as an autodidact starting back in the days just playing upstrokes until that went really fast for upstroke playing only. Then a friend said, hey did you ever heard about alternate picking and i said, no. From that time on i knewed what all the fast guys did and do but still, when just letting it go most 3 Note per String runs automatically start with an upstroke. No matter what i do, there will always be some 'leftover' in the playing formed by the early upstroke days. And i always have the feeling that Paul Gilbert also still faces this situation which makes me smile since he could make an advantage out of it. 😀

I don’t even play guitar and I enjoyed this immensely. Paul seems like such a genuinely nice guy and an amazing talent. I stumbled across this video in a search and watched it start to finish like a kid watching his favorite cartoon. What struck me is how humble you two are about your ability. I think we see you play or hear your music and think “man they can do everything” but you weren’t afraid to show that certain things are difficult even for seasoned players that we look at as more or less guitar gods lol.
