Hey kids! Its a brand new installment of Weekend Wankshop with your good buddy, Uncle Ben Eller!
Ever wondered how Paul Gilbert plays so clean and fast?! The secret is, its not ALWAYS his alternate picking powers you're hearing... its his brilliant combination of lightning fast picking combined with strategically-placed legato for a shred bonanza!! And you're about to learn exactly how he does it!
This lick uses his signature trick combined with the A minor scale; it starts off across the bottom two strings (ala Technical Difficulties by Racer X), then ascends up a big 3 note per string scale pattern. Its surprisingly easy and sounds SICK!
In this lesson, you're gonna learn the secret sequence he uses a lot, a super cool lick to help you practice it, plus all the Troy Grady/Cracking the Code downward and upward pick slanting benefits you're gonna practice as you learn it, plus a bunch of other tips and tricks to help you shred HARD today!
Playing my Suhr Modern Satin into the Fractal Axe FX III. Lovely rig.
Thanks for watching! Who else has shred secrets you wanna know about next? Let me know in the comments!

I took three private lessons from Paul before he was famous. Early 1980's Emulating him too much might cause unnecessary anxiety. His pinky is about as long as my index finger. He also seems to have alien biomechanics allowing his fingers to just move beyond the speed of light with perfect accuracy. Watching him play up close feels like entering an alternate reality.

U dont need big hands at all. Hes not ever stretch in 99 percent of what he does.. guitars are built for normal people.. if big hands mattered at all u could simply play a smaller guitar.. slit of people think long fingers are a necessity.. nobodys doing alot of crazy reaching.

His show got cancelled, but his crew contacted all the VIP folks and they met us at his hotel suite for a 2 hour storytelling/playing show. Just a super swell cat that loves to tell stories, chat and play.

Uncle Ben. Thank you... I applied your economy picking exercise to a major scale pattern I have been teaching my oldest son, and I found I do some upslant picking. Turned this into that sweet 4 note ascending scale pattern we all love but I could never do it before at metal speed. It’s been 22 years since I started playing. Awesome. 👏

Hey Ben , I have been watching many of your videos and I have to say they are some of the best , the content is unique and many things I never thought of , or at least I never looked at from your point of view , special thanks for the frank Zappa video you did , also shows your diversity , I played for 30 years and unfortunately had to give it up due to illness , but I still look at videos for information , that may sound strange given my circumstances , but I guess the reason is because I do miss playing , anyway , thank you and keep on with your quality videos !

This a phenominal speed tip! I had already experimented with 3 note per speed licks by alternate picking once or twice on a string then legato to repeat giving the picking hand time to move up or down to the next string, especially if you are skipping a string. It's easier to alternate pick up a scale than down and adding legato really helps!

I took some lessons from Paul Gilbert when I was a kid. Street Lethal was out but that was all. He mostly did alternate picking and swept the arpeggios. He was actually faster back then. He started to incorporate the hammer on picking combo later on. He also changed the way he holds his pick. He doesn't focus so much on shredding these days but still can as we all know.

He's the best at explaining things. As an example, have you seen his video on pinched harmonics? He puts a texta mark on his thumb to show people exactly what he is doing. I thought it was brilliant. Even though it's not something I needed, I stole the idea when teaching a friend. If his videos were in a slightly better order of progression, he'd be the best teacher on KZbin. I'm already happy with my playing, but when I remember to come to this channel, I see there is so much more I could learn.
