This is my 13th video following my learning experience with the Paul Howard Fluting/Router jig. William Hunt Woodturner. A more complex project with 60 flutes at 5mm thick, to complement to 5mm annular grooves on the reverse. Initially I finished the bowl in melamine lacquer, but stripped it off in favour of Hampshire Sheen microcrystaline wax as the lacquer looked too bright and artificial.
Ive never turned Iroko before but I was pleased how it cut and finished, but there was a tendency to splinter a little under the router, or it may have been bad handling on my part.
I used a 5mm straight, twin flute router cutter which worked well for this project giving an almost equal spacing for the fluting and web in between.
Not a perfect piece, but good enough to pass muster.
Paul Howard’s Fluting Jig is an amazing addition to the woodturners tool kit and opens up all kinds of new turning opportunities.
