It’s a rare and beautiful thing when a person, no less a man and one with a public reputation for other things, shares a deep part of his soul and speaks from his heart of his quest and unfolding discovery of the living God. Thank you, Mr Kingsnorth. Thank you, Dr. Middleton for shining Light in the dark.

This all resonates with my experience of becoming Orthodox. I thought I could read my way into the Church. It certainly helped get me through the door, but then I discovered another organ of learning was required - the heart. Not in the sentimental poetic sense of feelings/emotion, but as the East understands it - the organ of spiritual perception. The difficulty is that, at least for me, the heart was cocooned under layers and layers of sin, ego and darkness. Great patience is needed, there is no microwave version of Orthodoxy. It's a slow cooker, bit by bit burning away the impurities and dross. 11 years in the Church now and I feel like I've barely begun.

Christianity is strong in the West, just not among affluent Caucasians. Look at immigrant communities and many parts of Latin America.
