There's something clever tragic ironic and beautiful about the line "you'd probably laugh and say that we were worlds apart" because he knew John well enough to know that his pride would have led him to saying Paul DOESN'T know him well.

@@ellynmacgregor8210 How Do You Sleep was in turn a response to Paul´s attack in "Too many people", which in turn probably was in reponse to something else, which was in response to something else! The bottom line is when the Beatles broke up, there were tensions between all of them. John and Paul made up in 1972, and although their relationship obviously wasn´t 100% healed, they made efforts over the years to keep in touch and hang out. The fact that they could forgive each other tells me they really loved each other, because we only forgive the people we love after really nasty arguments. I think it´s sad that we fans still talk about their relatively short fight after Beatles, when in fact they moved on from it, maybe we should too.

In his tribute song to John, 'Here Today' Paul says, "What about the time we met, well I suppose that you could say that we were playing hard to get" This refers to the fact John didn't ask Paul to join the group right away. He was a bit intimidated by how good Paul was. And after all, John was the leader and the star and singer up to that point. So he waited a while and told his friend Pete Shotten and Ivan Vaughn to ask Paul to join. This was typical John. This way HE didn't have to do it face to face to avoid embarrassment if Paul said no. Paul played hard to get because when asked by Pete to join he told him he'd like to think on it for a bit. Both were playing hard to get even though Paul really wanted to join right away and John really wanted him right away, they both made each other wait. Another line in Paul's tribute song 'Here Today" to John, was "Remember the night we cried because there wasn't any reason left to keep it all inside". This was when they were both in a hotel room in a rain storm and got drunk and started telling each other how much they love each other. This never happened before. John got very drunk and started crying and so did Paul. It was the fact John and Paul were thinking about their mother's that had died very young in their lives. That was the bond between them. And that night they both let the pain out in tears. Very very unlike John and Paul to show that much emotion.

I don't think so. John would have softened and opened up more as he got older, as he was the sort of person invested in evolving as a person. I think also it's not much like the sappy songs John ragged on him for. The sappy songs were usually vague platitudes about a made up person, very fairytale. This is not sappy. It's actually much more akin to John's solo work like "God" or "Jealous Guy", in that Paul is being sincere and vulnerable. It's actually nothing like any Paul song from the Beatles days at all, again much more like John's solo work. John would have liked it a great deal.

When this song came out on Tug of War, critics and fans were divided about it’s worth. Even I had ambivalence towards it. Having seen McCartney perform it on a couple of occasions and grown older and more in tune with my own mortality, losing friendships and loved ones along the way, I now feel it is the most profound song written about John Lennon. Fittingly, it was written by the man who will forever be linked with him musically. All the greats of Lennon’s generation: Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and his other band mate, George Harrison, have paid tribute to John. None of them have evoked the intimacy that Paul does with this song. It’s not a masterpiece, it’s not timeless, it likely will not be remembered by future generations. What it is, is an honest expression of one man’s love and admiration for another man. In Pace Requiescat John Lennon.
