I remember the day this song came out. When the Beatles released songs it was not like other bands.he radio stations would play the songs all day. When Abbey road was released it went to number one at the instant stores opened. The only people who got copies had pre-ordered weeks before. When the Hey Jude single came out it was the same. It sold 8 million copies. I came home from school that day, I had a quick afternoon tea, then listened to the song on my transistor radio while walking over to the dairy for milking the cows. Because it was such a long song I got in trouble for walking slow and being late for milking. We always had a radio on during milking, so I got to hear it several more times, but I have never forgotten the experience of that song as I was walking to the milking shed. It is burned in my memory, the damp red soil, the emerald green of the grass with waterdrops, the misty rain clouds slowly lifting, the smells, and the sounds of cows and dogs, and the motors of the milking machines warming up, and the song on that tinny little transistor in the air, and Paul McCartney’s message to John Lennon’s son.

The Beatles started it AND they finished it! No other band has been as great as they are! As Paul said, they expected this thing to last about 10 years... but just keeps going and going! No other band has ever been as successful reaching so many different generations. I would actually say that if this planet lived for eternity, every generation (from their beginning onwards) would know and love their songs forever!

My then 7 year old son and I saw him in 2017. It cemented him as a 4th gen fan in my family. I was a little skeptical due to the price but it was worth every penny. Paul could sit home and count his money or half ass it through concerts but he didn’t. He played like it was he still had something to prove. Amazing and if you haven’t seen him, I’d highly highly recommend it once things open back up. His audience is of every age, color , religion etc.

I have worked a number of Paul McCartney shows over the years, mostly Steel Crew and as a Production Climber. You will be pleased to know that Sir Paul's Road Crew loved working for him. Anything they needed to make the tour work better, they could ask Paul directly and he would take care of it. Unheard of in Rock and Roll tours, Paul gave his crews 2 raises on at least one of his World Tours. To stand on stage with Paul, waiting to start the Production Load Out was one of the high points of my career, having listened to the Beatles since the 1964 Ed Sullivan show.

One reason this is one of the greatest of Beatles songs - it was written for Julian, AND it was written for John. “You were made to go out and get her” and “you’re waiting for someone to perform with” and the beautiful sentiment: ‘Don’t carry the world upon your shoulder’ In one of the last interviews, John claimed as much, saying something like ‘that’s the angel in him blessing me and saying ‘go’ but the devil side didn’t want me to go’

I do think that Paul was more of a father back then to Julian than John was but at the end of the day, Julian lost both of them when his dad left. Paul stopped comforting him after a while and John just didn’t see him as often as Julian would have liked. Julian said in an interview that it’s always awkward whenever he and Paul are in the same room together and it’s probably because other than John, Paul was the dad, but he “left” as well.

Love, love, love this song. I can’t believe he’s playing on an upright! There is an iconic video of them performing on an Ed Sullivan type show where Paul is at a noticeably banged up upright surrounded by the band & audience members. I wonder if he wanted to recreate that. The studio version is outstanding as well.
